Updated " Champions League Final at Wembley or Portugal "

Postby Forever Blue » Sun May 09, 2021 7:24 am

UEFA are now suggesting Lisbon or Porto as a potential venue for the Champions League Final between Chelsea and Manchester City.

But they will allow it to be played at Wembley if the UK Government meet their demands.

Chelsea and Manchester City have both told UEFA that they want the game to be played at Wembley.

UEFA want each set of clubs to have at least 4,000 fans in attendance. The UK Government haven't agreed to that so far.

Portugal is on the green list of travel restrictions so fans would be able to attend. It would also mean that players wouldn't have to quarantine on return and minimising disruption to Euro 2020 preparations, as they would if the match was played in the original host city of Istanbul.

Updated

The UEFA Champions League Final will take place at Wembley Stadium instead of on Istanbul, according to multiple media sources.

The game will take place on the evening of Saturday 29th May.

The EFL Championship, League One and League Two play-offs are due to be played that same weekend. They will now either be moved to a different date or a different neutral stadium.

The problem they have is that Wembley is hosting the Championship play-off final that day. League One and League Two play-off finals there on the Sunday and Monday as well. There will be fans at all three play-off finals and the Champions League Final.

That makes it logistically impossible for the Champions League Final to be played there over that weekend, and neither UEFA or the EFL will move those dates.

The clubs are happy to play it at Old Trafford, Villa Park, Hampden or Millennium Stadium.

But UEFA have said if it's going to be played in the UK, it has to be at Wembley.

Why the insistence on wembley? Seems a bit odd, perhaps wanting bigger spacing? Or gettinv backhanders from the FA?

I heard that Villa Park and the Leicester stadium have been ruled out as viable venues. With Wembley off the table cause of the play offs it would be nice to see it come back to the Millennium Stadium.

Whether UEFA are sticking with their usual qualifying criteria or not I'm not sure, but I know some requirements are a minimum of 50,000 seats as well as a minimum distance between pitch lines and seats.

I think it will be a disgrace if the finalists of the Championship, League One and League Two play-offs will no longer have their finals at Wembley.

Surely they have to be moved to a few days later instead. Can always play them on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday instead of the Saturday, Sunday and Monday. That would mean they'd only have to move the Championship final.

I have to agree, a shame if they miss out on their Wembley appearance, and easy to resolve in truth. :old: :bluebird:

Me neither.

Usually it has to have certain facilities for guests, journalists etc but surely that doesn’t matter so much in a pandemic.

Grounds have to fulfill certain criteria to hold final...if remember mill stdm took years before they classed it as "A" rated because media facities and hotels didn't meet standards set by UEFA hence villa park or Leicester fall short of whats required to hold this game.

More misleading and inaccurate subject headers.

Now appears that it may be POSSIBLY moved to Lisbon.

What's wrong with Old Trafford, Hampden or Millennium though?

Old Trafford has hosted countless Champions League games, Millennium has hosted a previous Champions League Final and Hampden is hosting games at the Euros.

Ned nothing wrong with any of them but you know UEFA? Hosting a final is different from hosting taunement games for reasons I've said? So only millennium fulfill their requirements obsurd as it sounds they stick to criteria come what may.... but being reported Portugal interested in staging it as on UK's green list... so avoiding travel problems for fans... it also as something to do with sponsorship surprise surprise :o

Fair points.

Makes far more sense for them to use Millennium then, much closer obviously than Lisbon.

Nobody can second guess UEFA though.

Millennium has more problems than Wembley namely drakeford and his going slowly backwards lifting of covid rules... thats what is hampering Wembley boris agreeing to UEFAs conditions of lifting lockdown rules.

Drakeford isn’t going backwards on lifting he’s doing pretty well with it I think.

How is it not misleading to say the 'Champions League Final to be played at Wembley; when that has never been the case, it has been mooted but never declared as the final venue.

2 Todays news is that Lisbon is being discussed, as previous reports were that London was being put forward, my point being that it was never declared as the Final WILL be played at Wembley as the misleading subject title.

My post also said that it is according to "multiple media outlets" - that is correct and several media outlets are still reporting the same.

What I meant with " Any ground in this Country " - Did not include grounds like Forest Green - Forfar - Ferndale ;)

The 3 big grounds in the UK - And some premier league grounds - who have hosted big games before .

If they want a venue for the Play-Off final then send them to the Principality Stadium. A Cracking stadium to host a big event.
Or Champions League final as the stadium hosted the big event years ago and was really great.

If Cardiff were in the championship playoff final I would not be bothered if it was at the Millennium or Old Trafford rather than Wembley As I almost certainly would not get a ticket so I don't really care what big stadium it would be at. If I could get a ticket I would prefer to go to Old Trafford or the Millennium as they would be easier to get to. I rather think fans of Barmsley Bolton and Blackpool would prefer a northern venue anyway.

As for the Champions league it has to be in the UK if its switched from Istanbul switching it to Lisbon just causes hassle for the fans who can get there.

You have to remember that the majority of fans of English clubs always want to see their team play at Wembley. It's a big deal to them.
