Following are the points earned by 2nd placed teams in the last 10 seasons : (16-17) 93 Brighton (15-16) 89 Middles (14-15) 89 Watford (13-14) 93 Burnley (12-13) 79 Hull (11-12) 88 Southam (10-11) 84 Norwich (09-10) 91 WBA (08-09) 83 Birming (07-08) 76 Stoke What it shows is that there are no hard establised conclusions. A spread of 79 to 93 is very big. As it stands because the competition between us , Villa & Fulham is so keen it is unlikely that the upper figure (93) will be needed. Of course Derby may yet have a run and Wolves may get a wobble. It is still a tad too early to predict. I believe 90 points should do it. 6 wins 2 draws & 3 losses would probably be enough.

We are averaging exactly 2 points per game. We just need to keep that up to finish on 92 points.

I see it finishing like the 15/16 season, when Boro went up with 89 points, 5 wins 4 draws 2 losses needed

Before last night I had previously said;

"In the season we were promoted we only gained 17pts from our last 12 games.

After 34 games we had 70pts only 3 more than now.

We were promoted as Champions with 87pts.

Will 6 wins and 2 draws be enough?"

It could be as little as 5 wins and 2 draws now.

Agree you can't go by previous seasons, can be a big difference in the points needed for promotion or to avoid relegation. Even if you could go by past campaigns, I would tend to look at the points the third placed team had achieved rather than the runners up. It could be the case that the runners up would still have been promoted with less points that they actually achieved depending on how many points they finished ahead of the third placed side.
Even though Brighton finished on 93 points last season, 86 would have been enough for them to go up.

It’s going to be a testy 11 games, every championship game is different and equally difficult, but we are a team who work as a team, we run through brick walls for the gaffer, we do the basics well and we see the game out, we just need to be patient and take a game at a time, we certainly need to get at least a point on the road again Villa and Derby, we can do this

It's not just about how many points, but also who you get those points against.

If we lose to Villa and Wolves, and Villa beat Wolves, then we're playing catchup, even if we win the rest of our matches.

If we beat Villa and Wolves, we can afford to lose other games as we'll have a gap on teams below us.

The second place team might have got 90 points, for arguments sake, but perhaps the third place team might have got only 82 points. Therefor the points “needed” would have been 83. If that makes any sense.

For those interested I have added the points that would have got you 2nd place. ie 1pt more than 3rd.

West Brom wasted their time in 2010. They would have gone up with 11pts less.

Exactly. The points for 2nd place is irrelevant, it’s what you need to finish above 3rd is the key number.

Just keep winning, doesn't matter what anyone else does then. An interesting bit is that us Villa and Fulham are all on +24 Goal difference.

I didn't realise we could have made history last night by going 5 games undefeated without conceding a goal and just look who scores to ruin our chance of some history, a bloody Jack, fair play tho he was a lively thing that McBurnie.

Fulham's form is unnerving everybody else at the moment. To be honest 90 points would mean 25 out of the their last 30 and should be pretty much beyond them. Wolves need just 17 out of their last 36 so should get there although the nerves must be setting in now. We need 20 out of 33, Villa 24 out of 33.

All very tight but we could really do with Fulham slipping up sooner rather than later and draw between Villa and Wolves on Saturday. Of course we need to keep winning and get the points on the board to give us a little bit of cushion when the fixtures get a little trickier.

This is shaping up to be the best finish to a season in the 45 years I've been going. Why is 99% of the South Wales public so indifferent to what's going on ?

Let's hope it's not down to goal difference as we will lose out? I'm sure our goals scored is far inferior to villa ,wolves and Fulham and we are not going to make it up.

I used to love figuring out this kind of thing and figuring what this win and that win would do. I think this season to many strong teams pushing for the top 2. Hate the saying but i'm literally taking it game by game. Still 33 points to play for, anything could happen
