TV and Streaming

This match, like all Championship fixtures on the opening weekend, has been selected for live coverage on Sky Sports+

Club Connections

This is a new section to the match thread where we look at players who have played for both teams.

Simon Moore had a spell at Cardiff City and has signed for Sunderland this summer.

Historically there have been a number of players to have played for both teams.

Most notably these are Adam Matthews, Michael Chopra and Fraizer Campbell.

Rival Players

This is another new section where we list opposition players who have played for Bristol City or Swansea, so people know why they’re being booed.

Funnily enough, for this game there are no players that fit that description.

The Opposition's Manager

Regis Le Bris is the new Sunderland manager.

This is his second managerial role after leaving Lorient in France at the end of last season.

He had a playing career in France, including spending eight years at Rennes.

Opposition Dangerous Players

Jobe Bellingham scored seven goals last season and the 18 year old is expected to kick on this season.

Alan Browne is a new signing. He has a huge amount of Championship experience, having spent ten years at Preston.

It is unclear if Jack Clarke will stay at Sunderland but he has double figures in goal and assists in each of the last two seasons.

Head To Head

Sunderland won 2-0 at CCS in March.

That was one of three wins for them in the last five meetings, with us winning two.

We haven’t beaten Sunderland at home since 2018.

Team News - Predicted Line-Ups

First game of the season means it’s almost impossible to predict the teams, but these were the teams for each side in their final pre-season friendlies:

Cardiff City: Horvath, Ng, Chambers, Goutas, O’Dowda, Siopis, Ralls, Ramsey, Tanner, Willock, Meite

Sunderland: Patterson, Hume, O'Nien, Alese, Cirkin, Neil, Browne, Jobe, Roberts, Clarke, Mayenda

Last Game

Nothing to see here for this game but it will be a feature as the season goes on. No relevance for the last games as it’s the first game of the season.

Match Odds

Cardiff City - 9/5
Sunderland - 29/20
Draw - 23/10

Sunderland confirm two transfer deals as summer heats up under chiefs Kristjaan Speakman and Stuart Harvey

Sunderland concluded two transfer deals in the days leading up to the Marseille game on Saturday
Sunderland’s pre-season came to an end on Saturday with two transfer deals completed in the days leading up to the game.

Leading up to the game, Sunderland concluded a deal for goalkeeper Blondy Nna Noukeu after a successful trial period with the club. The former Stoke City man was present at Valley Parade after his deal.

Noukeu completes Sunderland’s senior goalkeeping group for the season ahead and will compete for minutes alongside Simon Moore and established first-choice Anthony Patterson.

Wiped the floor with us in both games although we got a late winner against them up there that was a bit of a freak goal.

It will be interesting to see how we cope with them this game.

We've beaten them in our last 2 trips to the Stadium of Light, and won 4 out of our last 8 meetings; drawing 1.

Home. Stronger squad. Full season with the same manager. Home win!

Ideally I’d like to get Kanga in from the off. We need to know how desperately we need another striker.

Team above with CR up front and Meite or Tanner on right. (Warming the shirts for El Ghazi).

ELLIOT EMBLETON is joining Blackpool on a permanent basis, with his departure from Sunderland expected to be confirmed before the start of the new Football League season.

Le Bris is trying to trim his first-team squad ahead of Saturday’s Championship season-opener against Cardiff City with midfielder Jay Matete and forward Luis Hemir also having been made available for transfer.

Sunderland’s attempts to add to their squad continue, but despite holding talks over both Alexandre Mendy and Ike Ugbo, the prospects of a new striker arriving before the opening weekend of the new campaign are now remote.

It was a long time ago admittedly but you have missed out the one of the greatest players to have payed at either club and he deserves a mention.

Trevor Ford- went from Villa to Sunderland for a British Record transfer fee of £30K in 1950 and to us for same amount in 1956. Record Welsh goalscorer at the time with 23 goals from 38 games including a hat trick against Belgium and scoring twice against England on two occasions.

My dad’s favourite all time player. He’d tell me that keepers used to catch the ball from a corner and immediately throw it out for fear of being hit by Ford, seconds after catching the ball. Legal then I believe

Re: TEAM NEWS: “ CARDIFF CITY v SUNDERLAND “ MATCH THREAD

Regis Le Bris has discussed his team news ahead of Sunderland’s clash with Cardiff City.

The Sunderland head coach is preparing for his competitive debut in the dugout as the Black Cats travel to Wales.

Le Bris will be approaching two months in the job this weekend and has been tasked with reaching the play-offs after an underwhelming 16th place finish last term.

Sunderland have welcomed three new signings to Wearside as they look to bring in some experience, though Alan Browne is the only one likely to feature due to Ian Poveda’s injury.

The Colombian isn’t the only one absent either, with Le Bris being dealt a major blow last month when it was confirmed that Dan Ballard would be sidelined for up to six weeks.

That is likely to mean Aji Alese will be pushed into the middle, which isn’t too much of an issue considering his brilliant form for the club.

Sunderland set to be without defender v Cardiff

However, it now appears that Sunderland have suffered yet another injury, with Le Bris confirming one player’s absence in today’s press conference.

When asked by the media whether he had any fresh concerns, he replied: “I think we just have Leo [Hjelde] who maybe won’t be available this weekend, but the others should all be available.”

Hjelde has urged Le Bris to play him in a more central role this season and will be frustrated that his injury could prevent his opportunity from replacing the injured Ballard.

However, the 20-year-old was far from impressive last season and it would be a huge surprise if he gets much of a look-in as a start this term.

He was a few years before my time but my grandfather used to tell me how he would barge into goalkeepers. As you say all very legal then.

Sunderland play Cardiff City in Wales on Saturday in what promises to be a tough opening game for both teams.

Erol Bulut says Cardiff have prepared well this summer, signing the likes of previous Sunderland target Chris Willock among others.

The Black Cats meanwhile have signed four free agents; Simon Moore, Alan Browne, Ian Poveda, and Blondy Nna Noukeu.

Many more are expected to arrive at the Stadium of Light this summer, with Kristjaan Speakman desperate to sign a striker.

Le Bris spoke out on Sunderland’s striker search on Thursday and insisted that he’s happy with his current options, suggesting that Eliezer Mayenda will start vs Cardiff City.
