O/T Brexit Secretary & Foreign Secertary Resign!

Mon Jul 09, 2018 8:15 am

Updated

Dominic Raab has been appointed Brexit secretary by Theresa May after David Davis resigned from the government.

Mr Raab, who is currently housing minister, was a prominent Leave campaigner during the 2016 referendum.

Mr Davis quit late on Sunday night, saying Theresa May had "given away too much too easily".

The 44-year old Mr Raab, a lawyer before becoming an MP in 2010, will now take over day-to-day negotiations with the EU's Michel Barnier.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brexit Secretary David Davis, who has been leading UK negotiations to leave the EU, has resigned from government.

He told the BBC that he was no longer the best person to deliver the PM's Brexit plan - agreed by the cabinet on Friday - as he did not "believe" in it.

He said the "career-ending" decision was a personal one but he felt the UK was "giving away too much and too easily" to the EU in the negotiations.

Mrs May said she did not agree but thanked him for his work.

The resignation is a blow to Mrs May as she seeks to win over Eurosceptic MPs to her proposed Brexit vision.

The UK is due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019 after a referendum was held in 2016, but the two sides have yet to agree how trade will work between the UK and the EU afterwards.

There have been differences within the Conservative Party over how far the UK should prioritise the economy by compromising on issues such as leaving the remit of the European Court of Justice and ending free movement of people.

Mrs May's Conservative Party only has a majority in Parliament with the support in key votes of the 10 MPs from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, so any split raises questions about whether her plan could survive a Commons vote - and has also led to renewed questions about whether she will face a challenge to her position.

Mr Davis said he told the PM at Chequers that he was the "odd man out" in objecting to the plans
In his resignation letter, Mr Davis told Mrs May that "the current trend of policy and tactics" was making it "look less and less likely" that the UK would leave the customs union and single market.

He said he was "unpersuaded" that the government's negotiating approach "will not just lead to further demands for concessions" from Brussels.

Mr Davis, who was appointed Brexit Secretary in 2016, said: "The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one."

In her reply, Mrs May said: "I do not agree with your characterisation of the policy we agreed at cabinet on Friday."

She said she was "sorry" he was leaving but would "like to thank you warmly for everything you have done... to shape our departure from the EU"

The thing about Brexit, whether you voted for it or not, is that there was so little due diligence, whatif scenarios and investigations done before the referendum as to what Brexit would look like that we should never really have had the vote when we did. It was very premature. There should have been at least 3 years investigations as to the ramifications and what likely deals we could strike on the different negotiation items before the vote. Then I feel people would have been better informed. As it happens people voted with very little information (from both sides) which of course opened the door to emotional media manipulation.

Also, even if Brexit is, in the long term, right for the country, we have completely incompetent people trying to strike deals which they are not equipped or skilled to do. Eventually the EU will tell us to just f**k off and make decisions for us.

The conservatives and Labour are completely incompetent.

Let's be frank, it's a clusterfuck.

99.9% of the people who voted for brexit, wanted a stop to immigration nothing else.
No one thought about a soft or hard brexit whatever they means.
Like I said this goes over the heads of most people .
David Davis as done his best to discredit Teresa May , I'm fully expecting a leadership challenge sooner rather than later, and then calls for a second referendum , if a anti brexiter gets to be PM, which will weaken our stance in Europe and turn the country into turmoil, and make us a laughing stock in world politics.
We've done all the running so there's no more turning back, let's get on with it .
We should have had a pro brexiteer as prime minister from the off , not a remainer That's akin to Leighton James managing Cardiff City

These ramifications are all a load of nonsense anyway because nobody can predict these sorts of things, seeing it now with "this is how much worse off we will be in certain scenarios" but it has too many factors attached to it to be believable.

for me the core principle should be, should we be a country who stands on our own but still deals with europe, or should we be involved in a united europe where collective decisions are made for everyone. and then we can just go from there

At the end of the day, nothing will be decided by fanatical Remainders like me or fanatical Leavers on the other side. What we have in common is that we are all idealogues. Nothing is ever decided by ideologues rather the majority in the middle who will make their decision on their perception of how it will impact them.

100% agree. The waffle African Bluebird has come out with is the precise reason why BREXIT is failing. No-one can predict the future and that is why I have paid no attention whatsoever to project fear's WWIII and economic meltdown nonsense.

We are a great country and would survive perfectly well outside the EU. We should be bold enough to say to the EU stick it up your arse if they don't want to give us a free trade agreement.

Davis has been bold lets hope other BREXIT supporters have the same courage.

i didnt vote because i had no idea if it would be good or bad for us and those leading both campaigns didnt seem to know either..was guesses and counter guesses....what is clear is that those that predicted a catastrophe within days of an out vote were way out..if there were another vote, id vote out purely because i believe in democracy.

There wasn't a second vote in 1975 when the UK voted to join the Common Market. There were no referendums on the Maastricht and Lisbon Treaties which altered the structure of the Common Market and created the EU with it's Customs Union, Single Market and Freedoms of movement.

So why should there be a 'second referendum' just so project fear can have another crack at frightening people into changing their minds? BTW I don't believe leavers have changed their minds and quite rightly want the Government to honour the result of the 2016 referendum before there is even any talk of a second referendum.

From what I understand the position of BREXIT minister is purely cosmetic and carries no real power. I think there is a fella called Oliver Robbins who is a civil servant and has all but taken over the roll of negotiating with the EU.

He is also a rabid remain campaigner which explains why in effect the UK is not leaving the EU.

They are clearly briefing against the likes of davies and undermining him at every opportunity which I think he alluded to in his resignation letter.

Personally I think escaping the political union that is the EU is a good thing. I am comfortable with free movement of workers (there is a difference). I just want the people we directly elect to be the people to run our country.

If the margin of the yes win was too small in the eyes of the people campaigning for remain then I suggest we scrap the welsh assembly! tongue in cheek but why was one referendum more valid than another one??

We CAN have a good future outside the EU whilst being a good neighbour and friend to the block. If they bottle it then I am very worried what may happen and I dont think labour would be any better. Corbyn is a quiet but largely lone voice in his own party on the EU - a quiet one because he hasnt come out and said he is anti eu even though historically it would see he is/.

I am FINE with people thinking we are better in. It is a valid opinion. However their argument that we have regular general elections is invalid. Many wish to STOP brexit. We dont stop winning parties taking power. We let it happen then campaign to get them out if we disagree with them. A true democratic position would be to campaign to get us back in after we leave. We need the chance to plot a path outside first.
