83 graduates applying for each job

Mon Jun 27, 2011 10:24 pm

Says a lot doesn't it?

1) If you got GCSE's or A levels etc only you've got no chance

2) The price of tuition fees goes up as the competition for jobs does

Im moving abroad upon graduation. NQAT! :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Its amazing isnt it. I left uni with a degree and £12k worth of debt last summer. Im currently working for O2. Despite what some think, students dont instantly get well paid jobs upon graduating. I feel sorry for the buggers who are going to be leaving uni in 3-4 years time 50k in debt with no job at the end of it.

And to think, some people on here were slagging off students for protesting

Can you take that avatar with you?

University needs to sort it out, too many pointless degrees people in debt for no reason.

Oh and before you ask I graduated in 2008 with a 2:2 Bsc Psychology and Counselling and it was pointless.

To be honest right now I'll look for any type of job that'll have me.

As for a job linked to my career, I think luckily I'm in more of a "specialised" area in Games Development and with a growing industry and a decent portfolio it hopefully won't be back-breaking to find a job (I'm not saying its going to be easy).

I'm doing a sandwich course as well, which instead of 3 years in uni its 4 years, with the 3rd year being in the industry, which can only help and not hinder.

I will change it now. I like it though :( .

Yeah, some degrees are completely pointless. The money used to fund them should be going to research for better degrees.

Unless you want a specific job that needs qualifications then it's worthless. Experience is far more impressive .
Anyone with a degree in things like business have wasted good money and time.

Currently not in the industry, but doing the course in university. 3 A-levels or equivelant (I did a BTEC Nat Dip in IT Practioners). As for getting into the industry, if you don't want to do the degree, I know there are programmers that build a portfolio up independantly from their own learning, and I know there are people who have got into it by starting as game testers and working up from there.

The good thing about games development is there isn't just programming or graphics, making a game is just as big as making a movie. There are plenty of ways to be involved, through audio engineers, quality assurance (games testers), games designers (the people who actually make the ideas, etc), graphics (creating and designing the graphics/3D models), and programming :ayatollah:

I'm beginning to see that going to university is a con.

Infact I will go further. By charging fees all you are doing is keeping others in a job, a bit like the council tax.

What is even more of a windup is to those that introduced these fees. Did they pay for the degrees? Did they f**k.

Well not really. I think you're forgetting that some people like learning. They may go to a Uni.because they want to learn more about a certain subject, regardless of what they want to do. My friend is a parr time mature student. She only went to uni because she wanted something extra in her life.

Also, alot of jobs would prefer graduates regardless of their study. For example, if you have a degree, then you can get fast tracked for promotion in the police.

Employers want more than experience. I've been working for 10 years since I was 14. I still cant get a good job. So what chance has a 19year old with no degree got? And besides, theres so little jobs around, people might aswell go to uni and delay their career for a while.

Education should be affordable for everyone. Its our right. Whether you're going to Uni for a career or just because you want to expand your mind.

If people want to merely expand their minds, there are plenty of things - ie Open University. Equally, delaying career... personal choice. State shouldn't subsidise that.

The problem is the market is now saturated with so many people with degrees that degrees in and of themself mean asolutely nothing these days. Did a computer science degree; learnt absolutely nothing from it, at least nothing I've realistically used in anger. When lecturers have never worked in the real world, means their ideas nowhere near reflect best practises...

Successive governments have pushed the ideal of getting more and more people into Unis, so young students these days demand Uni places as a right, rather than being accepted on merit. Which thus dilutes the quality of degrees...

I went to uni in Aberystwyth to do Business IT, passed it, couldn't get a job at all. Nothing! I learnt poker whilst in uni and I'm now playing full time for a living.

I'm a Careers Adviser and have to say, a lot of what is said above is very true. I would seriously have a think if Uni is what you need, the Market is saturated with people with Degrees and so Employers want REAL experience... Plus is it worth the Debt? I would say not unless your Career choice means you HAVE to have a degree, such as Nursing, Teaching, whatever!
