No promotion to the Premier League was ever sealed without a fight, so perhaps it’s a good job Bluebirds winger Craig Conway has taken up boxing.
Before anyone thinks a switch from the football field to the ring is on the cards however, Conway’s new hobby is purely a means of ensuring he is in peak condition for the crucial remaining months of Cardiff City’s season.
As revealed in December, the Scottish winger has started working with conditioning coach Darren Wilson, the man who ensures Wales’ world light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly is in tip-top shape.
And Conway says the work he is doing with Wilson has helped him produce the performances which have kept him in the team in recent weeks.
Conway was unhappy in the early months of this season when he wasn’t a regular in the starting line-up, but he has earned the backing of manager Malky Mackay by working hard and hitting form.
“Every player wants a fair crack of the whip and the gaffer (Mackay) has given me that,” said Conway, who was Mackay’s first signing after taking the City job.
“Now my aim is to play as many games as I can between now and the end of this season.
“We are in a situation where results come first. We want to play well, of course, but as long as we are winning people won’t care how we are playing.
“It’s impossible to play attractive football in every match. Teams will set up defensively against us at our stadium and we have to accept that and work to break them down.
“We are delighted with our results so far and our focus is on keeping that going, starting at Blackpool today.”
Conway’s ducking and diving in the boxing ring has the full approval of manager Malky Mackay, and the player describes the move as “the best he’s ever made.”
“Boxing has been the best thing I’ve ever done in terms of regaining fitness and staying trim,” explained Conway.
“Darren helps me add a couple of per cent with a total body workout.
“It keeps you fit and lean.
“I’ve come back from a couple of injuries over the last six months or so and it’s important to look after yourselves at those times.”
It’s especially important when your manager is one who demands such a heavy work-rate on the field.
But Conway isn’t complaining, and acknowledges that physical shape is key as the pressure ramps up for City.
“This is about every player giving it everything he has in every match and that’s what is happening,” he added.
“The manager is big on players working back and helping the defence out. I’m certainly up for that and so are all the lads.
“Personally, I feel fitter now than I’ve ever been. I’m feeling good and enjoying my football.
