Historically Religion has caused a lot of grief over the years. The Jews and the Romans fought over it, we went on crusades over it, the Protestants and Catholics have been at each others throats for centuries, Arabs and Israelis are fighting over it and Al Qaeda are on there own crusade at the moment.
Over the centuries millions, possibly billions have died over religion. But whilst it is a major contributor to hatred, it is not THE contributor.
There are also lots of wars over things like money, power, race and resources. People fight over things like oil and water; gold and silver; or simply to rule over another country.
I am not a Marxist, but I think he had it spot on when he said ‘religion is the opiate of the masses’. It is a tool for subduing people, diverting them from the real injustices in the world and often prevents them from doing anything about it.
Anyone who is genuinely religious will be peaceful; using religion to go to war is just a pretext for greed and a desire for power and riches. Conquering another country in the name of which ever god you claim to be acting for is a handy cover for land grabbing and lining the pocket.
If you look at the UK, there is a lot of hatred about, but how much of that is religious? Most of it seems to be about other things; money, greed, politics, race, region, power, love. Hatred of the Tories, The Labour Party, socialists, fascists, rich people, poor people, bosses, Jacks, The English, egg-chasers, ex-wives, people with a different colour skin/sexuality/gender – are these based on religion? NO, but sometimes the hatred can be hidden behind a religion, such as the catholic (slightly ironic) hatred of homosexuality. The BNP and the EDL currently use Islamaphobia to hide the fact that they just hate people with a different colour skin.
It is in the interests of the powers to be that this situation continues. Whilst people are squabbling over religion, their attention is diverted from taking on those that rule over us. Religion keeps us subdued - hence ‘the opiate of the masses’.
Religion has been used as a pretext for hate for many centuries now, but usually as a cover for greed and power. The crusades were not about religion, they were about conquering other lands. Northern Ireland is not about religion, it is about control of our neighbours, Israel is not about Judaism, it is about America having a foothold in the Middle East – which just happens to be oil rich.
At a grass roots level there are undoubtedly some that cannot see they are puppets of the powerful and genuinely believe they are fighting for religion, but ultimately, no, religion is not the cause of most of the hatred in this world. Greed and power have that dubious honour.

Anyone that does not abide by UK law is dealt with by the authorities, no matter what their religion.

Of course, people invented religion to make themselves and their loved ones immortal and to gain a certain level of control over the populace.
