“ Man Utd to subsidise fans after high ticket prices “

Manchester United will charge Sevilla fans £89 to attend the Champions League last-16 tie at Old Trafford on 13 March in response to the Spanish club's "unfair and excessive" ticket pricing.

United say they will use the proceeds to subsidise fans attending the first leg in Spain on 21 February.

The La Liga side are asking for £35 more than they took from Liverpool fans in the group stages in November.

Sevilla are not breaching Uefa rules and are charging their own fans more.

United said they had taken the decision as "a deterrent to future opponents who look to increase ticket prices for our travelling supporters".

United fans will be refunded £35 before their trip to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, with any additional money donated to the Manchester United Foundation.

In response to complaints from ticket holders, United outlined their stance in a letter, which was issued on Wednesday.

It read: "In this instance we believe that our travelling supporters are unfairly being subjected to increased/excessive ticket prices from the host club.

"Ultimately Sevilla have not agreed to significantly lower the price to what we view as a reasonable level.

"Therefore, we have taken the difficult decision to charge Sevilla fans the same amount as our fans have been charged for the away fixture."

Good for them.

Wish we'd do the same to clubs like Leeds, Sheff Weds, QPR and Bristol City, all of who charge over £30 for the privilege of visiting their shitty grounds.

Are you sure that's right? You may well be correct but do you know where this agreement is set out?

Are Sheffield Wednesday really charging their own fans £33 to sit behind the goal at the opposite end to where they put us?

If they are it's amazing that anyone can afford to go to games anymore!

There are no current Rules on how much a club can charge and 'away' fans can be charged higher prices than home fans to watch the same match, despite often having worst seats/views of the ground. This is usually achieved through simply charging away fans more to enter the stadium or through different ticketing structures/incentives to 'home' supporters.

EFL Rules on away fans

34.2.1 Each Club must make provision for at least 2,000 visiting supporters at every home match or such number as represents 10% of the Club’s certified capacity, if less than 2,000. The League may, on the prior written application of a Club, suspend this Regulation or reduce the figure either for a particular League Match or for a period of time.

34.2.2 Clubs are required to sell tickets for their away matches if required to do so by the Home Club and similarly Home Clubs are required to supply tickets for their Home Matches to the Away Club for sale by the Away Club to its supporters if so requested by the Away Club. These tickets are to be made available on a sale or return basis and must be ordered by the Away Club at least five weeks before the League Match to which they relate. The Home Club must deliver those tickets to the Away Club at the latest four weeks before the League Match to which they relate. Where any match is arranged at shorter notice the above steps shall be taken as soon as is reasonably practicable. Visiting Supporters should also have the same opportunity to take advantage of pre-booking discounts that apply to home supporters.

34.2.3 For League Matches only, the Away Club shall be entitled to a commission representing 5 (five) per cent of the aggregate sales (exclusive of VAT) of tickets sold on behalf of the Home Club, unless otherwise agreed between the Clubs. The Away Club shall submit a VAT invoice, in respect of the commission due, to the Home Club within five working days of the date of the match

Note: If it was the FA Cup (under the control of the FA) the minimum would be 15% for away supporters.

yes i am 100% sure...and yes they are charging their own fans that much for similar seating..
its a LONG STANDING AGREEMENT between clubs that has not been broken in the many years its been in place...
and is the reason that when our club {and others } do offers EG the Leeds game ,they are through ST holders and members and not open to joe public who should they ring up for tickets in the corresponding opposite corner to the away end were charged exactly what Leeds fans were charged..
prior to the agreement many clubs did charge more citing extra police/stewards/damage as the reasons..
correct sven its not a RULE but no one said it was....its a well known well established agreement though.

Just had a look and it appears Leeds certainly charged their own fans a similar amount to their own fans for a Category A games versus Cardiff City at Elland road last season :thumbright:

the price for a non member adult on Sheffield Kop week Sat is £33...same as for us in the opposite end.
ironically more often than not away fans in the prem are charged less than home fans due to the £30 ceiling for away tickets.

have to add....its £ 33 for a Sheffield fan to turn up on the day and get a seat behind the goal for the game againt us..
it was only £21 to turn up and buy a seat in the Canton for the correesponding home fixture.

A } cheap as chips in comparison.
B } very difficult to compete with clubs charging 50% more than we do.

but we should throw free cup games in...

i think 30 should be the ceiling for championship football..
but be grateful for our price structure.£ 169 for an adult half season ticket in the Canton covers 12 games.
or you could buy tickets for 5 Sheffield Wednesday games sat on their Kop and have 4 quid change...

So are Sevilla charging £ 89 quid to get into their game with Man Utd ? Seems an awful lot to me. Or have they up their price by £ 35 and Man Utd have matched their increase. If Sevilla are charging man utd fans £ 89 then fair enough. I think its a fairer system than operates in the EFL at the moment. If Leeds fans were having to pay £ 42 quid every away game they're fans would be up in arms.

Yep, they'll get the message that their so-called 'fans' are freeloaders only interested in whats in it for them rather than supporting the team for all competitive games; even those outside the Championship! ;)

You seem to be oblivious of the fact that season ticket and other gate money doesn't come anywhere near covering the costs of running a competitive professional football club but so long as you think you're 'entitled' then I guess you'll not be attending any cup games where you have to pay this season no matter who we play, eh? ;)
