Report: Cardiff City eyeing move for Preston North End defender

Thursday 18th May 2018

Preston North End's Greg Cunningham is said to be interesting Cardiff City.

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock is eyeing a move for Preston North End left-back Greg Cunningham, the Daily Mirror reports [18 May, page 60].

Cunningham has been a Preston regular over the past two campaigns, scoring three goals and creating 11 in 90 appearances since his transfer from Bristol City.

And the Ireland international could be difficult to prise away from Deepdale, where he remains under contract until 2019.

Cardiff's apparent interest is somewhat surprising, with former England Under-21 left-back Joe Bennett impressing in his first season in south Wales.

And unless he is given first team assurances, Cunningham is perhaps unlikely to fancy the move.

Preston finished above Cardiff on goal difference in this season's Championship, although the Bluebirds were among the division's top sides following Warnock's October appointment.

Cunningham, 26, began his career at Manchester City, where he was a teammate of Cardiff midfielder Emyr Huws.

Cardiff City targeting Preston North End left back Greg Cunningham — reports

Media Wales

Thursday 18th May 2017

Cardiff City are eyeing a move for Preston North End left back Greg Cunningham, according to reports.

Neil Warnock is interested in the former Manchester City youth product, who's been a regular for the Deepdale outfit for the past two seasons.

The 26-year-old Irishman, formerly of Bristol City and Nottingham Forest, appeared in 39 of Preston's 46 league fixtures in 2016/17, helping Simon Grayson's side to an impressive 11th-place, finishing above the Bluebirds on goal difference.

However, a Cardiff move for the left back would come as a surprise, given the late season form of Joe Bennett.

Young full back Declan John is among those players who could depart the club this summer, but Bennett scored a brace on the season's final day to put him in contention for a regular starting role next term.

Cunningham's Preston contract has another year to run so it may take a concerted effort from Bluebirds boss Warnock to prise him away from Deepdale.

Greg Cunningham interesting Cardiff City as Neil Warnock investigates possibility of signing an ex-Bristol City favourite - reports - Bristol Post

Thursday 18th May 2017

Greg Cunningham is rumoured to be interesting Cardiff City.

The Daily Mirror claim that Neil Warnock is keeping a close eye on the Preston North End full-back, who was sold by Steve Cotterill two years ago to the surprise of many fans at Bristol City.

The 26-year-old has been ever present for the Lilywhites during the past two seasons and, along with Leeds United defender Luke Ayling – another player controversially sold by Lee Johnson last year – has racked up some decent statistics in the Sky Bet Championship – including playing the second most minutes of any Preston player this campaign.

Greg Cunningham
He is contracted at Deepdale until 2019 and has picked up 11 assists and three goals in his time there - one coming against the Robins during the 2015/16 season in a game at Ashton Gate.

The former Manchester City left-back also has four international caps to his name and helped Preston to 11th in the table this term.

Johnson, meanwhile, will likely be on the lookout for new full-backs, but more so on the right side.

Sunderland loanee Adam Matthews has been a disaster this season, Zak Vyner is untested and Mark Little has just been released after three years at BS3.

Why would Warnock be interested in another full back? We have strength in numbers Peltier, Richards, Bennet and Connolly

What if one of these is getting sold in the summer ... If it was to be one, for me it's Connolly.

Connolly is a centre back who can do a job at right back. Richards and Peltier are right backs who can do a job at left back. Bennett is our only proper left back and needs competition, so I can perfectly understand Warnock targeting another left back.

In all fairness I think Bennett Pelts and Richars could be some of the best wing backs in the league next season, Richards has done so well considering some of the shit us fans were giving him at the start, hoping next season he does a decent job for us !!
