Data Driven signings

Interesting read about Sheef Utd data driven signings. I saw a film about this a few years ago. I think it was on baseball though about signings based on statistics and data:

You're thinking of the movie Moneyball with Brad Pitt. If you can get past the fluff there is an interesting story about the revolutionary use of statistics in there. Baseball is all about the numbers & I have no idea if it translates to football.

The whole data driven/ get the laptop out world of analysing/ choosing players bores me rigid.

For me, its just created extra complexity in the game when there isn't any! It's also resulted in an army of backroom technicians with zero people skills, pretending to be coaches.

I think this is part of the reason so many younger managers believe the 3421 formation is the holy grail and never deviate from that rigid straight jacket. Riza is an example but Bulut waz utterly wedded to it, even with players who weren't good enough to carry out that plan.

I don't think all this data analysis of the game has moved things on.

Riza to be fair is happy to deviate and has even said he wants to ultimately okay with 1 pivot. Erol however. As you said. Wedded.

Brentford would only buy a player after looking at all their stats if didn't go above set standards didn't sighn them....it took 8yrs plus 170m of buying & selling before got it right for promotion...

I think Warburton resigned over it. But whilst I was a sceptic at the time and still am to an extent,I never thought such a side would become a very useful Premier League side

Lot to do with the manager.... but think they had sufficiently decent players to survive in premier league for first season and they've kicked on ever since.... Fulham did it another way they had Parker and he got them up but spent 100m+ to get relegated but the players he bought got them promoted did precisely same thing two more times before sacked Parker now doing excellently with new manager ..... last two seasons teams promoted are not buying players if do it's only one or two and getting relegated the hope is bounce up couple times and get parachute payments to keep players they ha championship is being unbalanced by this practice and city will be left as also rans if not careful.

So ultimately, in football
It’s all about money….

Whether stats or manager.
If you can buy and keep top players
And retain a system,
You can do well.

There’s a lot to it I think.

Fotmob has so much data and it’s stuff that’s needed.

Of course it can never tell you whether a player is a dickhead or not but a simple look at their socials can give you an idea about that nowadays.
