What Jamie Carragher said about Cardiff City, Newcastle United and the four teams battling to stay up

Tuesday 12th February 2019

Jamie Carragher believes Cardiff City have given themselves "a great chance" of staying in the Premier League after showing spirit and character in adversity.

The former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit did, however, name the Bluebirds as one of four teams in danger of the drop — along with Newcastle United, Southampton and Brighton.

He predicted Burnley and Crystal Palace will be safe, with Huddersfield and Fulham "already gone".

Speaking on Sky's Monday Night Football show — before Newcastle conceded a late Willy Boly equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Wolves in a result that affects the relegation battle — Carragher waxed lyrical about the Bluebirds.

He also paid tribute, as other pundits have done , to Neil Warnock.

"What they’ve been through, the tragic circumstances, to get the results they have got in the past two games is testament to their character," he said.

"Forget ability, (it is) spirit and character, you see the scenes with the crowd, what Neil Warnock has said and how he's conducted himself in the past few weeks.

"The raw emotion coming from the manager to the supporters.

"You always look at the top six, their head-to-head... Cardiff’s results against the teams around them give them a great chance of staying up."

On Newcastle, managed by his former Liverpool mentor Rafa Benitez, Carragher said they were in trouble, though that was before their draw at Molineux

Cardiff leapfrogged the Magpies with their 2-1 win at Southampton on Saturday, although Benitez's men went back above the Bluebirds on goal difference after their Monday night game. Both sides are on 25 points.

Carragher added: "The position (Newcastle) are in: they’ve got exactly the same number of points in the last two Premier League seasons.

"One season they’ve gone up to tenth, a couple of seasons before they got relegated which shows it can go either way.

“What they will believe is that they’ve got a few tough fixtures out of the way – and one of them they won. I always believe that Rafa Benitez will produce results against the odds because of the quality of manager he is.

“I don’t believe they’ll go down but if you’re asking me do I think Burnley or Palace will go down? No.

"So it comes down to Brighton, Southampton, Cardiff and Newcastle for one place. Fulham and Huddersfield I think are already gone.”

I get the feeling Newcastle will be safe. The bottom 3 at the moment are my bet to be the ones going down but a dark horse could be Brighton who could be one of those sides who appear safe but implode on the run in.
