kevin sainte-luce spared jail

A Cardiff City player must pay compensation to two girls he assaulted in a city centre night club.

Teenager Kevin Sainte-Luce has also been given a curfew after he knocked his one of his victims unconscious with a single blow while on the dance floor of Glam Nightclub on Greyfriars Road in Cardiff.

In a sentencing at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, Sainte-Luce, 19, was yesterday ordered to pay compensation totalling £1,250 following the incident, which happened in November.

He will give £1,000 to Anna Wadey who he knocked unconscious and £250 to Ms Wadey’s friend, Laura Bennett, who he shoved with clenched fists as he left the dance floor.

Sainte-Luce – dressed in a plain black suit with a striped tie – will pay the compensation in £100 weekly installments.

As well as the compensation, Sainte-Luce will undertake 12 months of unpaid community service work, with an unpaid work requirement of 180 hours, and has a 10-week curfew between Wednesday and Sunday, which will see him housebound at his home at Fairwater Grove East in Cardiff between 8pm and 6am.

District Judge Bodfan Jenkins said that because the unprovoked assaults were so drastically different to the behaviour Sainte-Luce exhibited in his work and home life there would be no time in custody.

Sentencing the 19-year-old, Judge Jenkins said: “In considering what sentence to impose upon you I’ve born in mind that the first of those two assaults was an unpremeditated act, though I will not accept that for the second.

“I also accept that you are of good character in the sense of no previous criminal convictions, that you’ve evidence of positive character and I bear in mind your youth.”

The judge added that because his promising career could be compromised by any prison time, he wanted to avoid taking such action but still felt the offences demanded serious punishment.

Geraint Richards, defending, added that the football player’s career may still be in jeopardy, and said: “There will be internal discipline carried out by the football club and the worst case scenario might be that they terminate his contract completely.”

Ms Wadey and Ms Bennett had been out celebrating a friend’s 18th birthday in the early hours of Saturday, November 3 when Sainte-Luce assaulted them.

The athlete originally fled from the scene but handed himself into police on November 10 and pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms Wadey.

But the footballer had vehemently denied assaulting Ms Bennett and claimed he acted in self-defence.

Judge Jenkins found him guilty of the second assault on January 9 and Sainte-Luce was told if he committed any further offences in the next 12 months he would be back in court and recharged for the two assault as well as the new offences.

Hope he gets kicked out of the club. Do not need that sort of behaviour when the club is trying to clean up its image and get in the Premier league.
Set an example to the rest regarding the consequences of their actions and the publics attitude towards them.

I certainly do not condone the actions of this young lad and certainly believe him to be extremely lucky that he did not receive a custodial sentence. That said there are other players, some still with us, who have had run ins with the law over the years.

I would like to think that we can turn something bad into something positive.

Good sentencing. A curfew is a good idea. He should be in resting after a days training and unwinding, not out on the town at his age. When he is older and more mature like Whittingham and Hudson then fair enough but his focus should be on trying to make it as a first team footballer currently. Hopefully the curfew helps with this. I do believe there is more to the story than meets the eye because when people are drunk they do all sorts of stupid things, regardless of gender. However, he has been sentenced and needs to move on from it. Do I hope he is kicked out of the club? No, because at the end of the day we have other players like Bellamy who have had run ins with the law. He should take this as his FIRST and FINAL warning and if there are any more incidents then he should be released immediately.

My view is he should be sacked. No time for those who hit women/kids

I do not condone this behaviour whatsoever however as the judge says and knowin what he's like from people in the club that work alongside him etc he apparently is a genuinely nice kid and this would of been so out of character so maybe workin alongside him an finding out what happened etc and how he can be helped would be better

I think maybe he was more implying he doesn't have time for people tht hit either women or kids as opposed to him being blamed for hitting kids...

He has to go.

But question is will he be gone from the club? I ent saying he should be given a chance just wondering what view the club would take.
