3G is quicker. E stands for edge. You mobile will revert to E when no 3G service.

H is A+
G is A
E is U
anything else not worth grading

H+ is the fastest, then H, Then 3G, Then E.
Yes any phone can pick up H providing the mast is close.

What is great is that there is still loads of areas which can't get 3G and yet there are looking to open up a new spectrum for 4G

I think with 4G, we'll see the return of unlimited high speed data on networks.

E is Edge, the older internet connection speed. 3G is the newer and now 3G+ is on most top handsets....all about speed and consistency.

3G is the highest connection speed for all mobile devices!
4G is not available yet

From what I remember, E (Edge) is the fastest 2g technology. It works by using multiple 2g channels, i.e. bonding multiple connections together. It tops out at around 400kb/s
3G is slightly newer and can go up to around 2Mb/s. HSPDA works in a similar way to edge and uses multiple 3g channels to boost the connection speed to about 15Mb/s. If you're on a 3G connection, you're more than likely to be on HSPDA, not all mobile phones and indeed mobile phone companies change the connection symbol to H (I don't think iphones do).
4G when it's available over here will boost speeds to anything up to 300Mb/s, the government is auctioning off the licenses for 4g in 2012 so we can expect 4g around 18months later I guess.
The 3g license auction made the government about £20bn when it was done 10 years ago, the 4g auction should put some pennies in the coffers if it's done properly.
