ELVIS PRESLEY or Michael Jackson ?

ELVIS WITHOUT A DOUBT :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Michael Jackson the true King of Pop, Rock and Soul.

Michael Jackson was a pioneer, he led the way where others followed.

Michael Jackson inspired music at a time when the industry was in decline.

Michael Jackson took music and changed how you listened to it, how you viewed it ( music videos or short films ).

ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

Have you not seen the videos Mozzer, can you not remember Thriller day.

When MJ released a song or video, they would be simultaneously played throughout the world, for Black or White the video received a worldwide audience of 500 million.

michael jackson was in an age where commercial videos sold the songs not the content of the songs .

they didn't have all that razzamataz back in the 50/60/70's . just a 2 minute record which could only be heard via a radio

now that was pioneering

so beat it

You still really can't compare them, even numbers speak for themselves, I'm 18, I don't know a single Elvis song, rock'n'roll is dead, but pop/funk/soul is still kicking strong, you can hate MJ but you can't argue

Noel Gallagher. Wrote almost every song for the most successful rock'n'roll band ever.

James Brown without a shadow of a doubt for is music......jackie Wilson would make Michael Jackson look ordinary when it came to dancing, and of course the bottom line would have to be Ray Charles. Elvis was just ripping the black music off.

No your wrong Mozzer MJ lived in a time when no one knew how to commercialise but then Michael Jackson showed them. This was the guy that recorded the Thriller short film for 14 minutes for a pop video in 1983, at a time when others stood behind a microphone and in front of a black screen.

This was a guy who funded the video himself cause the record company had never heard of such an idea, a 14 minute video for a song.

Then whilst Billie Jean was riding high at Numero uno on the billboard,MJ instructed his record company to release Beat It, which after their protests, they did and Beat It overtook Billie Jean as number one in the charts, giving MJ 1 and 2 for the first time in the history of any artist.

James Brown, Jackie Wilson, were influences on MJ and were greats without a doubt, Michael Jackson brought their appeal to the whole world without prejudice.

Aherne you are wrong MJ did write some of his hits and is not given enough credit for the fact he wrote a lot of his songs. And as great as the Beatles are, they are a band and therefore cannot be entered into a debate of The King ;)

This thread actually has no point, guys who like Elvis will never admit that MJ is the King.

It's kinda like arguing who was more influential - Kraftwerk or Daft Punk

Re: " WHO WAS THE KING ? "

It seems the 'older' generation on here (sorry Annis) are going with Elvis, but the younger crowd are siding with Michael Jackson. Plus, as I know with my parents, Jackson lost a lot of credit with people their age because of the whole child sex scandal.

Personally, I like both, but talent wise, I think they both pale I'm comparison to Freddie Mercury who, for my money, was the greatest 'rock star' ever.

Re: " WHO WAS THE KING ? "

Simplest question ever posed to me this. Ask yourselves this, will Michael Jackson still be as popular as Elvis is, 35 years after his death? No. Will Michael Jackson's Nevernever land rake in what Gracelands rakes per annum? No

And to cap it all, I know Priscilla wasnt that old when Elvis got his hands into her, but she was a damn sight older than Jackson's boyfriends

Long live the King, Mr Presley.............and like mentioned earlier, Beatles No2 to him :ayatollah:

Re: " WHO WAS THE KING ? "

Tue Jul 26, 2011 8:44 am

I see what you're trying to say Mozzer but I have to agree with Carl. For what you're saying about Michael Jackson using commercialism to sell and not the music, the same could be said about Elvis. He was one of the first artists to use the "sex sells" gimmick. Would Elvis have been half as successful if he didn't have those boyish good looks and the swinging hips? What if you gave some munter his music?

Music has been more than just the music ever since radio was introduced. Even back in the 1950s it was all about the image. I don't want to go down the middle ground but I honestly don't think it's possible to compare Michael Jackson and Elvis. I prefer Michael Jackson but that's a generation thing. I can see why Elvis was so successful though.

Re: " WHO WAS THE KING ? "

Tue Jul 26, 2011 8:58 am

Both were years ahead of their time musically and both died years before they should have. I have the full discography of both and enjoy listening to either equally. I have 2 binders full of original Elvis score and I treasure them, had them over 40 years. Only one king mind - Elvis. Michael Jackson was the Prince and king in waiting unfortunately a little scandal put paid to that but he was a musical genius all the same. Without doubt these 2 were the 2 best recording artists and live performance artists there ever has been. Rest in peace both :ayatollah:

Disagree, imo King Of Soul - Marvin Gaye
As for bringing all 3 into 1, then MJ did that. Undoubtedly Marvin is the King of Soul.
Totally different times I actually think it is a good question as you will always have different views on this one.

Elvis broke the mold of rocking roll and changed the music scene as did jacko later in years.

I remember when Jacko hit the big time with Thriller and went to see him twice so I may go for Jacko but my mother and father will say Elvisand argue with me  but they remember Elvis so it was big for them like the Beatles are to them but one thing I will give Jacko one extra to Elvis he toured the world as Elvis never performed in the UK
