I always remember my old man telling me many, many years ago about local Cardiff gangs in the fifties. He was a Canton/Riverside lad and said some of them were vicious and constantly at odds with each other. Anyone heard anything similar?

I only know of the 70's and 80' with your gangs like the Docks Boys and Llanrumney Boys, both tough groups of lads.
My Father said to me the the Docks people in the 40' and 50's stuck together and kept in their own community , mostly dockers etc.

I do recall my dad mebtioning 'tear-ups' they used to have at places like the Victoria Ballroom and even City Supporters Club! When we moved to Pentrebane we one day passed a big bruiser of a guy in the street who winked at my dad. My dad nodded back and when I asked him who he was he said they were 'rivals' in two teenage gangs that frequented Canton in the fifties. Hated each others guts with a passion and frequently fighting with each other, twenty years on they were neighbours! Though never pals they did seem to have a great deal of respect for each other.

My mother who was born down the docks in the 20s as I was in the late 40s,( South William St ) She always said There was a lot of Italians, Maltese, Irish and Caribbean living down the docks .And when anyone was in the shit everyone rallied round to help. Everyone had nothing in them days. Now if you borrow £5000 you’re a businessman if you borrow a fiver you’re a bum. Let’s do our thing like the old docks people and stick together because we are right in the shit and we need to stick together

I knew of a few gangs in the 90s from Llanishen and Adamsdown but never really encountered them. Had a bit of grief with the Adamsdown boys due to football but nothing serious. Always heard rumours about the Llanishen lads but never saw it myself.

Years ago it was always kicking off with rumney/trowbridge fighting llanrumney, some mad times. Lot of trouble between Rumney high and st iltyds schools(however you spell it) in the early 80s, police were called in large numbers on more than one occasion.
Also remember a load of grangetown boys coming down to Rumney with baseball bats and clubbing a few boys.
