Rebecca Welch will referee our game with Norwich City on Saturday.
I think I'm right in thinking that she will be the first female to referee one of our games?
This season, she has been in charge of four games. Two in League One, one in League Two and one in the Championship - showing a total of 21 yellow cards and 1 red card.
Last season, she refereed 23 games. The majority of those were in League One and League Two, with two in the Championship. She showed a total of 76 yellow cards and no red cards.
She was the first official to be involved in a Premier League game, after being fourth official in Fulham v Manchester United at the weekend.

That card count this season doesn't make good reading. 5.25 yellows on average per game and red cards a player once in every 4 matches!
Whilst 4 games do not make a season, on initial reading that looks excessive. Maybe one of the stato's could find out the average figure.
I hope she is not trying to "overstamp" her authority and lets the game flow.

65 red cards in total last season.
552 games in a season so that's a red every 8.5 games.
So she's about twice as prolific at producing a red than last season's average. Wow.
Tue Nov 07, 2023 9:26 pm
Way to miss the fact that she reffed 23 games last season with zero red cards and 1 red card in 4 games this season, so of her 27 games she has managed 1 whole red card which is way under the average.
Sexist much guys?
Just come out & say so rather than hiding behind your selective stats to prove she's a female who needs to overcompensate by stamping her authority on the hard done by male footballers.
You really can make this shit up apparently.

Well I simply stated facts in answer to a previous question. No mention of her sex.
Sexist from you much?! Wow. Some people will take offence in anything.
Tue Nov 07, 2023 9:58 pm
And she actually refereed 2 championship games. 7 yellows. No reds.
Choose your stats much?!

I'd rather have Raquel Welch.

Some interesting responses and fair comments, I don't think anyone is being sexist.
To be clear, I didn't include the two games she's been in charge of this season or the seven last season in the WSL.
In general, there are less cards in the WSL than the EFL - that's a fact. But in her two games this season in that league, she's shown a total of 14 yellow cards and one red card. In her six last season in the WSL, she showed 18 yellow cards and 1 red card.
But, as I say, there are more cards in EFL games as a general rule.
In her last 11 EFL games, she has shown at least four cards in 10 of those.
Must be remembered though that the criteria to receive a yellow card has been reduced this season so there will be more shown.
Finally, we actually average the joint third least yellow cards per game in the Championship this season with 1.73 per game. We are 5th on the fair play table with 24 yellow cards and one red card.
Teams that play against us average 1.93 yellow cards per game.
The average yellow cards per game in the Championship this season is 4.3.
These are the stats, which is all we can judge it on fairly.

FOR GODS SAKE, the fact that we have a female referee should be celebrated as a progression, the woman's game is the fastest growing sport throughout the world and there is no reason that a woman cannot do every bit as good a job as a man, in fact she may well do a better job that many of the male refs we have had. As a former referee I am looking forward to seeing how she performs as a
referee not as a woman

I think it might favour us, every week I see the same pulling players back fouls when we try to break quickly and never a yellow card, she might book a few early which should allow us to play.
Obviously, Bulut should be pointing this out and making sure we don't fall into the same problems, you have to adapt to the officials as well as all other aspects of the game.

I sense a little sexist humour already creeping in ahead of this match. (lads being lads)
Hardly a game goes by without insults being shouted at the male refs for decisions by either sets of supporters.
The fact she is female will make no difference.
She has been accepted to ref at this level so good luck to her.
However, I hope we don't hear the expected sexist chanting, but I'm not holding my breath.
I expect she gets this most games.

Let's hope she's not keeping an eye on Perry Ng then or we could be in trouble.

If she makes a bad decision she will hear about it for sure, it's a pressure job as it is, hopefully being at home should give us an advantage.

Very good point made about Perry ng , I think he’s had 3-4 yellows already

Sorry guys the comments on this thread are just wrong, just sexist, it is not funny. The referee will be judged on how well they control the game and the decisions they make not whether they are a man or a woman.
I truly hope our fans behave like adults on the weekend, not like mindless idiots. Newport fans let their club down a few weeks ago, let's not be that club!!! Refereeing is very difficult at the top level and they don't have benefits of replays and slowing the game down frame by frame (maybe in the premier League)
Time to grow up and judge on facts not gender!!!

Is she allowed to be late ?
Sat Nov 11, 2023 5:46 pm
I thought she has an awful game.
Sat Nov 11, 2023 5:49 pm
Sorry.
But, I strongly disagree with women refereeing men’s football matches. Same for men refereeing women’s games.
Men should referee men’s games, women should referee women’s games.
You can’t expect a woman to control a game of men’s football. It isn’t gonna happen. The only reason women are refereeing men’s games is because they’re women, not on their ability.
On another note, I thought she had a dreadful game. Half the time she wasn’t clear with her decisions. The players didn’t know where they were coming or going!!
