Neil Warnocks key talking points

There were plenty of interesting points discussed at Neil Warnock’s press conference, most notably:

His comments on the failed Tammy Abraham loan deal from Chelsea

His comments on Tomlin and Pilkington not wanting to play for other clubs

That hint over whether Cardiff could land Wales sensation Ethan Ampadu on loan

The latest on injuries to Aron Gunnarsson and Josh Murphy

Warnock’s thoughts on the Bluebirds’ current striker situation, especially Bobby Reid and Danny Ward

How Cardiff can cause problems for Maurizio Sarri’s team this weekend

3,000 Cardiff City fans are making the trip to Stamford Bridge :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluescarf:

Warnock on his best strike force right now

NEIL WARNOCK:

“The best strike force is Danny Ward and Bobby Reid at the moment."

“They’ve been improving in training and they’re relishing it. They’ve both stepped up and with Danny it’s been like having a new player with the amount of time he’s been injured."

“Everything’s changing for him. Who would have thought 18 months ago at Rotherham that we’d be scoring and managing against Arsenal."

“And now we’ve got Bobby in the right position, it’s great for him.”

Nei Warnock on injuries

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I’m not aware of anything untoward."
“Murphy is training but whether he’ll be involved on Saturday, I’m not sure.
“He wants to be but with Mendez-Laing out for a long time we’ll have to be careful.”

It is good news for the Bluebirds on the injury front too with both Josh Murphy and Aron Gunnarsson back preparing with the first team squad.

“Josh Murphy is training but I'm not sure whether he’ll be involved. He wants to be but we have to be careful with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing out.

“We haven’t got to rush Aron back. He could be involved at the weekend if I wanted him to, but I’m not sure I want him to.

“We’ve got to build that knee up.”

Neil Warnock on training ground disputes / Two Cardiff players fighting

“I had two players trying to kill themselves the other day!"

“I’m sure there’s lessons to be learned for everyone. Roy is Roy and when I got the sack at Sheffield United the only guy that spoke to me was Roy Keane."

“I thought that was a bit of class. I’m sure Roy will deal with this situation in the cold light of day.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Warnock on Sarri

“He’s like a breath of fresh air. It’s obvious they’re going on the front foot and they’re enjoying it."

“They’re on top so much of the time that other teams don’t get a chance. I wish I had his players!”

Warnock on Eden Hazard

“I said to Gunnars ‘why didn’t you get the other lads to kick him!’ it would have been so much easier."

“My favourite player is David Silva but Hazard excites me. I would pay to watch him. He epitomises everything about the game."

“I think he’s got everything in his locker. I don’t think we’ll get near him but we’ll do the best we can!”

Neil Warnock on Chelsea

“Sometimes you can say you’re gonna go for it, but you’ve got 10 men behind the ball."
“The top sides always have a lot of possession so we’re gonna be under the cosh for a long time, but we’ve got to find a remedy and we’ve earned the right to play the Chelseas of this world.
“We’ve been working on how to score goals. But it’s not going to be Chelsea or Man City that define our season.
“But I don’t want to go there and not have a shot on target, we’ve got to have players at their best abilities to give them a game.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Is the lack of win a concern?

“You’ll probably have to keep asking me that, looking at the fixtures!”

Warnock on Joe Ralls

NEIL WARNOCK:

“The only thing he’s been doing is taking free kicks for the last two weeks!"

“But the other two lads who have come in have really helped him. We’ve improved that department and Joe is relishing it."

“I wasn’t sure he can do the anchor role but he’s fitted in and revelled in it.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

'10 points wouldn't flatter us'

“Could have been so much better, we’re learning all the time and improving - and three out of the four games we could have done."

“It wouldn’t have flattered us to have 10 points at this stage. But it’s something we’ll have to brush up on. We’re disappointed we haven’t got 8, 9 or 10 points.
“I don’t like answering questions to you guys knowing we should have done better.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Neil Warnock on the up and coming fixture schedule

“It’s not a worry but I suppose everyone worries - chairmen, fans, players, managers!"

“But we’ve got enough good players to get points off people we’re supposed to get points off. We’ve got to use these 2 games to learn."

“Quite simply if we’d been ruthless against Arsenal we would have won the game.
“It’ll be interesting to see how we cope at a packed Stamford Bridge. It’s one where we’ve got to get the best out of what we’ve got.”

Neil Warnock on Chelsea under Sarri

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I just think they’ve gone a bit more attacking, it must be more enjoyable for the lads to play like that.
You can say they might be more vulnerable at the back but a team like Chelsea has so much possession that it doesn’t get noticed."

“The lads look like they’re enjoying it. Hazard — if he’s not the best wide man in the league, then I don’t know who is! My favourite player in the league is David Silva, who we’ve got next week, but Hazard comes very close because he can win a game in two seconds.”

Two up front a risk?

NEIL WARNOCK:

“It depends how you look at it. If you look at the stats, Bobby (Reid) covers every blade of grass, 12k or whatever it is that he’s running."

“And he’s such an enthusiastic boy, we love him in training and I think him and Danny are a great partnership."

“Danny has got goals in his locker too. At the moment, it’s a no-brainer and whether we can get away with that, I’ll know in the next two weeks.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Positives from Arsenal

“I can’t keep saying ‘I want to enjoy it’ because I’ve been told to stop saying that.

“But the lads have responded and the football is far more enjoyable to watch."

“The fans have been very tolerant and I like it as there’s lots more to talk about. Even if we lose a lot of games, we’ve got to be positive and we won’t stay up if we don’t score goals.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

A change in style?

