About Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, commonly referred to as Brighton, is a professional football club from Brighton where they play in the edge of the city in Falmer, England. They compete in the Premier League, the top tier of the English football league system. Brighton's home ground is the 30,750-capacity Falmer Stadium.

Founded in 1901, and nicknamed the "Seagulls" or "Albion", Brighton played their early professional football in the Southern League, before being elected to the Football League in 1920. The club enjoyed greatest prominence between 1979 and 1983 when they played in the First Division and reached the 1983 FA Cup Final, losing to Manchester United after a replay. They were relegated from the First Division in the same season.

By the late 1990s, Brighton had slipped to the fourth tier of English football and were in financial trouble. After narrowly avoiding relegation from the Football League to the Conference in 1997, a boardroom takeover saved the club from liquidation. Successive promotions in 2001 and 2002 brought Brighton back to the second tier, and in 2011, the club moved into the Falmer Stadium after 14 years without a permanent home ground. In the 2016–17 season, Brighton finished second in the EFL Championship and were thus promoted to the Premier League, ending a 34-year absence from the top flight.

Previous Meeting

We came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 in November. Sol Bamba got the injury time winner after Callum Paterson had cancelled out Lewis Dunk’s opener. Dale Stephens was sent off for the visitors.

I just read that Knockaert had a red card yesterday which means he misses the game with us.
One of their best players imo.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton on the 5-0 loss to Bournemouth: "(The) players have reacted well. We had a meeting yesterday, went through the game and the goals that we conceded.

"It was probably our worst performance of the season but this is football.

"There isn't one player in that changing room that wouldn't have gone through a bad defeat, a bad performance, and what it's always about is how you respond to that.

"I expect very much a reaction from our players."

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock: "We just have to look at the golf and at what Tiger has done - amazing.

"Nobody gave him a chance either, he has been written off that many times.

"Obviously over the last few weeks we have felt sorry for ourselves a few times. We haven't got time to do that and if it's not good enough then we accept it.

"But this is an opportunity to give ourselves a chance until the end of the season. We have to grab that."

"We believe we can still do it and so do our fans."

NW stated victor has not been at the races the last few games, tend to agree, so I would play Reid in place of him.
Otherwise I would stick with the same team.

Who's the referee?

Andre Marriner will take charge of proceedings on the south coast. It will be the third time this season he has taken charge of a Cardiff match, having previously overseen the Bluebirds' home and away games with Wolves.

Match facts: Brighton v Cardiff City

Brighton have only lost one of their last nine home league games against Cardiff (W3 D5), and are unbeaten in five (W1 D4) since a 1-2 defeat in the Championship in October 2005.

Cardiff haven’t done a league double over Brighton since the 1998-99 fourth tier campaign; they won 2-1 in the reverse meeting in November.

Brighton are unbeaten at home to newly promoted clubs in the Premier League (P4 W2 D2 L0), and have only lost two of their 15 previous top-flight matches overall against such opposition on home soil (W7 D6 L2).

Brighton have lost consecutive home Premier League games for the very first time. They last lost three in a row at home in league competition in January 2016.

Cardiff have lost six of their last seven Premier League games (W1), and five of their last six away from home. Indeed, each of the Bluebirds’ last three Premier League away games have ended in a 0-2 defeat.

Only already relegated Fulham (6) and Huddersfield (4) have won fewer Premier League points in 2019 than Brighton (8).

50% of Cardiff’s away wins in the Premier League have come on the south coast (2/4), beating Southampton in both 2013-14 and this campaign.

This will be the seventh managerial league meeting between Brighton’s Chris Hughton and Cardiff’s Neil Warnock; Hughton has seen his sides keep a clean sheet in five of the previous six (W4 D1 L1), but lost this season’s reverse fixture 2-1 in November.

Brighton striker Glenn Murray has failed to score in seven of his eight league matches against Cardiff City. However, the one game he did find the net was his last such appearance at home against the Bluebirds, scoring a hat-trick for Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Championship in September 2012.

Brighton’s Glenn Murray has failed to score in his last nine Premier League home games. Despite this, he’s still scored five more league goals at the Amex Stadium this season than any other Brighton player (7).

What's the team news?

Brighton could well be boosted by the return of duo Pascal Gross and Solly March for the visit of the Bluebirds.

A hamstring injury has kept Gross out since February 26, while March has sat out of the last two matches with a calf injury.

Anthony Knockaert's red card in Saturday's heavy defeat to Brighton means he's suspended.

Cardiff have no new injury concerns, with Callum Paterson and Sol Bamba both long-term absentees.

Matthew Connolly (ankle) and Jazz Richards (hamstring) are both out.

Brighton penalty shout

A freekick midway inside the Cardiff half is delivered deep into the box towards Dunk, who goes down.

He thinks he should have a penalty but Andre Marriner isn’t interested.

Murray wins a freekick

He’s brough down by Hoilett on the right hand side. The freekick is whipped in, but Cardiff clear their lines. The hosts are asking all the questions at the moment, but haven’t fashioned anything too clear cut as of yet.

Brilliant from Gunnarsson

He chases down March, wins the ball and shields it brilliantly from the Brighton man in the corner, who in frustration shoves the Icelander to the floor. Freekick and a chance to regroup.

Stephens wins a corner by seeing his drilled shot on the edge of the box deflected behind. The corner comes to nothing and Cardiff survive.
