About Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is a professional association football club based in Sheffield, England. The team competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Formed as an offshoot of The Wednesday Cricket Club in 1867, they went by the name of The Wednesday Football Club until changing to their current name in 1929.

Wednesday are one of the oldest football clubs in the world of any code, and the third oldest professional association football club in England, excluding clubs with informal or disputed foundation dates. In 1868 they won the Cromwell Cup, only the second tournament of its kind, and in 1877 they won the inaugural Sheffield Challenge Cup, the oldest county cup in England. They were founding members and inaugural champions of the Football Alliance in 1889, before joining The Football League three years later. In 1992 they became founder members of the Premier League. The club has spent most of its league history in English football's top flight, but they have not played at that level since being relegated in 2000.

The Owls, as they are nicknamed, have won four league titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup and one FA Community Shield. Wednesday have also competed in UEFA cup competitions on four occasions, reaching the quarter-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1963.

Since 1899 the club has played its home matches at Hillsborough stadium, a near 40,000 capacity stadium in the north-west Sheffield suburb of Owlerton.

Be great to win Saturday but if NW sticks with that 11 then it's a loss for me.

If we change 3-4 then I can see 2-0 win.

On his history with Sheffield Wednesday

NEIL WARNOCK:

"I always enjoy going up to Hillsborough and the welcome I receive there."

"They’ll bring a tremendous amount down and it’ll be a good atmosphere, but our fans will play a massive role in the next three home matches. The sound when the stadium when is buzzing is unbelievable and we need them behind us in the next three home fixtures.”

On facing the Owls

NEIL WARNOCK:

"They’ve been so close."

"I thought last year if they’d beat Huddersfield they would have gone up. I like Carlos, I think he’s a smashing man, and they play good football. It’s the type of game you looking forward to, I can’t see it being a poor game, I think there’ll be excitement.”

Cardiff v Sheff Wed Sky preview

16/09/17

Neil Warnock will be keen to see a response from his Cardiff side

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock could freshen up his side for Sheffield Wednesday's visit in the Sky Bet Championship.

Warnock shouldered the blame for Cardiff's first league defeat of the season at Preston in midweek after saying he decided against making changes. Danny Ward, Lee Tomlin and deadline-day signings Liam Feeney and Craig Bryson are those under consideration.

Callum Paterson will build up his fitness in an under-23 game against Burnley on Monday, the summer arrival from Hearts having yet to make his debut following knee surgery.

Wednesday quartet Steven Fletcher, Ross Wallace, Barry Bannan and Kieran Lee are all hoping to be fit. Head coach Carlos Carvalhal said all four "have a little something" to recover from following the midweek home win against Brentford.

Midfielder Sam Hutchinson (knee) and defender Glenn Loovens (hip) are still out, but hope to return to full training next week. Forward Fernando Forestieri and midfielder George Boyd will both be sidelined for several weeks after recent knee and shoulder operations respectively.

Opta stats

Cardiff haven't lost a home league game against Sheffield Wednesday since April 2007, winning five and drawing two games since that defeat.

The Owls are without a clean sheet in nine league visits to Cardiff - Martin Hodge was the last goalkeeper to record a shutout in a 2-0 win in May 1984.

Neil Warnock hasn't lost a home match against Sheffield Wednesday since March 1991, when he was in charge of Notts County and lost 2-0 at Meadow Lane to an Owls side managed by Ron Atkinson; in all competitions since, he has remained unbeaten in 11 games (W5 D6).

Gary Hooper has scored in his last three league matches for Sheffield Wednesday, netting three goals; he hasn't scored in four consecutive Football League matches since February 2008 when he played for Hereford United.

Cardiff have won more points (5) from goals in the last 15 minutes of Championship games this season than any other side in the division.

Prutton's prediction

Cardiff have come back down to earth with a bit of a bump this week, drawing last weekend then being thumped at Preston on Tuesday.

I expect Neil Warnock to get a reaction from his side but Carlos Carvalhal seems to have settled on his side and I think Sheffield Wednesday will get a draw here.

Prutton predicts: 1-1 (5/1 with Sky Bet)

Would love to see Zohore & Ward up top together... fun fact, the only time Zohore scored this season is when Ward was on the pitch.

Considering players fatigue and that Warnock mentioned there would be changes, this would be something I would half expect and also be happy with

NEIL WARNOCKS CITY TEAM HAVE NO INJURY WORRIES / WHILST WEDNESDAY HAVE SOME BIG NAME INJURY DOUBTS

Former Cardiff City star Glenn Loovens is one of several big-name Sheffield Wednesday players ruled out for this weekend's clash with the Bluebirds.

Star striker Fernando Forestieri and new signing George Boyd are also sidelined for Carlos Carvalhal's side as the Owls go in search of their third successive victory.

Sam Hutchinson (knee), Almen Abdi (knee/abductor) add to Wednesday's woes, with a hip problem keeping club captain Loovens on the treatment table. Forestieri — whose goal sealed a 1-0 win for the Owls last time the teams met in April — has a long-term knee problem, while former Burnley man Boyd is out with a shoulder injury.

It means record signing Jordan Rhodes could start alongside Gary Hooper up front, with Stephen Fletcher also an option for the visitors.

Cardiff haven't beaten Wednesday in five attempts, their last victory coming in September 2014 when Sean Morrison scored in both goals as the Bluebirds won 2-1.

It was revealed last week that Wednesday nearly signed Cardiff new boy Craig Bryson on deadline day, but plumped for fellow on-loan Derby midfielder Jacob Butterfield instead. He may start at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Carvalhal, who has led the Hillsborough club to successive play-off appearances in his two full seasons in charge, is paying no attention to the Championship table that currently sees Cardiff second on 16 points from seven games, with sixth-placed Wednesday four points back.

The Owls have made their best start to a season under the Portuguese.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal
But he said: “Things will be more clear in December and January in the table.

“At the end, the best teams will be up and the worst teams will be down. We have to manage expectations. That is very important.

“This competition is very hard; all teams can lose points and Cardiff is one of the more difficult stadiums to play in.”

Predicted XI (4-4-2 diamond): Westwood; Hunt, Lees, van Aken, Reach; Jones, Wallace, Butterfield, Bannan; Hooper, Fletcher.

Some positive stats Cardiff City v Sheffield Wednesday

The midweek defeat at Preston was a bit of a blow to the lightning start of the Bluebirds, so here are some statistics that point to a positive results today.

Cardiff have not lost at home to Sheffield Wednesday since 2007, having won five and drawn two.

Neil Warnock has not lost to Wednesday at home since March 1991 - when his Notts County lost 2-0 to Ron Atkinson’s Owls.

Cardiff have not lost back-to-back league matches under Warnock since January.

The Bluebirds have a 100% record at home

Cardiff v Owls in brief...

Wednesday are unbeaten since the opening day and have won their last two

The Owls have won just one of their away games so far

The teams drew 1-1 here last season with Daniel Pudil scoring for Wednesday

Cardiff have won all three of their home games so far

Wednesday haven't won at Cardiff since April 2007 when Leon Clarke and Deon Burton scored in a 2-1 victory

Neil Warnock hasn't lost at home to Wednesday since 1991 when he was Notts County manager. The Owls won 2-0 that day in the old Division Two

Cardiff are expected to make a couple of changes from the team that lost to Preston in midweek. Wednesday had a few players carrying knocks but aren't expected to make wholesale changes
