About Birmingham City

Birmingham City Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of Birmingham, England. Formed in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, they became Small Heath in 1888, then Birmingham in 1905, finally becoming Birmingham City in 1943. The team compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

As Small Heath, they played in the Football Alliance before becoming founder members and first ever champions of the Football League Second Division. The most successful period in their history was in the 1950s and early 1960s. They achieved their highest finishing position of sixth in the First Division in the 1955–56 season and reached the 1956 FA Cup Final, progressed to the final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1960 and 1961, and won their first major trophy, the League Cup, in 1963, beating Aston Villa 3–1 on aggregate. They won the latter competition for the second time in 2011. They have played in the top tier of English football for around half of their history: the longest period spent outside the top division, between 1986 and 2002, included two brief spells in the third tier of the English League, during which time they twice won the Football League Trophy.

St Andrew's has been their home ground since 1906. They have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with Aston Villa, their nearest neighbours, with whom they play the Second City derby. The club's nickname is Blues, after the colour of their kit, and their fans are known as Bluenoses.

Birmingham could have that new manager boost. The appointment has come at a good time, he'll likely have had a bit of time to get to know the players and establish a bit of his own philosophy and tactics with the players due to the international break.

Can see this being a draw :old:

Neil Warnock, who brought 10 players to the Welsh capital in the summer window, has used just 20 in Cardff's 11 matches.

Cardiff's opponents on Friday night, Birmingham City, have used the most at 29. It shows how Cardiff's squad will be stretched over the course of a gruelling season with injuries always possible.

My View Steve Cotterill

He is a very high strung and intense person.

I actually like Steve Cotterill. unless one team SURRENDERS there will be a few yellow and maybe a red card.

The Manager : Steve Cotterill. WE ARE HIS 1ST GAME IN CHARGE. He is a feet on the ground , no non-sense , aggressive, motivational type of manager. He is a poor (to average) Warnock type - but not as good technically, recruitment wise or as a motivator.

STEVE COTTERILL HAS CONFIRMED THAT THREE KEY PLAYERS ARE BACK IN TRAINING AHEAD OF BLUES' HOME FIXTURE AGAINST CARDIFF CITY ON FRIDAY EVENING.
Record signing Jota, striker Che Adams and midfielder Jason Lowe have all returned to the training pitches after overcoming their respective hamstring injuries.

Although they are available for the matchday squad, Cotterill was unable to confirm if they would start because of the limited training they have been able to undertake since their return.

That just leaves goalkeeper David Stockdale (arm) and full-back Carl Jenkinson (shoulder) sidelined.

"The injured players are a lot better now all of them," said Cotterill.

"They're all on their way back strongly.

“We've just got to make sure there's been enough training in them.

"Jota, Lowe and Adams are all available for the matchday squad."

Meanwhile, Cheikh Ndoye has returned unscathed from international duty.

Steve Cotterill has described his players' response in training as ‘excellent’ and says they are in good spirits ahead of his first game in charge against Cardiff City.

Cotterill has had just under two weeks to work with his squad since taking over as First Team Manager.

And he has wasted no time in trying to instil a sense of positivity amongst them, despite their current league predicament.

“I am happy with their response for sure,” said the Blues boss.

“If you saw them on the training ground this morning, I wouldn't say they were like that at the beginning part of last week. But probably the less said about that the better.

“They have been excellent, they really have. They are in good spirits, we got a lot of work done last week and a fair bit done this week as well.”

In terms of changes to the training regime, Cotterill said he has been examining every aspect of it.

“We have looked at all aspects of trying to get a successful football team together,” he continued.

“Probably every aspect that you could mention we have tried to cram in this last two weeks.

“It's all about positivity. We have been positive from the word go on the Monday morning when I started after Hull City.

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock hopes midfielder Aron Gunnarsson will be fit to face Birmingham City on Friday after leading Iceland to their first World Cup.

Warnock was worried about Gunnarsson's fitness before Iceland's qualifiers with Turkey and Kosovo.

The 28-year-old played in both ties and films of him joining in the country's celebrations emerged on social media.

Warnock joked: "He should be available, but we have not breathalysed him yet."

Championship leaders Cardiff are also waiting to assess defender Bruno Ecoule Manga, who was part of the Gabon team hit by an outbreak of sickness in Morocco.

Philippines goalkeeper Neil Etheridge is also due to return from international duty.

Gunnarsson completed light training on Wednesday and, although Warnock had warned Iceland beforehand over his fitness, the Cardiff manager struck a more conciliatory tone on Thursday given the circumstances.

"I was disappointed. I said to Kevin Blackwell and Ronnie Jepson [Warnock's assistants], Turkey was the biggest game, he did not want to let them down," Warnock said.
"He played 64 minutes or something like that and the second game the same. I was slightly disappointed they were 2-0 up against a team that had one point in the competition that he didn't come off at half-time.

"But as Jepson and Blacky said, 'It's the biggest game in their history, he's the captain, would you?' I see their point of view really.

"It's such a fantastic achievement. Iceland's not as big as Cardiff, to get to the World Cup finals is a fantastic achievement."

Warnock added: "If there's any doubt about him, we won't play him."

Birmingham could have record signing Jota available to face Cardiff on Friday night.

The £6.5million striker has been missing with a hamstring injury but is nearing a return while Che Adams and Jason Lowe are looking to overcome their own hamstring issues to feature.

Emilio Nsue was due to return from international duty with Equatorial Guinea until Thursday which would give him a very short turnaround to face the Sky Bet Championship leaders. Arsenal loanee Carl Jenkinson is also out having dislocated his shoulder against Reading seven weeks ago.

Cardiff midfielder Aron Gunnarsson will be assessed after playing in the two games which secured Iceland's World Cup qualification. Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock was unhappy before the international break that Gunnarsson reported for Iceland duty after missing Cardiff's previous two games with hip and thigh problems.

But Gunnarsson started Iceland's wins over Turkey and Kosovo and Warnock will make a late decision on whether he plays at St Andrew's. Bruno Manga and Neil Etheridge will also be monitored after returning late from respective international duty with Gabon and the Philippines, while on-loan midfielder Craig Bryson is available again after missing the draw with Derby two weeks ago as he was unable to play against his parent club.

' The Key Men '

Craig Gardner (Birmingham)

The 30-year-old joined the Blues on a permanent deal from West Brom in the summer having spent the latter half of the previous campaign on loan at St Andrew's, and the experienced midfielder will need to help Birmingham's midfield tick against the Bluebirds while creating opportunities for the likes of Lukas Jutkiewicz and Jota.

Craig Bryson (Cardiff City)

The Scot was ineligible to face parent club Derby in the final game before the international break but his energy - as shown in the magnificent 3-1 win against Leeds - will be vital in the centre of the park for the Bluebirds if they're to break down Birmingham's midfield men.