“Football does evolve and you have to realise you’ve got to keep the ball in the Premier League."

“Your strikers are so important to that and then you look at other threats. Junior is looking good, Victor is flying and Harry."

“The disappointments against Arsenal was the goals we conceded. If you make the same mistakes in the Premier League, you get punished.”

Those Neil Warnock quotes on Hazard and Willian

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I was hoping Barcelona bought Willian and Hazard went to Real Madrid in the summer,” he told the Standard.
They are such great players. Hazard? People try and kick him but he just loves it, he wants to play. I love his attitude.'

"I can understand why Chelsea didn’t let him go. He’s a massive part of what they’re trying to do."

“How do you stop him? Goodness knows. I was hoping Iceland were going to take chunks out of him when he played for Belgium the other night.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Warnock on the Arter/Keane situation

“I spoke to him early doors about the situation and my advice to him was to say nothing and get on with your football. He loves his country and wants to play for them and I’m sure that will be resolved."

“We have enough problems and from a selfish point of view I was quite glad Harry didn’t go away during the international break.
“I think Martin will make sure that’s sorted."

“The one thing you can’t complain with Harry is training, he does too much and we have to curb him in training sometimes!”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Neil Warnock on Wales youngster Ampadu

“I think they should loan us him! The same with Tammy Abraham."

“They’ve got good players and it would help their development."

“He plays the game simple but will have to quicken up a little bit when he gets higher up, but he’ll get that by playing games.
“But I thought he was outstanding in that first game and a little bit overpowered in the second one."

“He should (go out on loan). Managers now have got such a short timescale in your job that you can’t really worry about kids. And when you can just pay £50 million for somebody and leave a kid out… you’re going to do that.
“The top clubs want the ready-made players because that’s what they can afford. So you need to get lads playing games at the highest possible level.
“I think he’s ready to play in the Premier League, as I thought Tammy was.
“We would have the lad and I will be speaking to someone at Chelsea about a one or two things. He’s so confident. These young lads nowadays have got no fear.
“He’s not dissimilar to a Ray Wilkins type. He keeps everything moving, a bit like Joe Allen - we’d have loved to have him - so there’s a number of people he reminds me of.”

Warnock on the Tammy Abraham saga

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I talked to Eddie Newton, who is in charge of their loan deals. I was told I’d be kept in touch and unfortunately I wasn’t.
“I thought the least you should get at this level is a telephone call."

“But I wanted Tammy, I thought he could spearhead our challenge and fit the way we play, but it wasn’t to be and now Villa have got the rewards of him."

“The only thing I can think of is that our deadline is two or three weeks earlier and they might have been thinking of using him in their own squad."
“But surely playing 20 to 30 times in the Premier League would have improved him - no disrespect to the Championship - I thought it would have been a no brainer.”

Neil Warnock on Gunnarsson

NEIL WARNOCK:

“We haven’t got to rush Gunnarsson back because we’ll need him for Arter’s suspension!"

“He could be involved at the weekend if I wanted him to, but I’m not sure I want him to."

“We’ve got to build that knee up and he’s getting game time, like yesterday he trained fully with us and played in a game. We’ll have to let the leash off at some point, I know that."

“You get what you see with Gunnars, obviously we’ve stepped up a level now so no one knows (if Gunnarsson will step up).”

Neil Warnock on Pilkington and Tomlin

“They’re playing at Coventry today with the Under-23s."

“They had options to go into the Championship but they turned them down, even though they can't play for my first team"

“I’ve had no hassle with them but I was surprised they didn’t want to go.”

Neil Warnock: We've got to be at our best

CARDIFF CITY FC

Friday 14th September 2018

Neil Warnock spoke to the assembled press and media on Friday, September 14th, at the Vale Resort – previewing Cardiff City’s away match at Chelsea.

The Gaffer gave us his thoughts on the new manager in charge at Stamford Bridge – and the tough trip ahead.

“He’s (Maurizio Sarri) like a breath of fresh air. It’s obvious they’re on the front foot and they’re enjoying it. They’re on top so much of the time that other teams don’t get a chance.

“We’ve got enough good players to get points off people we’re supposed to get points off. We’ve got to use these next two games (Chelsea and Manchester City) to learn.

“The top sides always have a lot of possession so we’re going to be under the cosh for a long time, but we’ve got to find a remedy. We’ve earned the right to play against teams like Chelsea.

“It’ll be interesting to see how we cope at a packed Stamford Bridge. It’s one where we’ve got to get the best out of what we’ve got. I don’t want to go there and not have a shot on target, but we’ve got to have players at their best abilities to give them a game.”

The Bluebirds were unfortunate to taste defeat last time out against Arsenal. Forward Danny Ward netted his first goal of the campaign against the Gunners on that day

“Our best strike force at the moment is Danny Ward and Bobby Reid,” Neil continued. “They’ve been improving in training and they’re relishing it. They’ve both stepped up. With Danny, it has been like having a new player with the amount of time he has been injured.

“If you look at the stats, Bobby covers every blade of grass. He’s such an enthusiastic boy. We love him in training and I think him and Danny are a great partnership.

“Everything’s changing for Danny and now we’ve got Bobby in the right position - it’s great for him.

“Danny has got goals in his locker too. At the moment, it’s a no-brainer.”

Nei Warnock on Cardiff City injuries

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I’m not aware of anything untoward."

“Murphy is training but whether he’ll be involved on Saturday, I’m not sure.
“He wants to be but with Mendez-Laing out for a long time we’ll have to be careful.”
