Middlesborough 'close in on Fabio Da Silva'

Fabio Da Silva

New Cardiff boss Paul Trollope has switched to a back five in pre-season and former Manchester United man Fabio has been a key part of it.

Now, though, the 26 could be on his way, with Boro said to be closing in on a move for the full-back, according to various reports.

Cardiff would be "hugely reluctant" to sell a crucial squad player but with a year left on his contract, the Bluebirds could be forced into action.

And there is talk of a £2m release clause in his contract at Cardiff City.

Ever since Fabio Da Silva scored a wonder goal against Boro last season, the Teeside club have monitored his progress, at this stage no actual offer has been put to the Welsh club.

We are told that Boro are hoping to snatch the former Manchester United player for around £1million,knowing that the Brazilian's is in his last year of his contract,it is believed Cardiff want £2million.

Cardiff manager Paul Trollope certainly did nothing to stem the speculation as he left Fabio out of Cardiff's squad for Saturday's stalemate at Birmingham.

Trollope stated “There has been some interest in Fabio which is why he was left out of the 18, and we'll look at that again next week as to how it plays out."

Fabio: Cardiff City defender's future 'resolved next week'

BBC

Sunday 7th August 2016

Fabio Da Silva began his professional career at Fluminense in his native Brazil

Cardiff defender Fabio Da Silva was left out of their opening game of the season because of interest from another club, manager Paul Trollope has said.

Newly-promoted Premier League club Middlesbrough are interested in signing the 26-year-old Brazilian.

Cardiff drew 0-0 at Birmingham City and Trollope said Fabio's future could be resolved next week.

"Coming into the first game of the season we wanted everyone fully focused on the job in hand," Trollope said.

"The timing wasn't great for us but hopefully there will be a resolution next week.

"There has been an interest from another club and that was the reason he was left out."

Fabio joined Cardiff from Manchester United in January 2014 and has made 64 league appearances for the Bluebirds.

Wales international Declan John was preferred to Fabio at left wing-back against Birmingham at St Andrews.

John, 21, has been handed his chance by Trollope having not featured under previous boss Russell Slade and sent on loan to Barnsley and Chesterfield.

"I think he'll get stronger," Trollope added. "He hasn't played football regularly at this level for a while so I think there's more to come from Dec.

"I've got a belief in him and what he is and what he can bring to the team. I'm delighted to see him out there putting in a good performance."

Cardiff and Birmingham fought out an entertaining goalless opening day stalemate at St Andrews.

Trollope, appointed Cardiff boss in May, was encouraged by his side's performance in his first competitive game in charge.

"We've tried to be really positive in the final third, tried to be brave and take chances when they come," Trollope said.

"The game plan worked to a certain extent. There's always things to improve on and we'll learn from this."

Brazilian set for Boro switch

Middlesbrough, updated: August 08, 2016 9:21 am by ClubCall

Middlesbrough are set to sign Cardiff City defender Fabio - author of a wonderful goal against Aitor Karanka's side last season.

The Brazilian full-back, who played in the 2011 Champions League final for Manchester United, was missing from the Cardiff line-up at the weekend amid rumours of an impending move to Boro. Fabio's 25-yard half-volley at the Riverside Stadium in February gave Cardiff the lead in a vital Championship contest as Karanka's side battled for automatic promotion, but Boro stormed back to win 3-1.

However, Boro fans shouldn't expect to see the 26-year-old scoring on a regular basis as the twin brother of Lyon's Rafael has only managed two league goals in seven years. Reports suggest Boro have triggered a release clause in the player's contract at the Cardiff City Stadium and will get their man for £2million.

Agreed, but if it is going to happen let's get it done quickly so that we can hopefully invest and address some of our weaknesses.

Gutted to see him go but its good business for us, we get some money plus big saving on wages. And he'd be silly not to go and play in the Prem at a team where he has a good chance of playing most games.

It's not Tans fault at all, Middlesborough have triggered the release clause , you cannot stop that? Plus, it's a good move for all and Fabio deserves to play Premiership football!

I'm a huge fan of Fabio and I'm very disappointed with this. Always loved his attitude and he was another player who was passionate about the team and wanted to be here, plus the wingback system is made for him. That said, I couldn't blame any player who could be playing up a level wanting to make a move and if that's the case, then just get it done. Has anyone heard if he actually wants to leave or is it something the club is pushing?

I know there's a release clause in his contract, but we should've been negotiating another contract a while back. He's made for the new formation and will end up sidelined at Boro. Defensively he will seriously struggle in the Premiership as well. A bad move all round and one that will indicate the club's lack of ambition. Tan doesn't care. He paid off that debt in readiness to sell the club( once the final parachute is paid).

He's on £25k a week allegedly
Any new contract from us would have to be much less
He would not want a drop in money so probably he would then just run down his last year and go for free at end of season
Good luck to him and personally I would thank him for going for a fee for us rather than waiting to go for free

It's the right thing for all concerned

Re: UPDATED: FABIO DA SILVA CLOSING IN ON BORO MOVE

The foundations of this club were pulled apart by Ole's wreckless spending (sanctioned by Tan). Those who run the club are learning all the time, and know if we are to progress the foundations have to be in place first. That, as we all know includes a huge amount of cost cutting which means bargain basement transfers and a better youth policy. We are a mid table club, and things may get worse before they get better. May as well get used to the fact that we need to do things properly this time, and that may mean quite a few seasons of mid table mediocrity before we are in a position for a serious crack at promotion. I just hope we don't get into a relegation battle while the club are trying to get on a more sound financial footing.

I know you're not really interested in the "good" of Cardiff City FC as a whole, fella, but have you stopped to think whether Tan is actually learning from his mistakes and trying to pt the club in a position where it/he is no longer in debt and can then action a plan to take us forward again?? :?

As 'nubbsy' rightly says, he has (to date) repaid an awful of historic debt (i.e. that which was here before he arrived) and also much of that which he helped build after his involvement

Tan is obviously not a stupid man (maybe 'football' naive) and it is in his own interests to see Cardiff City FC as a solvent, progressive club before he moves us on to the next temporary custodian

Slate him over his handling of the red and some other things, but have a little think about some of the good he has actually achieved with little or no credit because he obviously does care to a large extent ;)

As for Fabio (the actual subject of the thread ;) ) I am disappointed to see him go and think he was well suited to the style of play under Paul Trollope. However, given another chance at the Premier League and seeing as how we will get (a) a good fee for him, and (b) a fair bit off the wage bill, I fully understand both sides position and I wish him all the very best when/if it is completed :ayatollah:

Very bad move by the club if their ambitious for promotion

Shocking move, we have sold Malone and now this could possibly happen with no recognised senior left back in the squad that is very worrying and I don't think we can rely on John for the whole of this campaign.
