OT - Dead man's shoes

Postby Wolfpac » Wed May 16, 2018 4:58 pm

Last night watched this film for the first time, it disturbed me, I’ve rewatched it again today, what an absolutely brilliant film, so true to life, Paddy Considine is incredible as per usual, one of the best British actors of our generation, Gary Stretch as Sonny the horrible evil lowlife scumbag drug lord played a brilliant villain and the rest of the goons notably Stuart Wolfenden who played Herbie were a great addition, Toby Kebell who played Anthony for what we saw of him in the film played a real true to life disabled kid who was mocked and tortured by peers he looked upto. Wasn’t expecting the twist at the end when it turns out Anthony was dead all along. Some of the scenes were upsetting, the flash backs when they were all abusing him.

One of those films that will go down in history as a real masterpiece of British cinema.

It's probably my favourite film if I had to pick one. Watched it years ago and it's the only film that I had to watch again immediately after, it's that good.

Paddy Considine co-wrote it with Shane Meadows, the director. You can guarantee anything those two are involved with will be excellent and as a result of this film, I've watched most of their stuff. Warp were the firm behind it and no doubt it's also why the soundtrack is perfect and could stand alone by itself. In 2013, UNKLE did a live 're-score' preformance at the South Bank Centre such is the films deserved cult popularity

PC's latest film is The Journeyman which has already got incredible reviews, I may see if I can track it down tonight. He also plays in a band called 'Riding The Low', very talented chap and comes over as down to earth and genuine.

Always loved 'indie' films and Dead Mans Shoes is up there with the very best.

Have you seen Tyrannosaur. Considine wrote and directed it and.it stars my favourite actor Peter Mullen.

Another great film. Brutal though.

No worries. The This Is England series by Shane Meadows is also excellent. Johnny Owen's other half is one of the actresses and very good she is too. Johnny is very talented too and a massive City fan. Really enjoyed his Svengali and I believe In Miracles films and I think you would too.

Great film up there with Mike Leigh's 1993 cult classic Naked & Gary Oldham's 1997 Nil by Mouth for standing the test of time on a re watch, proper for real, gritty UK underclass, drama time capsules made into film IMO. "Terry" the movie from the 2009 deserves a mention as it went under the radar but was on a similar tip of capturing the lowlifes of those times.

I’m envious of people that just watched it for the the first time.Superb film.Watch it late at night and don’t get up for a pee.Shows the yanks how to make a quality low budget piece with no stupid special effects and no ultra macho invincible lead manYou can taste the fear when Herby says.........”It’s Anthony ‘s brother”...................................

Aye mate you're totally spot on, gonna have a weekend of these type of films.

When Herbie says its Anthonys Brother the look on Tuff & Soz face says it all, the realisation of what they have done shows.

Some great films above but a big mention about”Naked”,
John Thewlis is awesome in this and the film has one of the bleakest and dark undercurrents I ever watched.
Nil by mouth,Kathy Burkes performance is one of the best and Withnail and I,Danny the drugdealer is a f**king legend,”choose your words carefully”,class!
