Children as young as 10 were injured following violence that broke out after the Middlesbrough v Sheffield United game at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday (12th August)

Senior police officers have condemned the disorder saying that 'violence in football is completely unacceptable'

The trouble began just before the final whistle in the stadium, following a pitch invasion by some away fans.

The violence continued outside the ground in the coach car park, where in excess of 200 people were embroiled in the fighting.

A police officer has been injured and taken to hospital.

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences and are in police custody; however arrests are expected to increase as the investigation unfolds.
“We will absolutely not tolerate violence of this nature and we will work to identify the offenders and bring them to justice.

“The vast majority of fans accept that football is a family game, watched by children, parents and grandparents. It’s terrifying for children to witness such violence, or be innocently embroiled in it as their parents frantically try to keep them safe.

“Unfortunately a small minority of people behave in a manner which puts innocent fans at risk. We will be working closely with Middlesbrough Football Club and Sheffield United as part of our investigations.”

– ASSISTANT CHIEF CONSTABLE JASON HARWIN, CLEVELAND POLICE

A police officer also had to be taken to hospital with injuries sustained during the clashes.

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences and are in police custody.

But the force warned that the number of arrests is expected to rise as the investigation unfolds.

Jason Harwin, a former South Yorkshire Police officer and current assistant chief constable of Cleveland Police, said: 'We will absolutely not tolerate violence of this nature and we will work to identify the offenders and bring them to justice.

"The vast majority of fans accept that football is a family game, watched by children, parents and grandparents. It's terrifying for children to witness such violence, or be innocently embroiled in it as their parents frantically try to keep them safe.

"Unfortunately a small minority of people behave in a manner which puts innocent fans at risk. We will be working closely with Middlesbrough and Sheffield United as part of our investigations."

Middlesbrough won the game 1-0 after Rudy Gestede's first half header.

Anyone with information that may help police are asked to call Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101.

Terry I've argued against moving home fans closer to away fans at our ground like some of our fans want! And this was basis of my arguement having two sets fans being able to mingle together after game, ccs was designed to keep fans apart and this incident is reason why. :old:

Terry,

No they've been their for yrs, My last two visits with City in the last 4 years,Cardiff fans have been there, but we only took 89 fans and 110 fans up there. Sheffield United had well over 2,000 fans, so of course that meant they were really close.

Villa supporters were right by home supporters yesterday and they were pissed off too but didn't react in this way, I hope the supporters involved are punished as I feel if this was Cardiff City it would have been all over the news and the supporters would end up in prison

Very true they were close but being in seats and being outside stadium is totally different! Same as ninian park fans close inside ground but outside no segregation other than coppers stopping fans getting at each other but still aggro with stones ect being thrown in car park. We do not have police presence as such at city games now except for games considered at risk of trouble! Do not want aggro at games as it will effect away games (restrictions ) ect ect

Annis you think having 1k plus Leeds fans next to city fans and being able to mingle after game is a good idea? :o agree that it can be good but not all fans ours included are not adverse to some aggro. :old:

First Allan, who said mingle after the game? ? We go out different ways :thumbright:

Well City fans have been next to Leeds on many occasions at Elland RD and they cope well and with all the heavy bans/cctv / an area of segregation then can't see a problem :thumbright:
Went well in Premier League, a fact :thumbright:

All well and good at Leeds when only couple hundred or so of our fans go and have heavy stewarding/police? but how long has it taken to get unrestricted travel sure wont take long if we get involved in trouble before back to square one with bubbles ect ect? The point is do you want risk trouble and all the problems associated with it! And finally why was ccs designed to have maximum segregation of fans after a game? Probably because ninian park had lots problems after games with fans being only a line of coppers
Apart club learned from that obviously, I should know as stopped from going sloper rd for 20mins or so after games by police because of fans throwing stones ect at each other on way to car park. Yes great to have fans closer together but not at risk of trouble from idiots on both sides.

its part of the matchday experience though allan, i think it's wrong that the good city fans that want abit of banter with the away fans got to suffer because you get a few idiots(same as all clubs) trying to bring the 80's back.

On my last three visits to Leeds, No heavy stwarding, No heavy police, never saw them.
It's been unrestricted travel to them on our last few visits :thumbright: and you know that as I put it out :thumbright:

'Mingle' after game'. You mean mingle after the game?
How does that work? The Grange End fans move out towards the retail parks whilst the away fans use completely different exits towards Sloper Road surely. Couldn't be further away.

Correct :thumbright:

You can have fans next to each other nowadays and have good banter/atmosphere.

Annis you think having 1k plus Leeds fans next to city fans and being able to mingle after game is a good idea? :o agree that it can be good but not all fans ours included are not adverse to some aggro. :old:

'Mingle' after game'. You mean mingle after the game?
How does that work? The Grange End fans move out towards the retail parks whilst the away fans use completely different exits towards Sloper Road surely. Couldn't be further away.

Paul,

I've tried to explain this to Allan, but for some reason he is not grasping it and has got something else in head? ?

Annis, I know.
There is always something in this guys head and I don't think anyone knows what it is 90% of the time!
Very strange.

Paul, I think he tried to be opposite to me as usual, but has got himself in a right muddle again and does not know what he's really debating about

Sheffield United will ban any fans found guilty of violence following loss to Middlesbrough

Sheffield Star

Monday 14th August 2017

Sheffield United insist they will ban any of their supporters found guilty of involvement in violent scenes described by police as 'terrifying' following the 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough.

The Football Association is set to investigate clashes between 200 fans following Saturday's Championship match which saw one officer hospitalised as rival supporters threw bricks and traded punches, leading to five arrests. That number is expected to rise as the search continues to identify the perpetrators, after children as young as 10 were unwittingly caught up in the disturbance. The EFL has also asked to be kept updated with the on-going police investigation.

Andrew Birks, Sheffield United's chief operating officer, said: "We will not condone this type of behaviour, particularly when the vast majority of our thousands of our fans attend home and away fixtures simply to enjoy watching the Blades in action. We are assisting Cleveland Police and others to identify the troublemakers and bring them to justice, which may include the potential use of banning orders."

Middlesbrough FC declined to comment, but the club is expected to issue a statement on Monday following talks with Cleveland Police after sifting through CCTV footage which captured clashes both inside and outside the Riverside Stadium, where a crowd of almost 27,000 witnessed Garry Monk's side claim a first win of the season.
