NOW OR NEVER???????

Tue Mar 23, 2010 2:29 pm

Very worrying feature on 5live last night. Premier League clubs are discussing a proposal to increase parachute payments to relegated clubs.

Currently, if you get relegated from the Prem, you get 2 payments of £11m in each of the 2 seasons following relegation. The new proposal is to increase those payments starting from next season to £16m for years 1 & 2 and then a further £8m for years 3 and 4 following relegation. Yes, folks that's £48m extra income for relegated clubs and if some form of wage capping linked to turnover is introduced, of course that extra money is included in your turnover.

We've already bankrupted our club in trying to compete with the likes of Newcaste and West Brom, what hope do we have of being competitive in the Championship if these new parachute proposals are approved?

By the way, there's no consultation with the Football League, Championship clubs or anyone else about this, it's just for the Premier League clubs to decide for themselves.

Can't they see that they're gonna kill the game like this? Newcastle and West Brom (for the umpteenth time) are going straight back up and that will happen year upon year.

Clubs like us, Swansea, Preston etc who've never benefitted from the cash injection of reaching the Prem will find it all but impossible to compete with the relegated clubs. Just as the top of the Prem has become an elite of 4/5 clubs, the same thing will happen in this division.

Can we make promotion this year? We better hope so.

Why are the powers that be, hell bent on killing the game?

There will never be another Clough who could take a division 3 team and win Division 1 within 5 years.

Never again, these f*cking wankers are killing the game.

The only game in the world where you get rewarded for being shite.

They should get f**k all, but if anything, they shouldn't be getting more and more.

This might sound like a strange reply to your post - but "OUR" players need to stand up and be counted now! It only emphasises how important it is for us to secure and hopefully take advantage of a playoff place this season!

Ok, we go up.

Spend maybe a few years there, improve squad with the necessary contracts.

Then get relegated.

Like it or not, money in the Prem is far more, hence player contracts are far more.

Without the additional income within the Prem, you then have a quad on high wages with vastly reduced income. Which then means you either have a firesale - gutting the team, making a further relegation a possibility - or you're left with a massive financial hole if you can't sell those players...

newcastle have been lucky

if they had a poor season then they would have struggled to keep things going

they have great support , but its still a drop of 10000 fans

and after a few years that becomes the main source of income

this is clearly another attempt to keep the big clubs big

if the premiership could, it would end relegation ..make no mistake ..but the courts would have a field day

they are all wankers, I would have loved bolton and that gartside to go down ..as he is at the core of some of the meddling

anotehr reason to join the trust is we are part of supporters direct that actively campaigns against all this shite

If we've learned anything of late, it's that you must live within your means.

The Premier League, doing what they do, is actively encouraging teams into debt with these payments.

There's too much corruption in the game, wnd now increasing payments is just benefitting the yoyo clubs like West Browm.

The clubs should be responsible enough to include relegation clauses in players contracts - if they go down, so do their wages! If they think they're good enough players to stay up it won't be a problem. If they have a problem then they are mercenaries and can f**k off!!

The club can insist on relegation clauses. The players don't have to sign them. Which can then mean you've a weakened squad in the Prem.

If companies insisted on similar clauses to lower workers wages should the company underperform, there would be post after post of righteous indignation!

I hear 'performance related pay' being mentioned a lot these days (wish the bankers were on it!!).
I don't see a problem with a base salary and bonuses dependant on performances/results.
Something does need to change in football but I'll be buggered if I know the answer!

Many , if not most , clubs already have a form of performance related pay. Strikers get bonuses for scoring goals , goalies and defenders for keeping clean sheets , and all in the matchday squad usually get appearance and win bonuses.

However , the problem is largely the overhigh level of base pay that players get even before they earn such bonuses. Its simply not sustainable for many clubs , which is why so many of them are facing potential financial ruin unless things change.

I can see a time in the not too distant future when the Blue Square Premier and Leagues 1 and 2 revert to being largely part time because their matchday income and share of TV money is just too low.

Setting a limit on slaries as a percentage of a club`s income is also not without problems as it may well lead to the rich clubs getting richer and more powerful and the poorer ones never having a hope of improving their status by promotion etc. e.g. if a cap of say 60% of income is enforced , then Man Utd`s 60% is one hell of a lot more than say Fulham`s so this artificial "cap" wouldn`t work if the aim is to make it a more competitive system with equal chances for all.
