The programme talking to youngsters on C4 last night was an eye-opener.
Some were thicker than a cement pie, but one lad very eloquently put how
MP's defraud their expenses for £1000s, and only one or two got token
jail sentences. Most got away with the "it wasnt intentional"..Bankers got
away with scamming millions from us all in Insurance cons and overcharges..
these fuckers punishment was..Bonuses!!

..And a 14yr old kids family have been turfed out of their home by the
council cos he stole a £45 pair of trainers in the riots.

This is no way condones anything that has happened, but was food for thought
as to how these kids view their 'peers' nowadays

I believe our country has been split for a couple of years now and the problem is that the silent majority has remained just that "Silent" whilst our political leaders have got away serious fraud.

When the country allow a former Home Secretary to get away with claiming over £116k over a 6 year period in 2nd home expenses, when she actually didn't have a 2nd home, and then allow her punishment to be an apology to Parliament where does that place the countries moral compass.

It is a disgrace that in comparison that some families are likely to lose their home because of a criminal act by one of their children. We would all agree that stealing a £45 pair of trainers is wrong but the punishment must fit the crime and compared to the punishment dished out to Jackie Smith MP well this kid should get about 10 minutes Community Service.

Mrs Smith lost her seat at the last General Election but she continued to recieve her MP salary for 12 months, approx £75k, how can that be right for someone who so clearly defrauded the public purse. She also claimed for the hire of porno films on her MP expenses for her husband to watch of an evening.

Which is the greater crime a £45 pair of trainers or £116k of public money fraudulently claimed, our PM has quite rightly described these riots as criminal behaviour and has promised to hunt down those responsible.

Where is the political will to hunt down ALL those responsible for false expenses claims and bringing them before the courts as I believe until that happens our country will remain split and our political leaders will lack the moral authority to run our country.

I've had this food for thought for many years. It did not surprise me these riots. In a way we deserved it. The havers in this country have been allowed ot get away with having more. Eventually those that dont have will repel.

It wasn't just the looting was it. The burning down of business's and the loss of Jobs that this has caused. Riots i believe do not get covered in insurance claims. Peoples houses getting burnt down, Cars being burnt out and again insurance wont pay out if it is a result of a Riot. The looting was the least serious of those Riots instances but still any one involved should be Jailed and i have no sympathy for them. They are Scum and they are now trying to get the sympathy as the whole Country has turned on them big style.

i enjoyed watching that last night. loads of the youngsters spoke well on the show but so many excuses being made by so many people on the show and on the news etc.
good to hear what they think needs changing but they all kept talking over each other!!! couldn't understand some of it.

I have NO sympathy with the rioters.

but the very idea of Cameron standing up there condemning people

I've been preaching this for ages. I'm all for culprits being sent out to work to pay back their victims. Of course the problem comes to who will pay for this.

Good post- I also do not condone the way the rioters went about things, but they are having thier voice heard now. I unfortunately think we are turning More like the USA, plenty of rich getting richer, but with that comes poverty. I'm not saying most well off people dot work hard. But we are left with the situation where there is one lot of money, and if it's not spread about this is what is going to happen. Our country population is growing all the time and many large groups seem to just get left behind.

I heard one boy say 'these stuck up people just don't understand'. well I'm far from stuck up and I don't understand. Probably been in more trouble than that lad in my life, but I still gone out worked hard and got a good standing in life. But then I have been around motivated people. This lad also said 'I don't know anything else, I was born into poverty'. These are the boys I feel for!

They did it because they could there was no political statement. Those that are well off just joined in because of greed and to rebel. In my view those that took part have no voice no opinions they should be locked up or just put down.

I don't think people in this thread are condoning what the rioters did (well I'm certainly not) but the point is that it rings pretty hollow to hear a bunch of expense scamming politicians preaching about mending a broken society when they are as guilty as anyone. Who are the good role models and leaders for young people in this selfish, divided and celebrity obsessed society? Certainly not the politicians, not the bankers, not the corrupt phone tapping media or the policemen who accepted their bribes. Because of these sort of people it's probably why they look up to morons like Ashley Cole or the cast of The Only Way is Essex....

The sight of Cameron tub thumping in the commons was almost laughable. As if him or any other old etonians REALLY give a flying f**k about working class people losing thier homes and businesses, after all he's not likely to be buying a home in Peckham or Handsworth is he? There wont be rioting in Kensington or Knightsbridge will there? so his rich chums will be safe at night because they'll never have a problem getting a copper round there sharpish if needed anyway.
