Thecplayers need to realise without them there's no local parks football

The biggest problem a ref has to face is from the parents of the players who seem to forget these refs are all voluntary and some are no older than the players themselves and this transfers to the players themselves

I’m only surprised this hasn’t happened before…

Sadly, the referees are an easy target for the players who think they’re ‘it’ when in reality they are far from it…

The referees put themselves out to facilitate the game and don’t have the gift of VAR or (often) proper people on the line…

Get out there, enjoy the game (win, lose or draw), shake hands and go home…! :ayatollah:

Unfortunately up and down the country local referees are getting abuse from both the players and the parents.

For the small fee they get, it's simply not worth it. They do refereeing because they enjoy being part of a game of football, that's going because of the abuse they face. It's the exact reason I stopped doing it despite being good at it and enjoying it without the abuse.

It's unacceptable.

Part of the problem is how professional football act.

So people see their favourite players shouting at a referee/assistant referee either at a game or on TV and copy it.

So this doesn't surprise me one bit sadly.

I 100% agree with the stand the Cardiff referees are taking as the sooner players, club officials and supporters realise that without referees then there will be no game.

I think it has happened before when I was referring in the early 1990s. There was a team back then called the Somali Dragons and, I think it was in the lazarou, when after a game at pontcanna one of their players put a biro into the back of the referee as they were walking to changing rooms.

Referee thought he had been stabbed. Referees back then refused to referee a few weeks until the team were kicked out of league.

Whilst I went on to referee at a much higher level If I could say one thing to all local league teams is that us referees are on the whole former crap players who just want to add something to someone else's life by being there so a game of football can be played. We didn't do it for the £8 (what I got paid for local bsck then!)

The thing is when there is no one willing to referee that's the weekly enjoyment gone. Look after referees!

I don't know the full facts or the extent of the injury but i do know the referee in question was treated in hospital as the father of a friend of my son took him there. If he was attacked by a player or spectator, then unless and until the people who were witnesses to what happened give evidence to the police and a prosecution is brought the club(s) involved should be suspended indefinitely.

Also if the club refuse to identify the culprit they should be suspended from playing any matches and any player associated with the club is also placed under suspension until the matter is resolved.

I know a mental scaffolder, who reffed a match in Barry, when the official ref didn’t show up. He didn’t get any dissent.

Thats one of the big differences between the egg and the game we love.

Rugby players treat the ref with respect. Especially at grassroots level where the refs are only paid expenses.

The team responsible should be banned from the league, disgusting behaviour.

I agree with what they are doing 100%. I started watching my grandson at under seven football he is under nine now and I have seen a lot of the professional game creeping in constant pushing and grabbing shirts when a player goes past, the coaches do pick up on it but it still goes on. As regarding the matches this weekend I would let them go on and the players referee and see what happens or one of the watchers with a rudimentary knowledge of the rules and see where it gets them.

No issue with it at all.

I wish a few championship refs would have a weekend off. Useless and biased!

When my lad was 14, he trained to become a ref in junior football but the abuse was ridiculous including the coaches .
All 6 lads on his course gave up.

Life bans for abuse is only way
