The land lady

She said there was "pushing and shoving" and she again told the men to leave.

Questioned about what she saw, she said: "From the corner of my eye, it looked like punches were being thrown."

Ms Healey said she went outside after the men left the bar and saw them getting on to a minibus, which was parked on the corner.

She watched the minibus drive away.

Describing the aftermath, she said: "There were smashed plastics, smashed bottles of beer, spilled."

She added: "There was an old guy who was injured. He had a cut to the back of his head, a bloodshot eye and a cut to his face.

"There was a younger guy with injuries. He had a cut to his head as well."

She said the police arrived and she closed the pub early, at around 9pm, having been standing in for her boss and on duty with another female staff member.

Asked how she felt, she replied: "Obviously upset and a bit shaken and angry."

My only thoughts on this subject centre around the typical blinkered attitude that this board holds in abundance. The Villa fans are deemed cowards and scum yet their Cardiff counterparts are being heralded angels and heroes of Rourkes Drift proportions. It’s pathetic and silly but sadly all too predictable on here.

attacking pubs at 7pm on Saturdays....and have a rep for being best in country at it ...um . not football .
ill guess Karaoke hooligans..?

I wasn't going to comment but f**k it

I knocked Football Violence on the head apart from one isolated incident almost 10 years ago. Imagine going to jail for fighting at the Football as a grown man in your 40's or 50's

The Cornwall has never been a 'lads' Pub, in all the years I went we never used the Cornwall as one of 'our pubs'. Sure some lads drink in there but its a mixed pub with just as many normal fans drinking in there as anyone else.

I know the Cardiff lad who was acquitted, he is a good bloke, certainly not a Muppet, got a good head on his shoulders.

Some of the things AV3 seems to wan't to avoid you simply can't, before the game the place would have been packed out, and similarly after the game. Cardiff also know that the place is packed out with CCTV inside and out.

It smacks of the Villa lot being pissed/drugged up, hanging around drinking elsewhere and then thinking lets see what we can find before going home. I find it unbelievable that Cardiff would have told them to go there when there are streets upon streets and back lanes all in the vicinity where they could have had it off and nobody would have batted an eyelid.

It's a known fact that hooligans are moving away from football and targeting other lesser sports.Looks like the villa lot might struggle against a mob of lawn bowls members!! :bluebird:

As one of the most objective and sensible posters on here, I will try to give you an explanation that your post deserves.

Firstly, I have no real opinion on the incident. I don’t understand why anyone would want to behave like that. The fact that it was such a small number out of over 4500 away fans there that day should put things into perspective.

Secondly, it is important to remember that all 5 people have plead not guilty and as such should be given the benefit of the doubt at this stage, rather than the kangaroo court that has existed on here towards the 3 Villa lads.

I know quite a few of those involved. That doesn’t mean that I socialise with them or that I do what they do. However, I have known most of them for a very long time and in that time, I have never heard of them attacking innocents or random pubs. As you have read, one Cardiff lad has admitted that he was outside the pub as Villa approached and that he launched a bottle at them. That doesn’t sound like a random pub to me.

My only observations are that (as usual on here) the rose tinted glasses portray one rule for Cardiff and one for everyone else.

Silly suggestions that the 20 should have taken on 100 plus at 2 or 6 o’clock are laughable likewise that the 20 are cowards for not doing so. Annis appears to be on a one man crusade to ensure that any Cardiff are innocent little angels and that the Villa are the bad guys. He claims that “Common sense should prevail “. Yet displays little himself. The Cardiff could have been firing a machine gun and Annis would still have been banging on about self defence. The truth is, his only care is that no Cardiff get sentenced, regardless of what they did that day. It is typical of the double standards that exist.

IMO, you either condem everyone who broke the law that day or you hope that everyone gets off. You can’t cherry pick, depending on what team a person was “representing “.

Simple fact is, any away fan who’d just gone to watch the football would have been back home by the time this incident occurred.

I’ve run coaches away for the last 10 years and have never ever thought of staying in the town for 2 hours after and then taking the bus to a local pub after.

It’s ridiculous.

All old enough to know better too.

Dozens of lives ruined now. Wives, mothers , fathers, kids, friends, colleagues all going through hell... And for what ?
Does anyone think they are brave or clever any more ?

If they want to prove themselves they should get their boots on and get on the pitch and play the game or get some gloves and go down the gym.

He is judging Annis for "defending Cardiff fans" yet is doing the exact same for these Villa fans.

His condensending posts over the last year have become more and more prolific. I'm putting it down to the fact his beloved team have failed miserable and it looks like that is going to continue. Oh how and mighty fall hey. Adding to that he most likely thinks its stil coming home.

You don’t seriously think I’m bothered about what a semi literate buffoon like you thinks do you?

If I don’t get a nibble off fighting Steven twice a day or a “troll “ reference from the serial misunderstander once a week, then I begin to worry that they’ve fallen out with me. Now that is cause for concern.

There's always 2 sides to a story and I don't blame you for sticking up for your side I wouldn't expect anything else, the truth is only those on both sides who were involved know the truth but you have to understand that from 'our side' looking in the reasons we would come to the conclusions we have.

I'm not sure who is representing your lads but they must have the worst law firm on their side in history, on what planet anyone has advised them to go not guilty (other than the lads who's denying its him) is beyond me when they are on CCTV attacking a pub, its crazy, they would have been better off taking the credit they would have got from a guilty plea surely?

