Heard a lot of people saying the crowd was low on Saturday because of the new Sky Sports+ that meant people could watch it at home.
They also said a 12.30pm kick off was an inconvenient time.
That’s rubbish in my opinion.
When we were last in the Premier League, our first home game was a 12.30 kick off live on TV against Newcastle. The crowd that day was 30k+.
Don’t even say that the rain stopped people going. Unless you’re in the front few rows, you’re covered from the rain. There was a big Palestinian march in town and they weren’t put off by the rain.
It was pouring with rain for the Swansea home game last season but that was a big crowd.
So my question is this.
Is the reality that we will only have big crowds when we’re in the PL or doing well in the Championship?
Is our actual core home crowd only about 17/18k?
We have just under 14k season ticket holders so that’s about 4k who are buying tickets for individual matches. Even less for midweek games.
Finally, does this highlight that our fan base is not as loyal as people make it out to be?
The likes of Sunderland get 35k+ every week. Even in League One, they were getting bigger crowds than we do.
Also when we were in the PL, we always sold out Man City and Man Utd away. Burnley isn’t a million miles from Manchester and will we sell that out? I doubt it.
It seems to me we don’t have a big loyal fan base, a lot of them will only come when we have success.

We have a lot of plastics.
When we are in the PL they take their UTD and Liverpool shirts off and put a Cardidf shirt on, then say they have supported Cardiff since they were 3.
Fast forward 12 months and it's "Oh I only went to see the big name players, my old man was a Liverpool fan and I have been always too"
The time didn't make a difference. If 3000 Sunderland fans could make it, with no problems, that says it all.

We just not that big of a club. You got the core supporters who will go regardless, then there be some more for exciting winning football in the championship. And then big increase when in the prem, but they there to watch the other teams. And that’s life I guess.

So many questions in the OP & I think the answer to most of them is yes, probably even all of them.
People like & enjoy success, that's all there is to it really. There will always be a hardcore number of supporters but even if we went down a division we would lose maybe as much as 30% of our current attendance, just look at the crowds (crowds?) when we were in the basement & that's the hardcore supporter level.

Every Championship game is available.
But other clubs are not being hurt, so that one for me is NO a laim excuse.
Usually it’s the weather, parking car, shopping, early kick off, etc etc
We find more excuses than any other fans

The one consistant is the walk up crowd it averages 4k for many years whilst in championship .... except after Xmas if we are challenging for top 6! Not sure if can boost the ST take up unless put them at Bradford price levels even then not sure be much better .... consistently good performances is only way to boost crowd levels on match day ... it is what it is no matter how much we winge about the situation.

There are several clubs who's following is fantastic no matter what league they're in Sunderland one of them.... wish we don't get compared to other clubs in this regard as its very difficult to compare like for like as you say its a religion to them to most of our fans its a pass time!

Yeah, we’re not the sleeping giant people think we are. The only thing sleeping is our defence

It's sad that we don't get bigger crowds. Even sadder when you think we're a capital city, nice stadium, VFM ST prices, Carling Black Label on tap.
With us it'll always be a winning team that pulls the numbers in unfortunately unless we get a big cup draw.
What goes slightly against us is that public transport is a bit hit and miss to the stadium - the train no longer goes to NP which doesn't help, so you've got the 20 minute walk from Strangetown or 30 minutes from Central.
There's also far too many armchair Scousers and Mancs in Wales which doesn't help matters.

Get in the top 5 crowds will come back play like sat and they will drop like a ton weight play shit unexciting football it will also drop when warnock was manager we had better crowds before we gotto the promised land i enjoy the aways more
most fans that go away are singers so it creates a better atmo

Train still goes to NP mate. I was on it on Saturday and chatting to a couple of Sunderland fans.

The football Cardiff play has been dire over the last few seasons, and continues based on the first game. If the football gets better perhaps the crowds will increase. Let's hope it does
Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:03 am
I don't think we're that bigger club go back to when we brought Bellamy in on loan and finished 4th playing some fantastic football under Dave Jones we only averaged just over 22,000. That was before the rebrand and a time when we had a new stadium and was genuine excitement around the club.
The two times we been in the premier League there were plenty of empty seats about outside of the 'glamour' games
Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:48 am
All fair points, what also isn't helping (recently) is the fact we've only won 10 of our last 24 home games.

