Why Cardiff MUST beat Rotherham

By Jamie Kemble

Wednesday 21st September 2016

Cardiff have made their worst start to a season in 12 years and have lost all of their last four matches, anything but a win against Rotherham will add even more concern to Paul Trollope’s tenure as Head Coach.

Like Cardiff, Rotherham have made a poor start to the season, winning just the one game at home to Brentford. The Millers are currently just one point above Cardiff and a Rotherham win would extend the gap between the two sides to four points.

Who knows, the result of this match might be significant further down the line if both Rotherham and Cardiff are still in and around the relegation places at the end of the season.

A fifth straight defeat or another game without a win would also increase the pressure on the team going into a home game against Derby next Tuesday. The spotlight would very much be on the future of Paul Trollope and the negative atmosphere would not help the players.

The Championship is a league of momentum – When teams are winning they tend to go on a long undefeated run and when teams are losing it’s hard to break the losing habit. If Rotherham claim all three points on Saturday, I really fear for Cardiff this season and the players’ confidence may be at an all time low.

A victory at the New York Stadium will be no given, Rotherham are undefeated at home in the League so far this season, winning one and drawing three by the scoreline of 2-2. Also Cardiff lost away to Rotherham last season and Cardiff’s away form has been far from good for the last few season, so a win will be no easy task.

Before the start of the season, Paul Trollope stated that the playoffs are the target this season. This target would look totally unrealistic with a defeat to Rotherham and the fans would, perhaps, be right to call for a new Head Coach.

This is an unfamiliar position for Cardiff to be in and expectations are high from the Cardiff fan-base. For Cardiff to be bottom of the league with the current squad Trollope has at his disposal would not be acceptable after nine games, and I feel a change would have to be made with a defeat at Rotherham…before it’s too late.

Team News

Stuart O’Keefe is back in training after a broken arm and is set to return within the next week, meanwhile new signing Joe Bennett remains out for up to two weeks with a calf injury. Cardiff will likely stick with Ben Amos between the sticks but Bruno Ecuele-Manga could be recalled to the defence.

Rotherham United Vs Cardiff City: Match Preview

Date and Time: Saturday 14th September (15.00)

Venue: ASSEAL New York Stadium

Referee: David Coote

Cardiff travel to the New York Stadium to face fellow strugglers Rotherham United in what could be Paul Trollope’s last chance to get the season up and running.

The Bluebirds travel to Yorkshire to face Rotherham United in a bid to finally get the season back on-track after winning one in eight games. Cardiff go into this one sitting rock bottom of the Sky Bet Championship, one point behind Saturday’s opponents, Rotherham.

There has been some suggestion that this fixture will be Paul Trollope’s last chance to save his job but reports are, of course, unconfirmed. The Bluebirds were beaten at home again last week, this time by rivals Leeds United live on Sky Sports, inevitably leading to unhappiness from supporters.

The Millers have also endured a poor start to the season with just six points from the first eight games. Alan Stubbs’ men haven’t won in four games and have a bizarre string of results at home, drawing three of their four home games 2-2.

Last time out, Rotherham were comfortably beaten at Ewood Park by Blackburn Rovers. The 4-2 scoreline further outlined the Millers’ defensive weaknesses. Their only win of the season to-date was a slender 1-0 win over Brentford who have enjoyed an impressive opening to the season.

Cardiff and Rotherham have shared the spoils in recent meetings with three draws in the last five and one win each. Rotherham had the upper-hand last season with a last-minute home win followed by a 2-2 draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.

David Coote is the man in charge of this one and Cardiff have sour memories of the Nottingham-based referee who awarded a penalty against the Bluebirds when the ball hit Matthew Connolly’s face against Birmingham City last season.

Rotherham United boss Alan Stubbs has given an update on the health of summer signing Dexter Blackstock, who is yet to feature for the Millers this season.

AS on Blackstock| "He's stepped up his training. Touch wood, he's had no adverse reaction. If that stays the case he'll be in the squad."

Why won't Tom Adeyemi feature on Saturday?