The only person who appears to be bang to rights is the one who left the pub, launched a bottle and then kicked someone who was on the floor.

Neither of the 2 Villa lads appears to have any cctv evidence against them so I don’t blame them, given what is at stake. It is for a jury to decide whether their actions constitute to being involved/encouraging others etc. A lawyer obviously acts on instructions and will proceed as a client wants him to.

Going on the press report of what happened it is my opinion that the two City fans who left the pub to confront the Villa fans will be found guilty. There is not one law for Joe Public and one for football fans all who are charged with violent disorder are subject to the same tests.

By leaving the pub, throwing glasses and gesturing towards the Villa fans those City fans have lost the argument of self-defence.

However, the City fans who stayed in the pub and tried to lock the doors but were out flanked by Villa fans will certainly have a strong argument of self-defence and indeed I agree they really shouldn't have been charged in the first place.

AV3 is right about the two City fans who left the pub.

However, I don't agree that there is no CCTV evidence against the Villa fans. CCTV puts them at the scene and it is obvious that there was an intention of violent disorder. Even if some fans are not actually taking part in the violence there is strong evidence via the CCTV that they helped aided and encouraged those who did.

No he is not fella hence why the 2 said lads have gone NOT GUILTY,it will all depend on the jurys interpretation of if it was violent disorder....,the villa lot are bang to rights gone out their way to go to said pub and all are captured on cctv so cant see why they'd go not guilty baffles me but each to their own, while i hope all get off think the 2 cardiff that left the pub are open to a guilty as it may not be self defence as tgey left the premises all depends on the jury obviously

The law according to Fighting Steven QC.

Perhaps the jury will interpret it as a re-enactment of the Mad Hatters Tea Party?

If ever there was a case of a need for someone to keep his big mouth shut for once, it is here and now with this absolute weapon.

Football fan 'saw big man trying to smash bottle over someone's head' during post-match pub brawl

Court Reporter

Birmingham live / Media Wales

Tuesday 2nd October 2018

A football fan accused of being part of “huge disorder” in a Cardiff pub following a match told a court he took “necessary” action.

Five men are on trial following a post-game brawl at The Cornwall pub in Grangetown following the Championship clash between Cardiff City and Aston Villa on August 12 last year.

Cardiff City supporters Nathan Pleace and Vincent Richards, along with Aston Villa supporters Mark Baker, Gary Tucker and Brett Clarke all deny violent disorder and are on trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

On Tuesday three of the defendants gave evidence in their own defence.

Bluebirds fan Pleace, 30, of Andrew’s Road, in Llandaff North, told the jury he and a few friends were heading to the city centre through Grangetown after the match and headed towards The Cornwall.

He said had consumed four of five pints of lager.

CCTV played in court showed him standing outside the pub when a bottle smashed nearby.

He said: “I thought it was a commotion between locals but when I heard their accent I knew they weren’t from here.

“The first thing I saw was a big man with a bottle physically trying to smash a bottle over someone’s head. I didn’t want the man coming any closer to us.”

Nathan Pleace (Image: Wales News Service)
The footage shows Pleace throwing a plastic glass at the men during what he described as “huge disorder”.

The CCTV also showed him kicking out at a man on the floor and appearing to throw a punch, which he described as a shove, to a man on the floor.

He described the men as “agitated” and said they were calling people for a fight.

Asked what was going through his head, he said: “You haven’t got time to think – it was just one of those moments.”

He then picked up a chair from the pub which he said was a natural reaction. Pleace said he thought the group’s intentions were to cause serious harm to people in and out of the pub.

He added: “I thought everything I was doing on that day was necessary.”

Fellow defendant Tucker, 51, of Holly Lane in Birmingham, said he and other Villa fans left the Cardiff City Stadium when Aston Villa were losing at half-time. He said they went on a “pub crawl” and went to several pubs around Cardiff.

The court heard how the men said they were going to stop off at the first off licence they saw.

The bus of around 20 to 30 fans stopped outside Millennium Fish & Chips in Cornwall Street, opposite The Cownwall.

Tucker told the court he was on the bus when he heard someone shout “pub, pub” and they made their way towards the pub. CCTV was shown to the jury of the bus arriving.

Giving evidence Tucker said he didn’t enter the pub but he threw an object – believed to be a plastic pint glass – out of “frustration” and felt it was “necessary”.

He said it was in the heat of the moment but wasn’t sure why he had thrown an object.

When Tucker was arrested he declined legal advice and gave a no comment interview until he had spoken with a solicitor he knew.

Baker, 47, of Ashburton Road in Birmingham, was dressed in a white T-shirt and blue shorts on the footage and said he stood out like a “sore thumb”.

He told the court if he was coming for violence he would have dressed differently.

CCTV showed Baker throwing a can down the street, which he said wasn’t intended to hit anyone.

He also told the jury their behaviour was “childish” and they acted like a “bunch of lads”.

After heading back to the bus the court heard Baker returned to the pub. He said he heard someone was “trapped inside” and went to try and help.

When he was arrested he declined to have free independent legal advice, claiming the solicitors could have been “useless”.

Clarke, 40 of Winchester Drive in Solihull, also involved in the case, chose not to give evidence.

Richards, 32, of Leckwith Road in Llandough, is due to begin his defence on Wednesday.

All of the defendants deny violent disorder.

The trial continues.
