When I was a lad they were a massive club with a huge profile.Been in the doldrums for years until now but if they get back to where they were they'll have massive support.Still remember that little fecker Eric Gates taking the piss both on and off the pitch. We gave him all sorts of abuse but he silenced us with a hattrick.

Yep.. remember that, FA Cup 84. They were a large class above us. Their movement turned our players into shadows.

It’s quite simple really, are we a big club - No
Could we be a big club - Yes

Annis has said it numerous times, and arguably Sam did it for a little while, and that is, we are a sleeping giant (or rather a big club waiting to happen)

Yes we have been close to it over the last few years, but not quite over the line, ie, had we stayed in the premier league on either of our 2 recent times there, then I believe the giant would have woken up, the problem was the club was broken at the core when we achieved it, the main fan base was conflicted due to red gate the first time, and Tan didn’t want to invest any more under Warnock the second time.

If we were to gain promotion in the next 2-3 seasons under EB then i think the investment will come in (buy out maybe) to attract the players to keep us up, a good few seasons in the premier league will awaken the support that is in the surrounding areas and we could become a successful/big club, but even from now that is going take a promotion plus a few seasons in the so called promised land so its at least another 5 years minimum to achieve that.

Could we be a big club - I think so YES, but we aren’t there yet.

I think it comes down to how you define a big club. If we're talking Liverpool, United, Spurs, Arsenal etc then no we will never be a big club. We don't have the historic success, longevity at the highest level or sustained local support.

Neither will we ever be a "name" like Aston Villa, Wolves or Sheffield Wednesday for instance. Their history and past achievements run too deep for us to compete at that level.

However, there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to replicate what Crystal Palace has done and maintain regular Premier League status over a sustained period. Whether that would make us a big club is open to conjecture.

So what makes a big club? Attendances, fan base, history, spending power? I've always based it on attendances, we've always liked to think of City as a big club, but we're not, we are lower medium in my opinion. If you take places with similar populations to Cardiff then we are well behind. Boro', Ipswich, Norwich, Leicester, Stoke, Southampton and a few more have far better support than we get as a rule. We've had our moments of course but we are not as big as we think we are.

And as far as away support goes, I've stopped doing away games, there are some real tossers that follow city away and I don't need to be with them.

Unlike fans of certain other clubs, some of which you mentioned, Cardiff City's are not the be all and end all of their existence and like it or not that's the way it is. No amount of hand wringing by some on here will change that. We get excellent crowds when we do well and much less during our times of struggle. It has always been so.

I would still classify us as a medium size club, based on attendances, size of ground, potential, league status etc but no way would I ever deem us to be a big club, certain not at present nor in the foreseeable future.

We’ve had two awful seasons in the sunshine league in 60 years is it? I’d say we could be a big club but we’d need to stay up for 5-10 years to get close to being there…..interesting to see liverpoools crowds before they got going in the 70’s/80’s, nothing special. Build and they will come…unless of course it’s swansea.

Not true with all clubs:

Bradford City have not.

Plus Pompey have spent years and years in the lower leagues and their away support is three times ours.

I'll throw a spanner in this...

The truly 'big' clubs won't exist in 10 years. They'll be multi billion franchises playing under the names we recognise but in leagues, places and stadiums we don't.

The 'middle' clubs, or proper football clubs as I refer to them to my Franchise supporting friends, like us. Will be the true football to support in this country for 'proper' football fans.

We've seen this to small extent with attendances in NL and lower growing with people getting fed up of the nonsense that already comes with PL football.

Just throwing it out there... Who would you rather support a proper club or a franchise?!

It really does not worry me Cardiff will always be my club so really don’t give much thought to other teams However in other sports I do support franchise like Boston Celtic’s , New England Patriots for example. I did spend time in that part of the world and totally accepted They could move away from the area if they wanted too. They have support from all over the world as itvis the only way for many to see top level Basketball and other sports

Yes. But the point being... Would you want to see City go that way? As certainly teams like Manchesters, Liverpool, Newcastle will.

It won’t happen. Don’t see how it’s really relevant to this thread. As it has nothing to do with our short man syndrome.
