A good weekend for football?

Sun Jan 27, 2013 10:56 pm

I watched a few games this weekend which is unusual for me as I'm Cardiff end of, anything else is irrelevant. Not living in the UK means I see live games that are not on UK TV most of the time, Cardiff games take some minor research to find a dodgy internet feed but that has become much easier as we are now 10 points clear.

This weekend I've had three FA Cup matches live on three channels on "normal" TV channels so watched a lot of football, unless the handball world cup was on when Danish swoped over. The FA Cup this year has shown to the world that it is the greatest cup competition in the world.

The next Danish, Swedish, nordic fool that says I must be so proud of swansea as I'm Welsh, get's it the back of the head.

What's Danish football like? I've been to Denmark (nice country, sea smells disgusting) but never seen the football.

Very much like the SPL and the other Scottish leagues BB, I think they have more or less the same populations but haven't checked. FC Copenhagen rule in a much the same way as Celtic now rule the SPL, I think they are 12 points clear after 20 games in a 12 team league. Incidentally folk think we've had it bad with the rebrand, FC Copenhagen were formed in the early 1990's by the merger of two Copenhagen teams, one was called Copenhagen something, I don't know the other one!!

Anyway since then FC have won the league just about every year, Brøndby are the local rivals, just up the road from me, but they are shit this year, I think they may even be bottom of the supa league. The rest of the teams fight for second place and entry into the European games. I've only seen two games since I'v been here one was a cup match that I attended last year as I saw the flood lights from my office and I was living near there trotted along. Football was awful but the admission, about 4 quid, included a beer which was served from a bar in the corner of the pitch. I stayed there for the duration and was surprised to see some of the players supping ale towards the end of the game!!

The second was my local team Fredericia or something like that. That was on a par with Welsh League so imagine my surprise when I discovered they are actually in the Danish 1st Division, their equivalent of the Championship, although in fairness I think they are part time semi-pro.

The TV mostly shows the Premier Games (and us on the odd occasion) and other European league matches. On Saturday/Sunday they showed six live FA Cup ties, three each day, no mention of the Danish Supa League at all!

I'm off to Turkey on Wednesday again and am hoping to see Antalya (Antalyaspor or something) playing one of the Ankara teams, not sure of the dat think it may clash with the Leeds game. Last time I checked Antalya were second or third in the Turkish Premier League so could be interesting.

You haven't missed much BB, in fact I go so far as to say you didn't miss anything at all!!

As for the sea, they've cleaned that up in Copenhagen and are very proud of the fact you can now swim in any of the canals, harbors without catching a serious disease or even dying

Oh the other thing about Danish football is that the teams have very odd names, I was looking to see where Aarhus were but couldn't find them anywhere, asked a colleague who told me they are called AGF! OB is Odense, AaD is Aalborg, etc all very confusing.

I've just checked and my local team is not THE Fredericia they are located in Jutland, I thought the standard was a bit shit for a professional league, suppose I'd better lean some Danish one of these days

I was surprised to be honest given Denmark's pedigree in European football. I was out Friday night and most Danes were engrossed in the Handball world Cup (could be why I compared them to Scotland  ) which is a very strange game. Apart from the usual, "you're Welsh you must love what Swansea are doing, Mikel Laudraup, etc, etc" nah f**k off I'm Cardiff you outstandingly beautiful young lady, do you shave yer havn...

The Danes don't even talk about football that much and I have several colleagues who support their local clubs but would never know unless I ask. That all changed when that herring eating viking chap moved into the caravan park near Port Talbot now it's a couple of times a day, going to knock up a little "Cardiff NOT Swansea" flag for my desk one of these days
