Derby Manager: “ Nat Phillips “

Derby's Nat Phillips is set for a reunion with his former loan club next weekend, with his new boss revealing why he signed the centre-back.

Phillips joined the Pride Park outfit on loan for the season, despite Cardiff promising to bring him back again to Cardiff.

The 27-year-old has trained with the Rams and is now set to make his bow against his old employers. Paul Warne, the Derby boss, believes he'll be an asset at both ends of the pitch.

Paul Warne:

"Liverpool were a brilliant help with us regarding Nat," he said. "I spoke to him at length. We wanted another centre-back and a lot of work went into it and Liverpool agreed to loan him out us for the season.”

"We had three, Cash (Eiran Cashin) was out and Sonny Bradley had a tweak and then you're panicking. You can't go to January with three centre-backs.”

"I just feel that Nat brings a lot of calm on the ball which, at times, we need. He is a very good defender obviously. He will be a threat from set-pieces and that's what my centre-backs need to be.

"That's what I said to him. 'You can play, there will be loads of defending for you and you won't be unemployed, guaranteed. We will get you to score goals and you don't know where that will take you next summer'.”

"I think he brings a bit of calm and he will enable me to play three when I want to with two up top. That is what I will do.“

Derby County's midfield had a major overhaul over the summer, with key players from their League One spell leaving the club, while new stars have arrived.

After two seasons of playing in the third tier, it was important that Paul Warne re-shaped his team, starting with those in the middle of the park.

The Rams had perhaps been too lightweight at times in the last couple of years, but still were able to win promotion back to the Championship at the second time of asking.

The introduction of Ebou Adams on loan from Cardiff City helped bulk up the midfield in January, and although he has now rejoined Derby on a permanent deal, it has been the signing of another loanee that has excited the Pride Park faithful.

Crystal Palace have allowed Warne to borrow David Ozoh for the 2024/25 campaign, and the 19-year-old has already had a huge impact on the team.

Went for a Cardiff win. He has to go with an attacking team. If he goes defensive and we lose, he's going to lose what fans he has left.

Derby have a weak team, you only have to look at the players who used to play for us to realise how weak they are.

We will do well to come away with a draw.

if Bulut plays to his normal tactics Derby will fancy themselves against us. As some have said we need to goat them from the start and be consistent in that. I can't see that happening.

Derby County will aim to carry on where they left off when they host Cardiff City next weekend as they look to record a third successive home win in the Championship.

New signings Nat Phillips and Marcus Harness will be in contention for a place in the squad having signed on deadline day as the Rams look to build on a terrific 3-0 win over Bristol City.

Bristol City head coach Liam Manning referred to Derby County's atmosphere when he said that, in the second half in particular, his team had been caught up in the emotion generated on the terraces.

Given what we have witnessed so far at Pride Park, you sense he will not be the first or last manager this season to worry about the decibel levels impacting the performance of the players. Paul Warne has made a point of praising the fans for how they have become a key weapon in their arsenal and if you recall he mentioned it in an exclusive interview with Derbyshire Live after the club won promotion.

Some confusion over Jesper Daland’s omission from the Norway squad but it is believed that he wasn’t named in the recent match day squads as a precaution following his injury playing for Cardiff City in the Championship. Erol Bulut hopes he will be back in the squad for Saturday’s game versus Derby County but will assess during the week

I’d be more optimistic of him playing than not but we have very good back up in Goutas.., :ayatollah:

If we don't take it to, and have the upper hand on promoted Derby; after an international break... then we're in trouble.

Derby County’s manager is Paul Warne, who was appointed in September 2022.

During his playing career, Warne operated as a midfielder and spent most of his career at Rotherham United, making over 250 league appearances for the Millers.

Switching to management after his career, he took over in a caretaker role at Rotherham in November 2016, following the departure of Kenny Jackett, before being appointed on a permanent basis in the following January.

During his time as manager of the Millers, the side secured promotion from League One to the Championship on three occasions, as well as winning the EFL Trophy.

Last season, Warne led Derby County back to the second tier, finishing second in League One.

In his 105 games in charge of the club, he has 55 victories, a win percentage of 52.38%.

Over the summer, the Rams made the acquisition of midfielder Ebou Adams on a permanent basis, following his successful loan last season.

The side have also brought in centre-back Nathaniel Phillips, who spent last term in the Welsh capital.

On their way to promotion in the 2023/24 season, former City trio Curtis Nelson, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and James Collins all played integral roles.

Winger Mendez-Laing was nominated for the League One Player of the Season at the end of last campaign.

Following his departure from the Bluebirds, goalkeeper Rohan Luthra has also joined Derby County.

Derby County will be looking to build on their impressive start to the season when they host Cardiff City on Saturday.

Derby County are back in Championship action on Saturday and are once again playing at Pride Park.

Last time out, Paul Warne’s men played host to Bristol City and beat them 3-0 to extend their unbeaten home record at the start of the 2024/25 season.

That result left the Rams 10th in the Championship table going into the September international break.

Given Derby were among the favourites to go down this season, Warne should be pleased with how they have started the campaign.

Another home victory could well be on the cards this weekend given how badly Cardiff have started the current campaign.

The Welsh outfit were beaten 2-0 by Middlesbrough in their last Championship fixture and are now dead bottom of the division with a -9 goal difference.

DERBY COUNTY MANAGER PAUL WARNE: “ INJURY UPDATE “

Derby County have had players away on international duty:

Paul Warne: “This season is a learning curve for us and we are just getting use to the Championship.”

Manager Paul Warne has provided an update on his Derby County squad following the September international break.

Four members of the first-team squad travelled across the world to link up with their respective nations - Guatemala’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Gambia’s Ebou Adams, Sweden’s Jacob Zetterström and Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa

“We have had injuries and a few are slowly coming back, thankfully those that went away on international duty are all arriving back today and tomorrow.”

Speaking to RamsTV, Warne said: “Kane Wilson will join the group today [Thursday], Ben Osborn has trained all week.

“He’s [Osborn] been unfortunate with injuries over the last couple of years, he’s a full-energy midfielder and he covered over 12km against Middlesbrough, which was more than anyoneon the pitch.

“We have to get the best version of him and we have to manage the players as well as we can.

“Corey Blackett-Taylor is looking really good so there is a lot of positive signs.

“Jake Rooney is a little bit further off, but he’s progressing nicely.”

The boss will also be able to call upon Nat Phillips and Marcus Harness for the first time, who will both be available for the first time since their deadline-day arrivals on loan.

On Harness, Warne explained: “He’s settled in straight away.

“Nat – I knew he would fit in and they are prepared for the battle ahead.”

Out of Derby’s four senior internationals, Warne confirmed that three will be available to face the Bluebirds at the weekend.

He said: “Tawanda has suffered a concussion so he’ll miss the next two.

“Nat is fine, Jacob is fine and Ebou is fine.”

Erol Bulut:

"Joe Ralls trained with us and he will be available," Bulut said, adding that it will be a boost to have the skipper back in contention this weekend.

"Rallsy is the captain of the team and a leader on the field and also off the field. It's always good to have him in the team.

"He missed games because of his hip and groin injuries. Right now he trained fully with us and I hope nothing will happen before Saturday."
