Ryan Smith wants UK return - Move Malky!

Tue Jul 12, 2011 10:07 pm

Former Arsenal and Southampton winger Ryan Smith has said he wants to return to UK football following a season in the MLS with Kansas City. Says he wants to be closer to his family and daughter.

As mentioned, he's previously played for Arsenal and Southampton, but has also had spells with Leicester, Derby, Millwall and Crystal Palace before his US move.

He's pretty skilful and fast, and can play as either a winger or forward. He looked pretty dangerous playing against Man Utd last year, too - http://youtu.be/vqvBNFKEUko

We've all-but missed out on Routledge now, and as we still don't know the full situation with Craig Bellamy I think it'd be good if Malky made a move for Smith - especially when you consider he's a free agent.

Anyone else think he's worth a look at? :ayatollah:

Pretty sure he wouldn't demand too much considering he wants the move for personal reasons. Really think Malky should bring him in! :ayatollah:

Looks class in that video! And on a free would be a great signing by the looks of it. Only scored 1 goal in 68 games with the other clubs he's been with except Kansas though, but he does look like he can get a few assists with that deadly low cross from the left and maybe a year out in the MLS has done him good by giving him alot of confidence, etc.

£140k is actually the equivalent of £85-90k :D

not far off, dont know whether the bonus of 144k is on top or in total, but thats still not big wages.

think his pace could be a great asset...

So he looks decent playing for Kansas in the land of the Yankee Doodlers.

Far be it for me to shit all over the first post of somebody excitedly creating a thread based around someone he believes he's spotted who could benefit us, but there are two words providing the evidence against.

Eddie Johnson.

As in, which MLS team did he play for? Which team did he look like a "star" for?

Skipping past Da Silva isn't exactly a major feat, tbh... defending not his forte. Friendly match, Man Yew reserve side not wanting injuries. Wouldn't read too much into it.

That video is against Man Utd! If that's not playing against a team of hight standard then what is!

Man Yew reserve team, in a friendly. Hardly that competitive a match, eh?

Tell you what, let's examine his history.

Arsenal? Played a few Carling Cup games, released Aug 2006.
Leicester loan, 17 league matches in a 7 month spell.
Joined Derby permanently, Aug 06. Lasted a year, playing 15 league games, 10 as sub. Within 6 months of signing him, Derby loaned him out to Millwall. 6 league games there in 4 months. Millwall then paid 150k for him - only transfer fee he's gone for. Stayed with Millwall 18 months playing 17 league games, 8 as sub.

Millwall themselves loaned him out for the final 4 months of his stint with them. 5 League games at Southampton in that time. Millwall then released him on a free, Smith lasting the remainder of the season - 4 months - with Southampton, 8 league games, 5 as sub.

After that, Aug 2009, taken on by Palace. Lasted six months playing few games.

So basically, what we've got is a player at this level not good enough to cement a place with any type of regularity, who teams have got rid of very, very quickly.

Seriously - does anybody think Mackay would have his sights set so low?

His track record reminds me of Jay Bothroyd. He wasn't the most attractive signing, but that deal ended up a lot more positive than was previously expected.

I'd give Smith a chance.

Tue Jul 12, 2011 11:00 pm

john parkin

270 apperances without scoring... 9 different clubs.... only 8 goals scored since 2009 season.......

ok so smith got passed around abit at 18/19 years of age.... like many youngsters do and it can be unsettling...

derby had just signed 7 midfielders in 2006 and were pushing for promotion,
he impressed at millwall on loan however suffered a serious inj resulting in lack of performances... and then his form dipped as did millwalls...

im not trying to justify he is amazing, but certainly i dont think he looks that bad and he def has bags of pace and a good touch..

Bothroyd played far more games, more regularly and more consistently at a higher level.
