Old away stadiums you miss

Sat Feb 08, 2025 11:28 pm

With them losing in the FA Cup, disappointed to realise that I'll never be able to watch City again play at Goodison Park.

They move to their new stadium next season.

Got me thinking, what are the away stadiums that don't exist anymore which you miss going to?

Goodison is up there for me. Last time I went there was the most recent season we were in the Premier League and while it's not for everyone, I always enjoyed going there. A proper old school ground.

The Vetch; always made me appreciate ‘home’! ;)

On a (more) serious note, I love Goodison, too! The first time I was there was for the 4-4 draw (AET) v Liverpool in the FA Cup some years ago. Liverpool took the lead four times with Ian Rush on form but Everton pegged them back. Turned out to be Sir Kenny Dalglish’ last game in charge of Liverpool first time around. Incredible atmosphere and they will miss that place!

Other ‘great’ grounds for atmosphere include Villa Park and (maybe surprisingly for many) Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park :ayatollah:

The Manor Ground at Oxford. I used to love our trips there. I would usually go on the train, a football special in the early days though these stopped running later on. It was only small but there was always a great atmosphere, particularly in the early days before enforced segregation when we would always "take their end" , Great days!!

Loved Eastville.
Great memories from there. Much prefer Rovers to City.

Last ever Everton v Liverpool game at Goodison tonight.

Very entertaining to watch, like a throwback.

They will definitely miss that stadium, though understand why they're moving.

Brilliant scenes at Everton v Liverpool in the last ever game at Goodison.

Tarkowski with a late equaliser as it ends 2-2.

Plymouth old Home Park. When Paul Mariner got the ball the whole ground was buzzing.
Same at the Dell Southampton whenever Mick Channon got the ball.

Rain or shine I used to love a big open end when we had a big following. I think back to the year of 76, my first ever away fixture at Roots Hall in the cup. Later in the season Palace in that key game at the top of the 3rd div. Start of the next Charlton at the valley followed soon after Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The ground are all still there but the stands are long gone. As for those completely gone, Oxford, Millwall, West Ham, Bristol Rovers, Derby are all up there. But top of the pile for me would be the Victoria Ground, Stoke - before the away end rebuild. Cracking atmosphere that place
