Is this really the end of the dealings or do you expect anymore?
Simon Lappin signing close for Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay
Robert Earnshaw & Steven McPhail
Jan 28 2013
Cardiff City are expecting to complete the signing of versatile Simon Lappin within the next couple of days.
The 30-year-old was released by Norwich City recently and is poised to ink an 18-month contract to bring him back to the Welsh capital.
Glaswegian Lappin was on loan in South Wales at the end of last year and made two appearances for the Bluebirds.
Following the capture of Lappin, who is seen as cover for Bluebirds' left-back Andrew Taylor, Mackay is expecting to make no more additions to his squad as they return to Championship action at Leeds on Saturday.
Meanwhile enquiries have been made by a clutch of clubs about the availability of midfielder Stephen McPhail and striker Robert Earnshaw.
Midfielder McPhail has been told he can go out on short-term loan as he looks to get back to full fitness and Earnshaw has been told he can leave the club.
The transfer window closes on Thursday with both players' futures currently still unclear.

I reckon he may go back for Brayford on deadline day....try and force Derby's hand. Other than that i think we are done.

I have a feeling that he may go for one more, Brayford could very well be the one, he can also play in midfield so would be excellant cover for a number of positions.

cant see anymore being done apart from this! but we dont really need anyone one else imo..

Why an 18 month contract? Seems a bit weird, would have thought would be better just to sign him until the end of the season?? can't see him being Premier league quality...
Mon Jan 28, 2013 5:49 pm
Would only have given him a contract until the end of the season If he did not want that then so be it

Lappin should be signed on til end of season then reviewed for maybe a further year option.
Mcphail will probably end up at Wednesday and i hope he does well there and Jonesey offers him a proper contract as he has no future here IMO.

Id rather us bring through Declan John as cover for Taylor. Really cant see the point of Lappin. Hes a midfielder for Norwich and can play at fullback. We got players allready here capable enough.
In Malky we trust tho so lets hope he proves doubters wrong. Another Scottish lad getting looked after by Malky ?

Anothet scottish lad?
Out of 23 malky signings the only scottish ones he made were Cowie, Conway and Miller and he sold one of them!
Does my nut when people say he favours scots.

It is a bit silly, and he did also let Paul Quinn go!
Lappin is a decent signing. His versatility to cover 3 or 4 positions could be invaluable. He enever really had enough playing time to show what he can give but as soon as someone makes a mistake who isn't a favourite they get pounced upon.
At least give the lad a chance to get fully match fit before judging him.

I would have thought its not all one way traffic and Lappin would have a say and want a bit more security. As a free agent he may well have gone elsewhere, for less money, but a few years.
As we need cover it was probably worth the, still short, 18 month contract.
Mon Jan 28, 2013 6:59 pm
Sign him til the end of the season and what do you get? A Player who knows he's only
here as cover. Give him 18 months and he's more likely to fight for his place and feel
part of the group. Thats my take on it.

Underwhelmed by this.

I simply do not understand why people are not a little frustrated that Malky did not go out again a "big time" defender after all of the build up to the January window. Loads of posters were calling for three new impact players but the Campbell signing pretty much silenced everyone. Just asking.

We have a couple of youngsters on the verge of breaking through like Nugent and John.

When i say another Scottish lad, i mean by the healthy contingent allready in the squad. I know Malky didnt sign them all. But Marshall, Kev Mac, Don Cowie, Craig Conway, and now possibly Lappin (not including Miller who he signed). If all 5 start then nearly half the side is Scottish !

Cardiff City have always had a good steady flow of Scottish players over the decades.
One of my most favorites was John Buchanan. Bill Shankly even played for City as a "guest" during the SWW years.

Cardiff City sign Connah's Quay Nomads striker Rhys Healey
Cardiff City have signed teenage striker Rhys Healey from Welsh Premiership side Gap Connah's Quay.
The 18-year-old joins the Championship leaders on a two-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Healey has scored sixteen goals for the Nomads during this campaign and has signed with the Bluebirds until the summer of 2015.
"We think Rhys is one with huge potential." said Malky Mackay, the Cardiff City Manager.
"We brought Rhys in after having looked at the division to see what the best young talent is there - and we think Rhys is one with huge potential. "
"He'll be training with our Development Squad and Under 18s to start with. We'll try and bleed him in gently towards the senior setup and see how he develops, but he's certainly one with great potential for the future."
A Nomads statement wished Healey well and praised Cardiff for the "brilliant way they have worked with us, generous, patient and always courteous".

Why people keep bringing up "use Declan for cover" is beyond me. If Taylor suffers a season ending injury lets say, against Leeds...would you be comfortable with inexperienced player against the likes of Leicester? Also the pressure they will be under to close out the rest of the season to win promotion? That's why you need somebody with Lappin's experience.

Maybe we see John in the academy games and think hes a very good up and coming talent. Most fans would love to see 1 of our own come through.
We also got other players who can play left back. Macnaughton, Connolly can both play there. Gunnarson is easily converted to right back incase of emergency aswell. As you say the word "inexperianced" so do you actually know how much experiance Lappin has as a left back as hes predominantly a left midfield player ?

My mate who is a Norwich season ticket holder tells me he puts in a shift when he rarely plays but lacks the quality needed for the prem. Definitely a midfielder who covers left back.

Anyone who cannot understand why the guy wouldnt want to sign a 6 month deal doesnt really understand football. At his age, and an established championship player, he will get other offers for longer than that. Just cos us fans think 6 months is enough he plays football to earn money for himself and his family, not our needs.
However, I dont think the guy is what we need at the next level. A championship midfielder who can cover left back. A tad underwhelming to say the least.

I thought he looked ok with us considering he hadn't played much football. Although let's be honest he won't be on a great deal of money, there is no transfer fee and he will provide decent cover in a number of positions rather than a starter. A Norwich friend of mine says he was surprised he was released as he would work hard and run through a brick wall if needed. A 'wait-and-see' signing.
I have to agree with you on this. To me the Lappin signing makes perfect sense when considering the cost effectiveness of an 18 month contract against a big transfer fee for someone else.

He does look a young talent, which i'm happy about but development games are far from games against Leicester, Hull and even those tough games a against the teams battling to stay up. Gunnarson is in fine form so why waste him at RB? Lappin has played LB before and does a good enough job. This is just a signing to ensure we have the experienced cover so we don't go downhill and fail promotion if something were to go wrong.
Tue Jan 29, 2013 2:11 pm
We also need to remember young John has only just recently converted from a winger to a full back so is still learning that position. Development games are the place to do that, not the promotion run-in.
Tue Jan 29, 2013 3:17 pm
Now is defiantly not the time to be bringing inexperianced players into the teams. It's probably the most important final run of games in our clubs history.
The experienced players will be feeling pressure never mind the youngsters.
Say they make a mistake in a game an it costs us promotion.
