UPDATED:

On Thursday afternoon that signing Palmer is no longer considered an option, despite Cardiff registering strong interest. A source said the club "looked into it but it wasn't going to work" with "other options" in the pipeline. Palmer has another year left on his contract, too, so would have cost a transfer fee to get a permanent deal over the line.

Wages cannot be agreed between both parties.

Apparently so according to Bristol Livehttps://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport ... ns-7119338

Cardiff City held talks with Bristol City's Kasey Palmer but their pursuit of the midfielder appears to have ended, WalesOnline has learned.

The 25-year-old Chelsea product moved to Ashton Gate in 2019 following loan spells with Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and the Robins themselves. Owing to a lack of game-time, Palmer then sought a move to south Wales with City's arch rivals Swansea City, with whom he made 12 appearances before being recalled by the Robins in January 2021.

Or not anymore.

Cardiff City's pursuit of Bristol City and ex-Swansea City midfielder breaks down
The Bluebirds were interested in signing the 25-year-old central midfielder

Under Nigel Pearson last season, playing just 204 Championship minutes, and it is understood the Bristol club want the player off the wage bill ahead of next season.

Indeed, our colleagues Bristol Live reported the move was perilously close to collapsing after Palmer and Cardiff had held talks over a potential move last weekend. Palmer's salary at Ashton Gate is reported to be £1.2m per year. QPR and Birmingham City were also said to be monitoring the situation.

Another Bristol City player linked!

I know there are major cutbacks happening but can't we afford to send our scouts further afield than Ashton Gate?

They probably have to go on a cheap day return on the train or maybe on National Express.

I'd suggest that the club probably has a season ticket to watch the Wurzels in case there are some more rejects for us to sign but a season ticket over there would be too expensive!

This really highlights the difficulties Morison and the club are facing when trying to sign players with experience of playing in the Championship.

A bang average player who hardly plays for a team that finished below us last season and he earns double the amount which is (apparently) our wage cap for next season.

Players will have to realise that the gravy train is coming to an end but it's going to be a hell of a job persuading decent Championship players to accept what could be a drop of 50% of their current wages.

When working on a budget it makes sense to shop locally first. Players more likely to think about us if they haven't got to worry about uprooting as well.

Oh and Bristol finished above us.

Yes but i'm also getting a bit fed up of all the Bristol rejects we've been like their care home the last few seasons.

It looks like a nothing of a story anyway thankfully !

My bad

Wonder if Swansea have any players they don't want?

It's only really this season that we are looking at Bristol players who are out of contract.

Most of the others we bought while they were in contract. Feels a bit more like us flexing as opposed to taking cast offs.

Wouldnt pay money for him.

Remember him having a lot of hype. But in-game felt he was as a complete non-entity.

He got a bit of a shock when we wouldn't pay him 20k+ a week... he'd better get use to it as no club pay him that hes simply not worth it.

Yep, probably saw what Pack and the like got when coming to us and though he'd like a bit of that.

Those days have gone mate and probably not just at Cardiff.

Exactly. I think plenty of players are going to have a shock. And around August we'll see many players having to 'settle' for wages (and clubs and leagues) they think are below them.

A player that's played just over 2 hours of football for the wurzels all season and is on 25k a week wages is on our radar?? Really, who the fluck is in charge of our scouting team? This guy is clearly a journey man with high expectations. Move on!

I love the close season rumours but I'd reserve judgement on who we're actually after til they've signed!! Particularly if the link is WOL
