'Gary Madine's done some daft things in the past' - Sheffield United boss

Friday 11th January 2019

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says what Gary Madine has done in joining the club has got “to be admired and supported”.

It was announced this week that the former Bolton striker will move on loan from Cardiff City to Bramall Lane until the end of the season after a goalless 12 months in the Welsh capital.

The move means 28-year-old Madine joins up with the fierce rivals of his former club Sheffield Wednesday, who he played for between 2011 and 2015 before a move to Bolton Wanderers.

Wilder has given him his backing, and says Madine “could have taken the easy way out and joined another club”.

The Yorkshire Post report Wilder said:

“I’ve made the decision, and it’s my decision. I understand it might not be backed fully, but people must look at the bigger picture with what we’re trying to achieve, and Gary helps that."

“He’s had a couple of promotions with Cardiff and Bolton and adds to our forward line, gives us something different in the second part of the season and will play a part in us improving, going forward."

“Gary wanted to come. He had the b**** to do it, he could have taken the easy way out and joined another club."

“That’s got to be admired and supported. I think the majority of our punters are really fair and understand that what’s gone off in the past, he’s played at the other side of the city, he’s done some daft things in the past."

“But to want to come to the football club and play, he gets my support, and I’d like to think the majority of our support."
“We have to trust that Gary is going to be good for the football club. There are five or six clubs in this division who would have taken him, two or three in and around us.”

Footballer Gary Madine, from Gateshead, had vowed he would "never let anyone down again" after violent attacks

7 APR 2014

Shamed Tyneside soccer star Gary Madine has been caught on camera hurling vile abuse at workmen, just weeks after leaving prison.

The Gateshead-born player vowed in the Chronicle that he would never get in trouble again, after being jailed for 18-months for a double assault.

But just five-weeks after being released early, the Sheffield Wednesday star was filmed launching a foulmouthed tirade at road workers.

Madine, who earns £5,000 a week, shared footage of him hurtling past labourers in his £100,000 Mercedes. And he is heard yelling “Silly *****! Get some work done, yer ********!”

Madine was released from jail five months into an 18-month sentence for assaulting fans in separate nightclub attacks.

Speaking of his shame from his prison cell to the Chronicle, the 23-year-old Championship player, said: ““After this I’m never going to get in trouble again.”

But his latest behaviour is likely to infuriate the bosses who have stood by him.

Madine, who is currently on loan with League One side Carlisle, launched his rant while driving with a friend. He was so pleased with his antics that he uploaded footage to the Snapchat messaging app for pals to see.

One 27-second clip appears to show the striker’s foot over the accelerator as he says: “Let’s see what this button does.”

The footballer is filmed driving in the outside lane of a dual carriageway, overtaking a lorry as dance music blasts. He appears to floor the pedal and the camera moves to the dashboard to show the speedometer and rev-counter needles rising. He appears to hit 110mph but insists he never broke the speed limit.

This weekend Madine scored the winner in Carlisle’s 1-0 victory over Swindon Town. He was pictured hugging his manager and appeared to be wearing an electronic tag on his ankle.

Sheffield Wednesday Chairman Milan Mandaric vowed to stand-by his player following his release.

Six weeks ago he said: “Gary is remorseful.”

Madine tweeted on the day he was freed: “I’m sorry for letting so many people down.”

A court heard he knocked Sheffield Wednesday fan Daniel Beresford unconscious and broke his nose, and four weeks later left Sheffield United supporter Reece Hall with a fractured jaw and cheek. His barrister Alison Dorrell said he had thrown away his talent due to “drink, childish behaviour and a temper problem”.

Madine has been loaned to relegation threatened League One side Carlisle United until the end of the season.

So all the abuse he’s had seems justified now.

What an arrogant bell end, noticed the shit house had to shout it from a moving car and not on foot where he’d probably get that greasy perm stood.

Hope he don’t come back to us gets an injury an ends up having to be a labourer the prick.

He's just an overgrown Inbetweeners Bus Wanker at heart.
How on earth City didn't do enough due diligence on him before they signed him smacks of desperation.
People are allowed to change and learn from their mistakes, but he seems to be an accident waiting to happen. At least he's someone else accident and embarrassment now.

He never really has a chance this season and thought maybe him and Reid upfront could of been successful, warnock is to defensive sometimes putting one upfront
