With Cardiff City reportedly set to announce the signing of Icelandic International striker Heidar Helguson from QPR, we spoke to Adam Boxer over at Vital QPR to get his views on the striker:
Good in the air but under 6 foot – is he actually a target man?
100% yes. Heidar has proven himself an expert with his back to goal. His flick-ons are measured and sensible in respect to his surroundings and helped bring the creative players into play. In the Premier League his style did not change and it helped us to great effect at times. A case in point was his domination of Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium – a notoriously difficult place to get a result.
Has he played much as a lone striker for QPR?
In the Championship, certainly. Neil Warnock liked to adopt a 4-3-2-1 formation that meant that Heidar forayed up front and was tasked with holding the ball and bringing others into play. The calibre of flair players such as Adel Taarabt and Wayne Routledge thrived on this service.
Others have claimed he is an intelligent forward – fair?
Agreed, as mentioned above his distribution is always measured. His guided headers are always intelligent and accurate and helped get the best out of the rest on the park. While others will just flick-on aimlessly, Heidar always eyes that sensible avenue – if it isn’t there then the ball will stay with him until something presents itself.
How did he get on last season in the Premiership
We had three phases in the Premier League last season as you’ll be aware. The initial good start – this was helped greatly by Heidar and a goal against Stoke and an important penalty against Chelsea were just two defining moments in a memorable season. His job didn’t change and while that half a yard was sometimes lacking he adapted his game perfectly to play some of the better football I’ve seen from the Icelander.
Any particular strengths or weaknesses?
His weaknesses would definitely have to be his pace and his injury-prone nature – no question. As an intelligent footballer he tends to drop into gaps as opposed to beat people with pace and this counter-acts a lack of speed. He is prone to extended spells on the sidelines which is something we have found out and Bolton Wanderers supporters certainly took a great deal of delight in pointing out when we captured him.
Overall he has been a great success at the club and should this deal not go through there is definitely a case that he would be pushing for a place in the 25-man squad.

Well one of his weaknesses (pace) is covered by the rest of our young, athletic squad.
This is an intelligent signing and something that we missed badly last year.
Rudy wasn't up to the task but Heider will be!
