Lappin not a sure signing

Thu Jan 24, 2013 11:04 am

Malky Mackay could face competition from Scotland as he seeks to land Simon Lappin as the final piece of his promotion jigsaw.

The Cardiff City boss has targeted the defender released this week by Norwich and hopes to tie up the deal on his return from warm weather training in Dubai. But reports north of the border say Scottish Premier League clubs are also interested in taking the former St Mirren star back home.

It means Mackay has a fight on his hands as he seeks to bolster his Premier League chasing squad even further by landing Lappin as defensive cover for the full-back berths.

Mackay has already secured striker Fraizer Campbell on a £650,000 move from Sunderland in this January window and emphasises none of his top stars will be sold.

The only departures would be Stephen McPhail on a short-term loan because he needs first team football and Robert Earnshaw, who Mackay doesn’t want.

The City boss strongly dismissed rumours linking Kevin McNaughton with a move to Derby, stating: “That has never been even a possibility – Kevin is a key player in our squad.”

Instead of letting the full-back stalwart leave, Mackay wants to bring in Lappin to provide even more competition and challenge McNaughton, Andrew Taylor and Matt Connolly for their places.

Lappin left Norwich after six years by mutual consent after failing to hold down a place in Chris Hughton’s team.

“We have come a fair way as a group this season and everybody is in this together,” said Mackay.

“There is still a challenge ahead and we will face that as this group.”

I agree pal, plenty of younger, better talent out there for Malky to bring in.

as i said in an earlier thread the emergence of ben nugent has eased malkys worries and why sign lappin when norwich dont consider him good enough for the premier league.

Experianced full back
on a free
lowish wages
Allows malkey to keep funds for the summer
know the players
knows our style of play and whats expected
wont need time to settle
A six month deal would be perfect
No brainer for me !!!
Even though i dont rate him that highly he was impressive last time he played for us and is easily good enough for the championship especially as back up .

Exactly, rather a hungry younger player that would fight for a place in the squad.

thomas

i understand what your saying but there is no way he would sign for only 6 months when other clubs would give him longer contracts.
stick to ben nugent and set our sights higher in the summer

That would be the only way I'd sign him is on a 6 month contract, as stated he isnt good enough for Norwich in the premiership, so we wouldn't need him when we get there ;) . I do think that a younger full back is needed along with ben nugent coming through.

Yeah i agree i wouldnt give him a longer contract either but if they can get him temporary before he goes to scotland i would have him then look for quality in the summer .
Ben nugent is a c/b though cant see him as a full back , Declan john maybe he looks promising and one for the future

nugent/ralls/john/gunnarsson have all covered this season and can fill the gap until summer.

We dont know whats happening in the transfer market though do we?
Perhaps Malky has been trying to sign younger players with the future
in mind and been knocked back? So given that Lappin didnt do badly
at all last time out I think he may well be suitable as cheaper cover?

Leaves a few more million free for the summer? Who knows? I dont think
our defence is a problem right now.
