WHATEVER HAPPENED TO.......?

Fri Apr 22, 2011 10:03 am

All of the team who beat QPR in the League One Play Off Final? If you ever wondered answers are below:

Neil Alexander - After a 6 year stay with us, where he made 213 appearances, Alexander left on a free transfer in 2007 to join Ipswich. He soon swiftly joined Glasgow Rangers where he has been their reserve keeper since 2008. He has also made 3 appearances for Scotland.

Rhys Weston - A decent defender at League One level who was clearly out of his depth in the Championship. Since leaving us on a free in 2006 he has enjoyed mixed success at the likes of Norwegian club, Viking F.K,as well as at Port Vale and Walsall. He is currently playing for Dundee United and won the last of his 7 Wales caps in 2006.

Spencer Prior - The man ate sheeps balls when he signed in 2001 left us in 2004 when he joined Southend United. In 2008 he went to play for Newcastle Jets in Australia before retiring in 2009. Unbelievably, he is now a football analyst for the Fox channel in Australia.

Danny Gabbidon - One of the best signings from the Sam era Gabbs left the club in 2005 when he joined West Ham United. Whilst he initially excelled, his time with the Hammers has been plagued by injury and as such he has only made 90 appearances for them in a 6 year period compared to 190 appearances in a five year spell as a Bluebird.

Chris Barker- Since the 2003 play off final Barker enjoyed loan spells with both Stoke and Colchester before joining QPR on a free transfer in 2007. After a one year spell with the hoops Barker then signed for Plymouth before signing for Southend last summer.

Willie Boland - After a 7 year spell, and 209 appearances, Boland signed for Hartlepool United in 2006 where he suffered from a knee injury which eventually led to his retirement. Boland was persuaded to come out of retirement in 2010 by irish League side Limerick and he has now recently signed for Guisborough F.C.

Graham Kavanagh- After becoming our first £1 million player in 2001 Kav soon became a key figure in the middle of our midfield and proceeded to score 15 league goals in his first season. Forced to leave the club due to financial difficulties Kav signed for Wigan and helped them gain promotion to the Premier League. Following his time with Wigan he then signed for Sunderland and enjoyed a spell on loan at Sheffield Wednesday before signing for Carlisle United, where he is now a player coach.

Gareth Whalley - Whalley's time at Cardiff came to a premature end due to a row over a £50,000 bonus payment if he were to make a certain number of appearances. He subsequently signed for Wigan, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League before then moving to Swindon Town, and then Altrincham, before retiring in 2007.

Andy Legg - Tragically the 2003 Play Off Final was to be this City favourite's last ever appearance in a City shirt. He subsequently joined Peterborough, where he combined coaching duties alongside playing. Having retired from the professional game in 2006 Legg briefly turned out for Maesteg and Newport County before becoming player-manager of Llanelli in 2007.

Robert Earnshaw - One of our most popular players Earnie was sold to Premier League West Bromwich Albion in 2004 for £3m. In his first season in the Premier League Earnie scored a highly creditable 14 goals, including a hat-trick against Charlton Athletic. He was sold to Norwich in 2006 and his goalscoring form (29 goals in 45 games) saw him then join Derby County in 2007. Earnie's time at Derby was unsuccessful and he swiftly moved to Nottingham Forest, where he has played since 2008, scoring 34 goals in 95 games.

Peter Thorne - Sam broke the club transfer record to buy Thorne in 2001 when he signed him for £1.7m from Stoke. Despite being susceptible to injuries Thorne and Earnie struck up a great striking partnership, which saw them share 52 goals between them in our promotion winning season. He continued this form into the Championship but injuries eventually led to the club releasing him in 2005. A disastrous two year period at Norwich followed before he enjoyed success at Bradford City, scoring 31 goals in 77 games. Thorne eventually retired in 2010.

Martyn Margetson - Martyn was our reserve goalkeeper between 2002 - 2007 and made 35 appearances in this spell. A very accomplished keeper Martyn was asked to stay on as our goalkeeping coach, a position he still holds.

Leo Fortune West - Leo became a cult hero at Cardiff due to his ungainly, awkward style that still produced results, most memorably when he scored a hat -trick on the final day of the season to earn promotion from League Two. Since leaving Cardiff in 2003 Leo has become a true footballing journeyman playing for Doncaster, Rushden, Cambridge, York, Alfreton Town, North Ferriby United, Goole and now turns out for Armthorpe Welfare.

Mark Bonner - A loyal servant who made 143 appearances in a six year spell as a Bluebird before joining Oldham in 2004 where he ended his career in 2006.

Jason Bowen - A frustrating player who one minute looked out of this world and the next out of his depth. Having left the club in 2004 he surprisingly signed for non league Newport County despite recieving offers from a host of league clubs. In 149 appearances for the Exiles he scored 48 goals before joining up with his pal, Andy Legg, at Llanelli in 2008.

Gary Croft - A decent full back who made 80 appearances for us before signing for Grimbsy Town in 2005. In 2007 he signed for Lincoln City, where he played for one season before announcing his retirement. Amazingly he now works as an estate agent in Grimsby!

Andy Campbell- Looked set to go down as one of our biggest ever mistakes in the transfer market following his huge £1m signing from Middlesbrough. Thankfully Campbell finally justified the faith in him by scoring a superb lob in the 2003 play off final but that was to prove to be the last highlight for him at the club. Despite having played in the Premier League Campbell's career has dropped off the radar since leaving us in 2006, having scored just 6 League goals in 68 games. He has since turned out for Doncaster, Oxford, Dunfermline, Halifax, Farsley Celtic, Bradford Park Avenue and Whitby Town.

Lennie Lawrence - An astute manager at League One level was soon out of his depth in the Championship. A well liked man Lennie's time at the club came to an end in 2005. Cardiff was his last position in management as he then proceeded to become Director of Football at Bristol Rovers, and then Hereford, before becoming Assistant Manager at Crystal Palace this season.

Interesting that.

Remember we played in a shitty hockey stadium which was MK`s ground at the time,
In the rain in an orange away kit.
And Gary Croft scored from about 40 yrds.

My fave has to be Kav though out of all that list

I liked Kav & Peter Thorne, Leo was like "the beast" aswell, but for me , Earnie was the "jewel". Remember him as a kid, wearing Brazil & Holland tops up Caerphilly, & buying Lynx deodrant in Superdrug, Caerphilly after training.

I said that he LOOKED like he was going to be one of our biggest ever mistakes before scoring THAT goal! Despite the fact he didn't do much other than that his £1m fee was justified just because his goal took us up and I love him for it!

My sincere apology I quickly read through your posting most interested in seeing what the lesser names are doing these days.

Weston is at Dundee, not Dundee United.

Big difference of around 250 yards

I actually done a delivery to Aberdeen before and on the way back I popped into Dundee to actually see both grounds. Is fantastic to see them that near to each other however two clubs in Hungray are actually closer as they are directly across the road to one another.

Drop by next time you're in Aberdeen!

Which clubs in Hungary? Didn't know about that one!

I recall going to watch Clydebank at Dundee around 20 years ago and back then the Premier Reserve League up here played on Saturday's as well. United's reserves were at home to Celtic as we got humped by Dundee accross the road and it kicked off between Dundee & Celtic fans. Was a weird situation!
