Hull City close to signing Cardiff City defender Matthew Connolly
By Philip Buckingham

Friday 11th January 2019

Nigel Adkins expects to conclude a loan deal for the centre-back on Monday

Hull City are close to landing Cardiff City defender Matthew Connolly on loan for the remainder of the season.

Head coach Nigel Adkins admitted yesterday that a deal had been struck to sign a Premier League centre-back and it is understood the target in City’s sights is Connolly.

The 31-year-old has been told he can leave Cardiff this month ahead of his contract expiring in the summer and the centre-back is known to be keen on sealing a move to the KCOM Stadium next week.

Connolly already has four promotions out of the Championship on his CV following spells with QPR, Reading, Watford and Cardiff and will be considered to be a direct replacement for Tommy Elphick, who was recalled by Aston Villa ahead of the transfer window opening.

The last 18 months have largely seen Connolly serving as defensive back-up for Neil Warnock and his only appearance this season came in the EFL Cup defeat at home to Norwich in August.

Connolly was an unused sub away to Liverpool in October but he missed last weekend’s FA Cup loss at Gillingham with a virus.

Adkins expects to conclude the capture of Connolly on Monday and then turn his attentions to landing a new winger and centre forward ahead of the January 31 deadline.

City host Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow hoping to narrow the seven-point deficit on the Championship’s top six.

I agree and the timing is right! :thumbright:

Matthew Connolly a good professional and served the club well when called upon

I wish him all the very best :ayatollah:

Also good to see Greg Halford looking like he's going to get a contract at Luton (the football club not the airport) ;)

And us. We need to free up the wage bill. Tomlin, Madine, Connolly and Pilkington leaving is for the best though personally I would have liked for Pilks to have been given more of a chance.

good luck to him, Hull are doing good so far this season and you never know... with a good run you can get into the mix in the top 6. good move and he would be happy to see former Cardiff players David Marshall and Fraizer Campbell at the club. :ayatollah:

still no idea why we are loaning out players when we should sell them, is tan planning to not do too much in the summer and so he wants to keep players like Connolly and Tomlin just in case :?

Good move for him and Hull City. He's an experienced pro and is comfortable playing out from the back which Hull and Nigel Adkins like to do. Been an excellent pro and was a key player in us getting promoted the first time and was one of our better players during the OGS and Slade era in the championship. Good luck to him.

the only club interested in Tomlin were a skint lge 1 team who can only afford a quarter of his wages..so who do you sell him to .?

Actually gutted he hasn't played for us this season thought. Always thought he was a decent defender and in my humble Opinion could do a job for us in defence this season. Anyhow best of luck to him. :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

well it does free up a place in the 25 man squad ,and had we signed Clynne and Sala it would probably have been Connolly missing out so I assume we are still looking at bringing 2 in. ?
