'Something to prove' - Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock signs Nathaniel Mendez-Laing six months after Cardiff City sacking

The former Bluebirds winger was axed on the eve of the season after what the club has described as a serious breach of contract

Tuesday 2nd February 2021

Ex-Cardiff City winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has joined up with Neil Warnock at Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock has signed ex-Cardiff City winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, five months after he was sacked by the Bluebirds.

The Welsh capital city club rocked its fan base with a bombshell statement on the eve of this Championship campaign when they announced Mendez-Laing's contract had been terminated.

While the club have never gone into detail, then manager Neil Harris stated that it was because of a "serious breach of contract" but he was "bound by legal protocol" not to divulge anymore.

It is not the first time Mendez-Laing has left a club under a cloud.

No links can be drawn between his Bluebirds departure and his mysterious exit at Peterborough back in 2012, but it is certainly noteworthy.

At the time, Darren Ferguson's Peterborough United fined and transfer listed Mendez-Laing and three others over a "breach of club discipline". Although he was eventually taken back in by Posh.

But Warnock has now given the 28-year-old another chance, signing him on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Warnock was the man who brought him to the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2017. He flourished in the division and helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League, where he notably scored two goals on the final day of the season in a 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

He is certainly a player Warnock knows well and given the five-month hiatus and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his exit, the manager said he now has something to prove.

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I know Mendez well and he’ll give us an added dimension," the Middlesbrough boss said.

"It’ll be couple of weeks before he’s match fit but it’ll be great to have him for this run-in now.

“We have been short of wide players and he is a player with something to prove. We’re looking forward to having him here.”

Mendez-Laing scored 14 goals in 92 appearances for the Bluebirds.

Derby County hope to 'snap up' sacked Cardiff City star Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

Former Cardiff City man Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

Derby County are looking into the prospect of signing former Cardiff City star Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

The attacker has been without a club since his contract with the Bluebirds was terminated last year.

The report that the Rams are hoping to "snap up" Mendez-Laing, who as a free agent would be able to sign for any club after the transfer deadline elapses on Monday at 11pm.

The Bluebirds shocked their fan base on the eve of the 2020/21 season with a bombshell statement to announce that Mendez-Laing had been sacked owing to an alleged serious breach of contract. The exact reason remains a mystery.

He opened up on his struggles of the past year in an Instagram post last month.

"Be proud of how you handled last year," he wrote.

"I don’t know about you but I fought so many silent battles, I had to humble myself, wipe my own tears and pat myself on the back, I’m sure most of you had to do the same, be proud of you!

"Saying that, in one of my toughest years, I gained my biggest blessing.

"Happy New Year, everyone."

Derby could offer the 28-year-old a route back into football, and boss Wayne Rooney has confirmed to supporters that they will be active in the next two days.

"There will be players coming in in the next 48 hours," Rooney said last night.

"So I'll get back to work after I have spoken to you (the media).

"I am hoping to have players in, I am fairly confident there will be (players in)."

Asked if it will be more than one signing, Rooney said: "I hope so, we need more than one.

"We are quite far down the line with a few players

"I have got the ability to bring more than one in - two, three or four players if I want.

"I am not looking to bring players in to make numbers up, I want to make sure the players I bring in are the right players for the club. We have been working on that."

It’s all over Derby’s sites

I heard Mendez-Laing had a six month ban, so why did City get rid of a player of his quality and cost City millions

Costing Derby nothing as he is a free agent

Derby County are interested in signing Nathaniel Mendez-Laing on a free transfer, according to Alan Nixon.

Wayne Rooney will be eager to bring in some players before Monday’s deadline, after overseeing his side’s 1-0 home victory over Bristol City today.

Lots of rumours surrounding Mendez-Laing but none have been confirmed other than the Bluebirds were 'doing the right thing' by sacking him

Clearly, the 'issue' has either gone away or been resolved and Derby will have done due diligence

If he goes to Derby, then best of luck to him; but I honestly don't think he is/was as good as some would now have us believe and we need to remember the drifted in and out of our team under successive managers

I personally think the board jumped at the opportunity to get Mendez Laing's wages off the books without paying anything using the "Broken Contract" spiel. We've missed him this season to be honest.

Agree 100% with this Chris.

Should also be remembered that he hasn't played competitive professional football or trained with a professional team for six months. That is a long time for a professional.

Will take him a while to get up to speed.

He'll be 29 in April as well and will soon lose his speed, which is his best asset.

His best years are behind him which is why the best offer he has is from a team that are 18th in the Championship.

I would happily take him back. If the manager signed him I’d would review my opinion of him.

In football terms I'd take him back in a heartbeat. His return towards the end of last season along with the return of Tomlin, of course, pushed us into the playoffs. :bluescarf:

Yep he was instrumental. Can’t see it happening though. If it did what’s show of intent. And a great move by the manager. I’m sure Mendez would happily return as well.

I honestly can’t believe what I’m reading. NML was class for us. Who knows what went on in the summer. As soon as he left, I knew we’d be massively up against it this season. He was the one person who could create chances and stretch the game from nothing. A massive miss IMO. Bar Moore, I’d swap any other player for him, I rated him that much

I can remember him drifting in to a game at old Trafford I was gutted when he left but the club must have had good reasons

A bit over the top. He’s only been here a week!
Not my choice by a long way but why the hell the personal insult?

It just rhymes. He’s now where near my first choice nor was he’s the clubs. I wouldn’t have bothered if I knew it would upset so many so badly.
Thought people would have more to worry about. Than a bit of faceless online banter.
My bad.

Good player when fit but his health issues held him back.chronic asthma wasn't it?.

He would have a good game 1 out of 5 games. Really think he’s been over rated on here last few seasons.

This is the player we have missed desperately.

Whatever the issue was, if he's cleared then bloody get him back!

Completely agree. Likelihood they would have done the same to pretty much all the squad members on contracts the owner no longer wants to pay. We have missed his pace and his one good game in five made him just like all our other offensive wide players for inconsistency.

I fully agree with club for cancelling his contract..
There are reasons why he hasn’t been snapped up before..
We have missed his pace, he has let the club and fans down..
a good player on his day, but his day were 2 good games then 3 average/

For goodness sake you just cannot sack a player if he has done nothing wrong, the club cannot just say breach of contract unless there was one. Don't you both think that if there was no breach of contract that the PFA would be on the case. There are no comments from them or anyone else, it says it all does it not?

Whatever happened it appears 6 months on he is now free to join another club.

If the alleged rumours are true, then Derby are taking a massive gamble.

I'm not suggesting there wasn't a breach of contract. There evidently was. The point I've not made very well is that the board jumped on the opportunity to get a big wage and no likely sell on value off the books. And that in the current situation they would have done the same with most of our squad.

The contrast with how a high value PL player is treated is clear. PL clubs are not going to dismiss a player with a multi million pound value and repeatedly don't regardless of misdemeanours.
