Cardiff boy Bellamy in line to replace Jones in player-manager role

Craig Bellamy is a leading contender to replace Dave Jones, who was sacked as Cardiff boss after the club's play-off failure.

Bellamy is still contracted to Manchester City but would jump at the chance to take charge at his home-town team in a player-manager role.

Just a few weeks ago, the striker insisted he 'definitely' wanted to stay at Cardiff if he could secure another season-long move from Eastlands because he is determined to get the club promoted.

But it remains to be seen whether City's powerbrokers would sanction the write-off of Bellamy's £90,000-a-week wage over the next 12 months, which would allow the 31-year-old to become Cardiff manager.

Jones had a 12-month notice period in his contract but the club's new owners revoked that shortly after assuming control - meaning they do not now have to pay about £780,000 in compensation.

Cardiff had postponed any decision until this week after seeing Jones linked with the West Ham job.

They thought they might be able to charge for his services, but Sam Allardyce's imminent arrival at Upton Park rendered that impossible.

But the call came out of the blue as Jones had held a meeting with his backroom staff at his house on Sunday night, where a list of transfer targets was drawn up.

so Jones is to be the new WHU manager then , and if no rolling contract why didnt CCFC sack him months ago ?
