OT: Any advice on snake care?

Mon Feb 10, 2025 10:26 pm

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with keeping reptiles, specifically snakes. Looking to buy my daughter one but what to be prepared first before jumping in. We have zero experience of any reptile so was wondering how easy are they to care for? Cost of maintenance etc any other tips.

Interested in a western hognose. Female.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Think I’m more likely to reverse the scenario.
But it has definitely made me chuckle.

They are expensive.

I’ve not had any snakes but I have had lizards and you have to keep them at a certain temp with a heater and uv lights.

From research I’ve done initial out lay is a decent amount. But seems they day to day costs not to bad.

A guy I worked with had snakes & he was telling me the hardest thing to get is their food depending on what it eats. He bought frozen mice once a month from a local pet store 120 at a time. Insects are usually easier to acquire as they can be sent in the post, so can the mice but that gets expensive.

A lot of the raw dog food places usually do food like chick's mice etc ive seen them in the freezers when getting dog food

So on balance, it would be much more cost effective to buy a dog to eat the snake. Plus you can't take a snake out for a nice walk or tell it off for licking it's balls.

If your serious about buying a snake that can eat dogs then I'm not taking the piss anymore as you might set the b*stard onto me.

I'm of average height and build but quite heavy due to the guns and ammunition if that helps.
