Former Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay favourite to take over as Scotland manager after Gordon Strachan departs

Malky Mackay 2/1

Thursday 12th October 2017

Former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay is the joint favourite to succeed Gordon Strachan as Scotland manager.

Mackay is 2/1 along with former Manchester United and Everton boss David Moyes to take over the Tartan Army, after Strachan oversaw a failed World Cup qualifying campaign.

It was revealed on Thursday that Strachan and his assistant Mark McGhee will leave the Scottish national team. Their qualification campaign ended in agony after a 2-2 draw with Slovenia left them third in the group.

Mackay, who left the Bluebirds under a cloud in 2013, went on to join Wigan Athletic before taking up a role as performance director with the Scottish FA last year.

He now tops a list of candidates which also includes Moyes, Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, Alex McLeish and Sam Allardyce.

Strachan in a statement on the Scottish FA website said: “I said on my first day as Scotland manager that it was the proudest moment of my career and that I wanted to put a smile back on the nation’s face again. I share the profound disappointment at missing out on the play-offs, especially having worked so hard to fight our way back into contention.

“The players should receive immense credit for that resilience in coming back from a difficult start and I would like to thank each and every player who has come in to represent their country.

“Together we have shared some really magical moments and those memories will live with me for ever.

“Of course, what made those moments special was the unwavering support of our fans. Through highs and lows you have stayed with the team and my biggest regret is not being able to provide the finals tournament you deserve. "

Next Scotland manager odds (according to BetVictor)

Malky Mackay 2/1

David Moyes 2/1

Derek McInnes 8/1

Alex McLeish 10/1

Michael O'Neill 12/1

Sam Allardyce 14/1

Paul Lambert 16/1

Graham Alexander 20/1

Scott Gemmill 25/1

Annis, I'm with you on this! :thumbright:

Could be a golden and deserved opportunity for Malky (the SFA have been impressed with his work and conduct for them in recent times) so let us hope a certain Malaysian entrepreneur doesn't try to take centre stage yet again! ;)

I hope he gets the job. Certainly the best of the bunch mentioned above, inc. David Moyes! :ayatollah:

Disagree Moyes is a better manager imo, Malky only proved himself in the championship whilst he was given 10m which now would be the equivalent to 20m to spend. Moyes did a great job with Preston and the job he managed to do with Everton was incredible keeping them a top 8 team and getting them in Europe whilst having basically no funds which got him the UTD job, granted the Sunderland job didn't go well but they have been in free fall for years. I would say he's in the top 3 though on that list. Think Moyes should get the job though.

Neil MacDonald: Look at how those tactics worked for Ireland.

Steve Perry <>< We won the Championship by 8pts and a +27 goals difference under Malky.

Neil MacDonald: Plus 9 from January 1st on. Finished the season with a million draws. Ireland had a similar GD to us.

Shaun Crichton: ONE OF THE BEST MANAGERS WE HAVE EVER HAD. UP THERE WITH NEIL WORNOCK AND DAVE JONES.

I think Malky already has a good thing going on with the SFA and if he can continue to shape our future while someone else takes the senior squad then it might not be a bad thing.

Whoever comes in has a fair bit of work to do with the squad regardless. I'l be surprised if we see some of the last squad selected again, not all of them through their own choice either.

You would massively disappointed if Malky got it when Moyes was available though.

Malky has already proved at Wigan, that without money to spend and therefore talent to work with, he is a very average manager and Scotland hardly have a rich vein of talent.
Has to be David Moyes, out of that lot, if indeed he wants the job

Moyes confidence is shot since his Man Utd debacle (not all his fault) and it has clearly taken its toll in the jobs he has taken on since. Malky, on the other hand, is chomping at the proverbial bit to prove his worth and coupled with his fierce Scottish pride, those reasons alone make him the better option to me :thumbright: :ayatollah:

He's the best manager we've had in the 55 years I've supported City. His record proves it. When he took over after Jones he only had SIX outfield players contracted for the following season. Phenomenal achievement.

You still turned up and watched whilst the club went on their journey though and the end certainly justified the mean in Malky's case!

One thing people forget so easily is that Malky delivered Premier League football to Cardiff City FC for the one and (currently) only time and it was on a tight budget with next to no players in Season One; yet we still achieved the dream and watched our club take Liverpool to the very last kick of a Penalty Shoot Out in the Football League Cup at Wembley...

Nearly 40,000 City fans (probably including you) appear to have thought differently at the time, but don't let that cloud your reflective judgement!

No matter what my own feelings regarding the off-field issues that led to Malky leaving, he was a great manager for Cardiff City FC on the pitch and few debated that at the time! ;) :ayatollah:

The Scotland job is a poison chalice and he'd have nothing to work with. Personally the Scottish national team are dead to me, so in truth I don't really care but as a career move I don't see it being a positive for Marky.
