Swansea City have joined Cardiff City - and around six other clubs - in the chase to sign in-demand winger Wayne Routledge.

The Swans have confirmed they have put in an offer of £1.5m for the Newcastle United player.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who has played for eight clubs already in his career, is also being linked with Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest.

“We have expressed an interest in Routledge and are in discussions with Newcastle,” a Swansea spokesman said.

Routledge’s agent Will Salthouse said the two Welsh clubs were among several bidding to sign the winger.

He said: “We are talking about maybe up to eight clubs with an interest in Wayne at this point in time.

“The interest in him is quite incredible and when you think he has helped three sides to the Premiership you know it is because players who can do that are worth their weight in gold.

“Wayne is keeping his options open, nothing is being ruled out and we hope to make a decision on the future within the next two weeks. He is open minded at this point.”

He added: “Wayne was very happy when he was at Cardiff. He wanted to stay. He was a real fan’s favourite there at the time but a deal could not be worked out.

“It would have solved a few things if Cardiff had signed him then.”

Having come through the ranks at Crystal Palace, the fast and tricky winger moved to Tottenham in 2005 in a £2m move.

He made just five appearances for Spurs before being shipped out for loan spells at Portsmouth and Fulham, before moving to Aston Villa in 2008.

However, he struggled to secure a first-team spot, and moved to Cardiff City on loan, before making himself a hate figure with many Bluebirds fans by snubbing a permanent move to South Wales in favour of a switch to QPR.

He then moved to Newcastle, before heading back to QPR on loan.

Looks like we're going to have a huge battle on our hands if we want him :ayatollah:

This is a turning point. If we can entice him it would make a statement when you see who is in for him. Suffice to say if a Championship club get him they will go up. He's done it three times already.
