I feel sorry for todays hooligans. In my day, the 1970s, we got away with murder.
There was no CCTV, small town coppers were like dixon of dock green and we' just take over
for the day. Away at big city clubs you knew the police would be bastards but that was half the fun.
I can't condemn hooligans because I was one in my youth and they was feckin great days.

Lots of comments some are very predictable some reasonable. My take on it is this.... "innocent till proven guilty yes but looking at the footage it shows both sets of fans goading each other and then rushing each other and fights break out. There will be good and bad amongst both Chelsea and us. We've seen it all before and more importantly heard it all as well e.g. Leeds, Stoke, Birmingham, Swansea. If you put yourself in these positions then the law will throw the book at you and rightly so. I go to the game to have a laugh, a few beers and support the boys and am really passionate about the City. If you go to the games for the same or similar reasons then great but if you go deliberatley looking for trouble and smearing the name of the club then I have no sympathy for you. Someone mentioned earlier "in the 80s it was only the lads who were looking for trouble travelled - welll I have news for you my friend NOT ALL of us did. I went because of the love of my team. Again when on holiday someone asks who you support and you mention the City it isn't the "glad your part of the soul crew" sometimes it's with sadness that these people tar everyone with the same brush and think you might also be some kind of thug/neadnderthol.

I love this board with lots of freedom to express your views openly far more than MM board but there is a trend developing that some posters on here openly support the violence and are pleased to be even asociated with it. Please get real we have new owners and for once the future looks bright why not get rid of the need to cause mayhem. I went to Chelsea with my wife and boy to see my 10 year old scared was not pleasant. Imagine how you would have felt if it was your child.

I would agree with that Ceri.

I was certainly travelling in the bad old days and was only there for footballing reasons.

With regard to the incidents at Chelsea the arrests were presumably made on the basis of the CCTV evidence. OK, I agree innocent until etc that is pretty damaging evidence for the majority on both sides.

I would suggest, M'lud, that the only get out clause for those identified on that film is a technicality.

We as a club now need to move on.Regadless of your thoughts football has become a very different beast from 20 years ago and the only way forward is to attract investment. If we continue to be linked with such incidents then the chances of any additional funds appearing are reduced. We are not a Chelsea that can offset it's less savoury side with other factors. Us and probably 30 other middling clubs are chasing the same few potential investors. We need to give them reasons to look westwards not reasons to go elsewhere.

Rubbish. There's a photo in one of Annis' books of the total away support I believe at Scarborough or some such place midweek. There were 4 or 5 fans there and not a lad in sight. No doubt the majority of our away support at some games was largely the hooligan element but supporters club, Adar Glas etc also ran busses regularly so it wasn't, and has never been exclusively hoologans only at away games. Thats just an ill informed view.

When you say hang up your cloth I presume you are referring to labels like Stone Island? A gay italian label? If thats your gear you are welcome to carry on!

The people who are going to get busted are going to get busted because they were stupid enough to kick off outside the ground where they could be filmed instead of meeting up seomwhere else a bit more discreet.

Innocents could have easily (and some did) get caught up in it. That's not right is it?

Times have moved on.

I would agree we need to move on however it is evident that there are some that want to stay exactly where they are in the dark ages. As you say we are chasing investment and our "rep" would dissuade rather than compel people to join us. This then limits future signings etc. The CCTV is so so clear and these people will be dealt with once identified and rightly so I want to be able to go to the game, have a beer, support the boys win lose or draw without the fear of it "kicking off and violence just around the corner"

At last, a couple of others on here with sane, sensible views on this issue.

Seems like I wasn't the only one going away in the 70's and 80's just for the football as well.

Hallelujah!!

Football is a term that could be loosely associated in what we were watcing at those times :ayatollah:

God I can remember some truly awful games. But I went anyway and kept coming.

in the dark days of the mid 80's i don't think there were 2 many outbreaks of football. durban out durban out durban out. around that time when our away following was a couple of hundred a fair % were lads who were more than happy to get stuck in and its fair to say the more chance of trouble the bigger the away following :old: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:
