Newport County set to announce four signings

Thursday 17th May 2017

MICHAEL Flynn is set to announce his first new signings as manager of Newport County AFC this afternoon.

The Exiles boss currently has 10 players contracted for next season and the club will reveal four more signings today.

Defenders Dan Butler, Scot Bennett and Jamie Turley and midfielders Joss Labadie, Mark Randall and Sean Rigg all signed two-year deals under previous manager Warren Feeney last summer.

Striker Aaron Williams agreed an 18-month contract in January when he was signed by Feeney’s successor Graham Westley in January.

Academy graduate Tom Owen-Evans penned a new two-year contract last week.

And Jazzi Barnum-Bobb and Ben Tozer have both triggered new one-year options having made the requisite number of appearances in the 2016-2017 season.

Flynn has released 11 players so far and missed out on bringing loan star Alex Samuel back to Rodney Parade for next season when the forward joined League Two rivals Stevenage.

Seven of County’s Great Escape squad – goalkeepers Joe Day and James Bittner, defenders Mark O’Brien and Mickey Demetriou, winger Jennison Myrie-Williams and strikers Marlon Jackson and Lenell John-Lewis – are yet to agree new deals.

And Flynn is keen to keep David Pipe after the defender’s successful return to the club on loan from Eastleigh in January.

Pipe, who captained County to promotion to the Football League in 2013, played a key part in the club’s successful fight against relegation in 2016-2017.

He was released by Eastleigh the day before the Exiles beat Notts County to secure the League Two status on May 6.

Meanwhile, another 2013 Wembley hero has found a new club.

Former County goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley has joined Isthmian League Premier Division club Margate after leaving Hastings United of the Isthmian League Division One South.

Twickenham-born Pidgeley started his career at Chelsea and made two appearances under Jose Mourinho before moving on to Watford, Millwall, Carlisle United, Woking, Bradford City and Exeter City.

He spent three years at County after signing for Justin Edinburgh in the summer of 2012, making 74 appearances.

After a loan spell at Mansfield Town in 2015 he moved to Leatherhead and Forest Green Rovers before signing for Hastings last summer.