The whole matchday experience has gradually been taken away. Are the stewards helping? Is it enjoyable to go to games now, compared to brilliant afternoons at 'the old girl'?' ....On top is the boring sideways, backwards football being served on the pitch. Fans want to be entertained, kids expect shots, goals, excitement and above all a team that gives 100% both on the pitch and from the side. I don't honestly think we're being given decent entertainment value at home.
Nobody wants to attend home matches, go home in a worse state of mind, following another poor display, and probable defeat. Shopping with the good lady, a few spring waters on the side, could well be a better alternative! It's a tough old world out there at the moment, we need something to put a smile back on our face. Let's hope "Edge of your seat football" returns and quickly.
P.S. Sky's idea of moving kick off times around, will doubtless hamper ticket sales. Kids/ junior football /activities Saturday mornings, really don't help. Also many now until lunchtime, chasing the dollar

We had Ifoloow last season and I had all matches FREE internet.
So it’s all rubbish that because of Sky less fans will come.
Just another excuse
Tue Aug 13, 2024 9:59 am
Most points have been mentioned, dire football, poor recent home record, match day experience, plastics etc.
But we should also remember that there are thousands of City fans out there that can't afford to buy a season ticket or go to many games per season, especially if they have kids, it can be an expensive day out. Most of these fans target the derbies and games against the bigger clubs.

5th highest in the Championship, but look at the five who aren’t on that list:
Luton (small stadium)
Oxford (small stadium)
Millwall and QPR (stadium holds less than the crowd we got)
Preston (standard crowd)

I blame the parents. Sunderland fans sons are Sunderland fans.
The number of parents I see endorsing Man City/Prem/even Saudi shirts makes me sick.
FORCE THE KIDS TO A LIFETIME OF LOYAL DISAPOINTMENT!

Agree Annis you need sky sports to get city and its probably cheaper to go to games if live Cardiff area than get subscription just so can watch City sitting on armchair! I wouldn’t dream of doing that even when costs
about & £100 per game + 5/6 hours travel time ....
Tue Aug 13, 2024 1:39 pm
I did not renew my season ticket for first time in 40 years for a number of reasons I will get to as many matches as I can but for mid week games that mean 120 round trip I will catch them on sky I have seen nearly 1000 home games in my time but I think i will make only about 12 this year the first being Leeds game.

My point is how can they suddenly then afford to come to every game when we’re in the top two or in the Premier League?
As far as I’m aware, the club doing well on the pitch doesn’t make fans have more money.

We have a hardcore fan base which is decreasing.
You have to look back to the 90s when we weren’t attractive enough for the younger generation, who were attracted to the big clubs. Cardiff City did nothing to help bring youngsters to support their local club.

That argument is fair enough but it’s not fair to say it’s because people can’t afford it, when they can afford it when we’re doing well.
People moan about £30 ticket prices for away games but I remember going to Chelsea in the PL when the tickets were £70+ and we sold out the away end. This was before the PL put a price cap on away tickets.

First game for a while with my lad. Sat in block 111 and steward all game for anyone slightly standing linger than 5 secs on them.
Then some guy told off about using a vape. Never saw but let's assume he did...steward was so aggressive to him about it then proceeded to report to 8 other stewards who constantly started in our direction for 30 mins...
So over the top. Match day experience is never the same no banter with away fans. We can't hear them and likewise...
Also Sunderland had 2200 just under now 3000 as has been mentioned a few times. Still very good mind
We have to accept we are not a big club as maybe some thing we are...Cardiff is a multi cultural city with people not just interested in football. Those that are still living off parents supporting English premier teams like Liverpool, man u and Leeds etc
Stop the obsession I say with our crowds they are what they are ..if you go and enjoy that's main thing...

First I won’t stop the Obsession with Crowds as I have loved knowing and talking Crowds for 50 yrs.
If you don’t like it, stay off.
I out of order to say that.
Some fans love talking crowds and it’s part of football.
Wayne Nash has gone well over the top in ruining The Atmosphere at CCS.
Our Fans want to see and hear an Atmosphere and especially younger ones.
Well out of order our stewards.
Away end now this season, we’ve paid for a Private Security Firm, costing more money lol
Yes originalally it was said 3.000 Sunderland
Plus Crowds are the backbone of football, I am shocked by your remarks.