A clause in the midfielder's loan contract means he is ineligible to play for Rotherham versus his parent club, so Bluebirds' fans travelling to South Yorkshire won't see Adeyemi in action against Paul Trollope's men this weekend.

He is expected to be replaced in the starting XI by returning skipper Lee Frecklington, who will lock horns with Cardiff's midfield trio of Peter Whittingham, Aron Gunnarsson and Joe Ralls.

1-1 or 2-1 City, cant call it.

A Third loss would be disastrous and losing to these would be really concerning. Lose here and Tuesday and for me Trollope should go.

Lets hope we get the 3 points and make Derbys worries worse on Tuesday and the gaffer and squad turn things around

Some injury doubts for Cardiff City's game away to Rotherham tomorrow

Some bad news, but a boost for Stuart O’Keefe

A Few doubts - Kadeem Harris missed a couple days training (ankle ), Gunnarsson missed a bit with his calf. Gounongbe took a bad stud to his Achilles on the weekend, so got quite a few doubts, especially in attacking areas. That’s what the squad is for, if people are missing then opportunity knocks for others.

Joe Bennett is working hard to get back to full training, calf not settled down as quickly as we thought, he should be in squad training next week, but not expected to play till mid October.

Stuart O’Keefe - he’s been training fully for 10 day/2 weeks so he’s in contention.

Anthony Pilkington a major doubt for tomorrow

Cardiff have a host of injury concerns ahead of the game tomorrow and Cardiff manager Paiul Trollope will have to wait till tomorrow morning to assess a few City players.

Anthony Pilkington has missed a lot of the week, it’s a muscle issue in his thigh and he’s being assessed this morning, Fingers crossed with him, he could potentially play tomorrow. It’s a big fingers crossed, though, He’s a big player for us so missing him would be a blow, but it will give someone else a chance.

Ben Amos impressing

Paul Trollope:

"We’re pleased with him, he made a couple of decent saves against Leeds. He looked comfortable and assured, he kicked it well. He’s got that little bit of experience and we’re pleased to have him with us, he showed his level last week. We don’t put either of the Leeds goals down to him."

I would take that :ayatollah: :bluebird:

' A Scrappy Win Today '

Paul Trollope: Yeah we would take a scrappy win at Rotherham . It’s about winning, we haven’t got the win we thought we would, we could argue we deserved more. Couple of occasions where we got what we deserved, usually the results follow getting the process right.

There’s still a focus on performance and process but we’re also aware it’s both ends of the pitch, aggression and ruthlessness in the opposition penalty area ,if that not quite happening we have to keep the back door shut.

We’re aware the game is about winning, but things can change very quickly.

Results have dented us, that’s human nature, but there’s still a strong spirit and desire in staff and players that show that we’re strong enough to cope with this, turn it around an bounce back quickly

Rotherham are unbeaten at home 16/17.

Only 1 loss in 12 home league matches.

They have scored 1st in every home game 16/17.

Cardiff City have not won away since March.

And here is the problem. Noone has contributed nothing positive all season and was awful last week; yet Trollope continues to ignore a player who did more in 5 minutes last week to worry their defence that Noone did all game.

Unless he lines him up in the left today (unlikely) or Noone has his once a season blinder, you're laughing if you're a Rotherham player as if you've done any sort of homework then they're in for a straight forward afternoon.

Harris was carrying a knock I think. Good to see OKeefe back today. Fingers crossed for better but if we lose Trollope should be sacked before getting back on the bus. Last chance in my view.

I hope he has a stormer today but how can Trollope keep picking Ralls ?

Surely nobody can claim he's in on the back of his performances this season !!??

Teams are out here at the New York Stadium. Few walk-ups I think in the Bluebirds end as there is a probably a few hundred there now. Come on Cardiff. Do some goals.

Trollope shouting instructions

Trollope absolutely roars for his team to get up the field as Ben Amos gathers an aimless long ball. He wants them high up the pitch. Now he had a little go at the linesman for a foul not given. He’s bang up for this one!

Very little in terms of goalmouth action as we approach 10 minutes. #rufc with the majority of the ball so far.
