O/T Another one goes as Blockbusters bite the dust

Wed Jan 16, 2013 3:26 pm

The UK DVD rental store has gone into administration putting 4,190 jobs at risk, just a day after high street DVD and music store HMV suffered a similar fate.

Deloitte, who are also overseeing HMV, will now take over the day-to-day running of the firm. The accountancy film have said that Blockbuster could not keep up with competition from internet-based film rental services.

Blockbuster , which has 528 stores across the UK, confirmed it will continue to accept gift cards and credit acquired through a trade-in scheme offered in-stores.

Speaking for Deloitte, Lee Manning from the Restructuring Services practice said: “We are working closely with suppliers and employees to ensure the business has the best possible platform to secure a sale, preserve jobs and generate as much value as possible for all creditors.

“The core of the business is still profitable and we will continue to trade as normal in both retail and rental whilst we seek a buyer for all or parts of the business as a going concern.”

Blockbuster launched in the UK in 1989. It has closed more than 100 stores in recent years.

I don't see why anyone would need to go to a blockbusters store anymore.

I just can't be arsed with signing up to a internet based firm yet until its more widely available via the TV.

I prefer to go to a shop and look around, connect with the shop staff etc rather than sit on my arse like a lazy kunt in front of my computer downloading off some dodgy kunt internet site. The only thing I download on my computer is russian teen barely legal first time amateur porn...when the misses aint about that is.

Very sad to see Blockbusters close, I visited one on the weekend and it was like a ghost town, more staff than customers, so it didn't surprise me when it appeared on Sky news, I prefer popping into to Blockbusters rather than subscribe to the likes of Lovefilm etc. I find I don't get my money worth with these type of companies as I don't get the time to watch many films.
Not much of an alternative now, Sky charge the earth for on demand new releases, other option is to buy DVD's from Asda/Tesco's.

Sky and virgin offer films direct as soon as they are available on day of release.

They should make a film about Blockbusters going into administration. Shame they won't be able to sell it in store though.
