TV and Streaming

This match, like all Carabao Cup fixtures this season, has been selected for live coverage on Sky Sports+

Club Connections

Struggling with this but one player I can think of who has played for both clubs is Joe Jacobson.

A Cardiff fan, he came through our academy but only played one first team fixture.

He went on to make 73 appearances for Bristol Rovers.

He also had spells with Shrewsbury and Wycombe.

Rival Players

Scott Sinclair spent three years at Swansea so he is a player we are well aware of.

The Opposition's Manager

Matt Taylor was appointed Bristol Rovers manager last year.

When in charge of Exeter, he successfully took them to promotion from League Two.

He also had a spell in charge of Rotherham.

Opposition Dangerous Players

Promise Omichere is a new signing, he scored six for Fleetwood last season.

Sinclair is always a threat.

Head To Head

We actually played Bristol Rovers in a friendly a couple of weeks ago, winning 2-0.

Our last competitive meeting came in 2016, also in the Carabao Cup, when they beat us 1-0 after extra time.

Team News - Predicted Line-Ups

Both teams are expected to make a number of changes from their league line-ups at the weekend.

Last Game

We lost 2-0 at home to Sunderland on Saturday.

On the same day, Bristol Rovers won 1-0 at home to Northampton.

Match Odds

Cardiff City - 8/11
Bristol Rovers - 4/1
Draw - 2/1

Looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat in the EFL Championship, Cardiff City will host Bristol Rovers at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday in the first round of the EFL Cup.

While the hosts lost their first league match of 2024-25, the visitors secured a last-gasp victory against Northampton Town in their League One opener.

Re: TEAM NEWS: “ CARDIFF CITY v BRISTOL ROVERS “ MATCH THREA

After narrowly avoiding an unthinkable relegation into League One in 2022-23, surviving only thanks to other teams being deducted points, Erol Bulut took charge ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

Under the guidance of the Turkish manager, Cardiff saw significant improvements, finishing 12th with 62 points from 46 games, just 11 points behind the playoffs and 12 points clear of the drop zone.

Bulut's task throughout his second season at the Cardiff City Stadium will be to bridge the gap between the middle of the table and the top six, particularly through establishing greater consistency in their performances and results compared to the last campaign.

However, despite dominating possession with 65% of the ball in their opening Championship game, Cardiff were unable to capitalise and fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sunderland at their home ground.

Bulut will be hoping for a more clinical performance from his side when they face lower-league opposition, Bristol Rovers, in the first round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

Their opponents picked up a deserved victory from their opening match of the 2024-25 League One season, defeating Northampton Town 1-0 thanks to a 92nd-minute winner from Bryant Akono Bilongo on his debut for the club.

Remarkably, that was Bristol Rovers' first win on the opening day of a league season since 2011, ending a long unwanted streak in a campaign where they aim to build on last year's 15th-place finish.

Matt Taylor's first pre-season in charge of the club, having taken over the managerial position in December 2023, was a largely successful one, winning five of their seven friendlies.

However, their pre-season ended on a sour note with a 2-0 defeat to Tuesday's opponents at the Memorial Stadium, a result unlikely to boost the Pirates' confidence ahead of this one.

Previous Meetings…

It has not been long since Rovers played Cardiff, meeting the Bluebirds in the final pre-season match before the start of the season at The Memorial Stadium. The visitors left with a 2-0 victory after brilliant first-half goals from Aaron Ramsey and Joe Ralls.

The last competitive meeting between the two sides also came in the Carabao Cup, with the Gas coming away with a 1-0 victory at home after a goal in extra time from Chris Lines in 2016.

The Pirates last visited the Cardiff City Stadium in 2009, losing 3-1 in the same competition.

Most of us of a certain age love a good cup run because when we were younger all the cups were important & they're not now. Some of the big teams don't put a first team line up out unless it's a semi final.

You could argue that because squad depth is stronger these days with the top clubs, they don’t need to put out a first choice team.

Man City especially could put out a third choice team and still beat most Premier League clubs.

Top defending by Robertson to dispossess Garrett in Cardiff's box. He wins City a goal kick.

Something happened! Cardiff with a haopeful ball forward to Kanga and it falls kindly to Robertson, who plays a one-two with the striker before letting an effort go from 20 yards. It's deflected over the bar
